In order to improve the quality and efficiency of video coding and decoding, it is of great significance to select a suitable loop filter scheme. In this paper, an adaptive scheme based on content is promoted, with several elements taken into consideration, which includes the correlation between two macroblocks, the average value of motion vector in macroblock, the different level of QP value and the difference between two pixels values. All of these elements are colligated based on the statistical result of the video test and taken as the judgment criterion for strength of loop filter. The experimental results indicate that this method is good for improving the efficiency of video coding.

In this paper, a multilevel cross-layer feedback based adaptive video coding scheme is proposed to enhance the robustness of the wireless video transmission. Two level cross-layer feedbacks are developed in this work to achieve timely and accurate channel-aware: one is the feedback from physical (PHY) to applying (APP) layer, named PHY-APP feedback, which is used to get the available bandwidth of the physical channel using the feedback mechanism of adaptive modulation and coding (AMC);The second one is the feedback from data link (DL) layer to APP layer: an agent is deployed at the DL layer to predict the possible frame losses by analyzing the DL layer's automatic repeat request (ARQ), and then the frame losses information is sent to APP layer for proper reference picture selection (RPS). By exploiting the two-level feedback, the methods of rate control and RPS are combined to achieve channel-adaptive video coding. Experimental results show that: compared to the existed scheme without the multilevel feedback, the proposed method can get a significant improvement in Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) for the wireless video transmission.

This paper presents a new framework for wireless video streaming services using the resource-constrained embedded camera sensors based on block compressive sensing. We propose adaptive encoding scheme that exploits high redundancy between successive video frames to reduce transmission cost while effectively handling occlusion effects and, at the same time, maintains the simple and energy conserving encoder design. The proposed methodology adapts the compression ratio for different blocks of the non-key frame depending on temporal correlation. We also propose compressed domain motion and measurements estimation techniques to exploit the high correlation between successive frames at the decoder. The proposed motion estimation technique makes use of restricted isometry property of the sensing matrix to seek the best matching measurement vector for motion estimation as opposed to block matching in conventional video coding. In the proposed measurement estimation technique, efficient utilization of bandwidth is achieved by skipping some measurements at the transmitter side. The skipped measurements are estimated at the receiver by exploiting the correlation between CS measurements of the non-key frame and corresponding motion predicted frame using multiple regression model. Extensive simulation results on a set of diverse video sequences are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed video coding technique.

KTL transform can be used to calculate the basis vectors of a set of frames obtained from a training video sequence, where the basis vectors characterize the eigenspace that can be used as a codebook for the coding of a similar video sequence. In this paper, a novel method has been developed which adaptively updates the eigenspace as each frame of the video sequence is processed and encoded. Two alternative approaches have been introduced, where the first approach uses single eigenspace and the second approach uses multiple eigenspaces. The visual and quantitative performance of the proposed multiple eigenspaces method has been the best among the proposed adaptive and the other nonadaptive methods.

This paper presents FastInter360, a fast inter mode decision algorithm for accelerating the encoding of ERP 360 videos. The development of FastInter360 involves an in-depth and comprehensive set of evaluations performed to understand the differences in the encoder's behavior when encoding 360 and conventional videos. These evaluations showed that due to the texture distortions resulting from projection, the encoder presents a specific behavior when encoding 360 videos, making it more likely to use a recurrent set of encoding modes when processing 360 videos. Besides, the coding efficiency is less sensible to approximations in some encoding steps depending on the frame region. FastInter360 is then proposed to reduce the encoding complexity by exploiting these differences. FastInter360 comprises three algorithms that accelerate the encoding by performing early decision by SKIP mode, reducing integer motion estimation search range, and adjusting fractional motion estimation precision. Furthermore, each of these algorithms behaves according to distortion intensity, performing greater complexity reduction in more distorted regions. When employed altogether, these algorithms compose FastInter360, which is able to achieve an average complexity reduction of 22.84% with a coding efficiency loss of 0.652% BD-BR, on average, making FastInter360 competitive with literature works.

In video streaming on the internet, effective encoding recipes (i.e. bitrate-resolution pairs) are a main obstacle to deliver high-quality video streams. We developed a method to generate an encoding recipe that considers subjective visual quality with one just-noticeable difference (JND) distance. However, this method requires excessive computation time, which is not directly applicable for live streaming. In this paper, in order to provide a light-weight method for live streaming, we developed three acceleration techniques: resolution extrapolation, VMAF skipping and sampled objective measure calculation. These techniques are heuristic, but greatly contribute to reducing computational cost. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a significant reduction in computation time without significant effects on rate-JND characteristics.

Congestion Control for Cloud Gaming Over UDP Based on Round-Trip video Latency

We describe a network congestion control mechanism for cloud gaming (CG) platforms based on the user datagram protocol (UDP). To minimize the contribution of the downstream transmission delay to the total end-to-end latency in the interaction-perception loop, we first define the round-trip video latency (RTVL) and develop a congestion model. Based on them, we design and implement an adaptation strategy that detects the early stages of congestion to prevent high values of RTVL and network bufferbloat, thus avoiding packet losses. Using data measured from the network, our strategy modifies the target output bitrate of the video encoder to throttle down or upto the data flow sent by the server to the client. In the presence of sudden downstream channel capacity drops of over 40%, our algorithm reactively manages to satisfy the key CG requirements for interactive games by entirely avoiding the packet losses and keeping the RTVL below 100 ms. In reasonably stable network conditions, our algorithm proactively keeps exploring for higher bitrates and building a "network state dictionary," due to which it achieves an effective downstream channel capacity use of similar to 95%.

Classical approaches of video scalability may produce some problems for medium or high cell loss ratio and when traffic load on the transmission network is rapidly varying. In this paper, the standard MPEG-2 video codec is modified to manage packet losses during the transmission over an ATM network. A layered coding scheme is adopted, which uses an adaptive data-partition method (ADP) to generate two compressed video layers to be transmitted with different priority. The MPEG-P slice structure of the upper layer is completely redefined and a new synchronization procedure between the two layers is introduced. The experimental results prove the superiority of the two-layer model with respect to the standard approach, particularly for increasing values of cell loss probability.

In this paper, we propose the macroblock-level adaptive dynamic resolution conversion (DRC) technique usable by an encoder to decide whether to reduce the resolution of input image on block-by-block basis for better compression efficiency. By reducing the spatial resolution of a block, the proposed scheme provides additional compression. As a proper resolution of a block is selected adaptively in the rate-distortion optimized way,, more flexible coding is supported adapting to the feature of image. Simulation based on the state of the art codec H.264 standard demonstrates that the proposed scheme has better performance than H.264 in terms of rate-distortion.

The efficient motion estimation algorithms are the important research hotspot in the real-time video coding-decoding technology. This paper proposes a novel and simple fast motion estimation algorithm based on adaptive search-pattern. The new algorithm includes three schemes: stationary block prediction, predictive search for non-stationary blocks, choosing a starting point and adaptive refinement search in merging process. Experiments show that the efficient motion estimation algorithm proposed can further reduce the computations of block-matching while improve the compression effect.
