Spatial behavior is a principal aspect for architects to consider. Unfortunately, it is sometimes hard to predict, as users of space seldom follow a standard routine. However, predicting user behavior in a space can potentially illuminate the entire design process. Moreover, it is a key factor in fighting the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Until most of the public gets their vaccine, health officials recommend social distancing as the primary means of fighting the pandemic. This paper uses an agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) approach to reproduce, analyze, and predict spatial behavior during the pandemic in a school environment and its impact on disease propagation. The simulation reproduces the behavior of teachers and students at a sample elementary school. By manipulating parameters that simulate the school officials' response to the pandemic, stakeholders can assess the most effective preventive measures. As a result of running multiple scenarios, the study demonstrates how varying starting conditions and alternate spatial behaviors could lead to different results, providing insight to stakeholders on how to handle disease spread in school environments.

Assessing the introduction of regional driverless demand-responsive transit services through agent-based modeling and simulation

Demand-responsive transit systems are seen as a solution to improve the level of service and decrease the costs of providing transit to rural or low-demand areas. There are great expectations on the impact that driverless demand-responsive transit (DDRT) systems can have on a regional setting. Nevertheless, the application of DDRT in such type of setting has not been widely studied, in particular for scenarios where the system is an addition to the existing alternatives (as characteristic of the early diffusion stage of an innovation). This study provides an assessment of the early-stage operation of a regional DDRT system used by a small portion of the entire potential adopters. A methodological approach is built upon an agent-based model through which the daily operation of a DDRT system is simulated in detail. This approach is applied to a case study in Portugal considering scenarios varying in terms of several operational parameters, adoption rates (from 1 to 20%), and types of services (private versus shared rides). Results show that each vehicle in the DDRT system with shared rides could replace up to 13 private vehicles with a decrease in the vehicle-kilometers traveled of 1%. The DDRT system operation is profitable even with low adoption rates (starting from 2% for the system with shared rides). When considering the adoption rate of 5%, the system with shared rides is 54% more profitable than the one with private rides, but, from the perspective of travelers, shared rides lead to longer waiting times and detours.

Applications of agent-based modeling and simulation in organization management: a quarter-century review through bibliometric mapping (1998-2022)

The purpose of this study is to review existing research on organization management that applied agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS). First, we systematically identified 133 relevant articles published between 1998 and 2022 using the Web of Science (WoS) and EBSCOhost database. Second, we analyzed the characteristics of ABMS reported in the 133 articles. The results illustrated that the focal articles made extensive use of ABMS as a means of theory development and the enhancement of transparency was demanded. Third, we used a bibliometric mapping approach to analyze the 133 articles visually. The results identified 36 key terms and four clusters: team behaviors under complex environments, organizational structure and design, knowledge management in organizations, and organizational decision-making. The analysis also showed which key terms are used as research fronts and which terms are emerging. Lastly, we suggest five promising research opportunities that should either be continued or be addressed in organization management.

modeling and simulation of telecommunication networks have captivated significant interdisciplinary attention, notably since the release of the fifth-generation (5G) technology and the heavy public interest associated with its Non-Standalone (NSA) and eventual Standalone (SA) architecture deployment. However, 5G and beyond (5G+) network simulation is rather challenging as the complexity of networks has massively multiplied, given the manifold network intricacies demanded by stringent 5G requirements like mobile mmWave, Massive Multiple Input Multiple-Output (MIMO), Advanced Channel Coding, and more. Furthermore, the arrival of 5G marks a turning point in the evolution of mobile networks as it progresses towards the softwarization of networks and paves the path for future Artificial Intelligence (AI) native 6G and beyond networks. Consequently, classical simulation techniques have a high risk of becoming insufficient to model the demands of such drastically changing network dynamics, prompting researchers to view 5G+ networks from the perspective of Complex System Science (CSS). We move in that direction as we shed light on agent-based modeling and simulation as a pragmatic and powerful tool to model 5G+ communication networks. Our approach involves a comprehensive survey of agent-based simulation (ABS) and 5G+ networks, utilizing its insights to dissect the advantages, potential, and challenges of ABS in the context of 5G+ networks. Through proposing a prospective architecture for a simulator and its envisioned evolution into a Digital Twin (DT), we not only offer insights into the lessons learned but also chart out future research pathways in the flourishing domain of 5G+ modeling and simulation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study in the literature that tackles the complexities of modeling and simulating 5G+ networks, by adopting an ABS approach.

The Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) paradigm promotes ubiquitous systems that are intended to facilitate different activities for the end user (resident of that environment). This is even more impactful for elderly citizens or people with mobility issues, who tend to face more challenges to perform tasks than someone with no movement problems, as it allows them to age in their own personal space with technological aid. Evaluating the Quality in Use (QinU) of these applications is, therefore, highly necessary. Doing that in a classical way requires involving potential users actively testing the applications in place, which can be difficult for those with some sort of motor impairment. To answer this problem, we propose to evaluate the QinU through simulations using software agents to replace the user's explicit and implicit interactions with a software application in a simulated AAL. These simulations generate the necessary synthetic data to make a QinU evaluation possible by applying quality measures, therefore providing supporting data for a quality analyst to play their role. A proof of concept is presented as the feasibility study of this proposal.

Humans have witnessed several tsunamis throughout their history with tremendous human, environmental and material damage. Vietnam, because of its special geographic location in Southeast Asia, might be affected by tsunamis. Although the risk of tsunami in Vietnam is low, it does exist. Therefore, people must be well prepared if a tsunami strikes. Minimizing the damage caused by a tsunami, both for humans and infrastructure, is the most important duty of the authorities and the scientists. The objective of our research is to evaluate and measure the tsunami impacts on citizens and tourists according to their awareness of the situation and moving strategies towards shelters. We follow the agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) approach and illustrate it through a case study applied to Da Nang city, Vietnam, using the NetLogo platform and geo-spatial information.

This paper presents a new multi-agent model for simulating malware propagation in device-to-device (D2D) 5G networks. This model allows to understand and analyze mobile malware spreading dynamics in such highly dynamical networks. Additionally, we present a theoretical study to validate and benchmark our proposed approach for some basic scenarios that are less complicated to model mathematically and also to highlight the key parameters of the model. Our simulations identify critical thresholds for "no propagation" and for "maximum malware propagation" and make predictions on the malware spread velocity as well as device infection rates. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first study applying agent-based simulations for malware propagation in D2D.

agent-based modeling and simulation is a powerful technique which allows to study the interactions in complex systems, and allows to explore or even foresee the emergence of more complicated properties or behaviors related to the interaction among the simpler agents in the environment. In the context of emergency or crisis scenarios, agent-based modeling and simulation can allow to effectively study emergency plans, with the goal of assessing their viability, also with respect to the number of possible fatalities. In this paper, we analyze agent-based modeling and simulation for crisis scenarios from a methodological and empirical point of view, with the goal of identifying what are the behavioral parameters that a model should encompass, in order for the results of the simulation to be useful for emergency plan assessment and/or compilation. We also experimentally provide a characterization of the effects of such behavioral parameters.

Dominant technology formation is the key for the hightech industry to“cross the chasm”and gain an established foothold in the market(and hence disrupt the regime).Therefore,a stimulus-response model is proposed to investigate the dominant technology by exploring its formation process and ***,based on complex adaptive system theory and the basic stimulus-response model,we use a combination of agent-based modeling and system dynamics modeling to capture the interactions between dominant technology and the socio-technical *** results indicate the following:(i)The dynamic interaction is“stimulus-reaction-selection”,which promotes the dominant technology’s formation.(ii)The dominant technology’s formation can be described as a dynamic process in which the adaptation intensity of technology standards increases continuously until it becomes the leading technology under the dual action of internal and external mechanisms.(iii)The dominant technology’s formation in the high-tech industry is influenced by learning ability,the number of adopting users and ***,a“critical scale”of learning ability exists to promote the formation of leading technology:a large number of adopting users can promote the dominant technology’s formation by influencing the adaptive response of technology standards to the socio-technical landscape and the choice of technology standards by the socio-technical *** is a minimum threshold and a maximum threshold for the role of adaptability in the dominant technology’s formation.(iv)The socio-technical landscape can promote the leading technology’s shaping in the high-tech industry,and different elements have different *** study promotes research on the formation mechanism of dominant technology in the high-tech industry,presents new perspectives and methods for researchers,and provides essential enlightenment for managers to formulate technology strategies.
