This paper presents ABStractme, a tool for modeling the simulated environment in agent-based simulations. Differently from existing alternatives, ABStractme allows specification of the environment in terms of concerns, which improve modularization. Moreover, it supports the modeling of setup aspects of the simulation, in addition to entities and the spatial abstraction. The tool generates ready-to-use code for the NetLogo simulation platform. agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) has arisen as new approach to effectively support domain experts to cope with the growing complexity of the problems which they have to face and solve. To date, few methodologies are available which can be exploited by domain experts with limited programming expertise to model and subsequently analyze complex systems typical of their application domains. In this paper the easyABMS methodology is proposed to overcome the lack of integrated methodologies able to seamlessly guide domain experts from the analysis of the system under consideration to its modeling and analysis of simulation results. The effectiveness of easyABMS is also experimented through a case study in the logistics domain which concerns the analysis of different policies for managing vehicles used for stacking and moving containers in a transhipment terminal. Multilevel Probabilistic Morphological Analysis for Facilitating modeling and simulation of Notional Scenarios

Despite advances in computational power, simulation-based experiments of complex problems remain time-consuming. Significant efforts are required to define an accurate representation of the problem and draw relevant conclusions about relationships between input parameters and output performance measures. To reduce the computational burden without sacrificing accuracy, it is customary to design a set of relevant scenarios. Doing so necessitates that the problem be decomposed into relevant parameters and that the consistency of these parameters be analyzed. To address this challenge, we propose a multilevel probabilistic morphological analysis. Traditionally, morphological analysis documents the decomposition of a system into its main components, and performs binary compatibility assessments to document relational data between component options. However, this approach leads to a rigid definition of the problem space and a static solution space that does not account for uncertain and dynamic behaviors associated with complex systems-of-systems. This research incorporates two important improvements. First, it explicitly incorporates a multilevel approach accommodating any successive decomposition steps that may be required when dealing with a complex system-of-systems problem. Second, this research introduces probabilistic cross-consistency assessments instead of traditional binary assessments to account for uncertain future states of the world. This probabilistic scheme is used to describe degrees of likelihood that two elements may coexist in a given scenario. This way, more complex interactions may also be captured and more realistic scenarios may be defined. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a problem investigating the design of architectures of detection systems for the protection of homeland critical assets.

An agent-based modeling optimization approach for understanding behavior of engineered complex adaptive systems

The objective of this study is to present a formal agent-based modeling (ABM) platform that enables managers to predict and partially control patterns of behaviors in certain engineered complex adaptive systems (ECASs). The approach integrates social networks, social science, complex systems, and diffusion theory into a consumer-based optimization and agent-based modeling (ABM) platform. Demonstrated on the U.S. electricity markets, ABM is integrated with normative and subjective decision behavior recommended by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Furthermore, the modeling and solution methodology address shortcomings in previous ABM and Transactive Energy (TE) approaches and advances our ability to model and understand ECAS behaviors through computational intelligence. The mathematical approach is a non-convex consumer based optimization model that is integrated with an ABM in a game environment. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

According to the INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard, in 2016, an average driver in Los Angeles has spent 100 hours (approximately 4 days) in traffic jams. The economic impact of this is huge. Besides, also issues related to environment is non-negligible. Many naive solutions tend to ignore the fundamental rule of traffic: building new roads just makes people drive more, i.e., more supply creates more demand. Given the continuous growth of the world urban population and the increasing needs related to mobility of people and goods, the demand is likely to grown anyway. Lucky, there are not only bad news here: people do adapt to congestion. Therefore, it is important to understand how this adaptive process occurs, and how to seize the opportunity to develop or enhance agent-based tools as well as reinforcement learning methods in order to contribute to the effort of fixing traffic as much as possible. Among many others, one example here is the design of protocols and mechanisms underlying new traffic-related apps.

The profit impact of revenue heterogeneity and assortativity in the presence of negative word-of-mouth

This study explores the adverse effects of customer disappointment after adoption accompanied by spreading negative word-of-mouth on firm profits. The study examines the effects of heterogeneity and assortativity of customer revenue on the profit impact of negative word-of-mouth that is initiated by three groups of consumers-revenue leaders, social hubs, and experts. The authors explore these effects using an agent-based simulation modeling approach and an in-depth computational experiment with empirical input data regarding social connectivity from 10 consumer social networks. The results indicate that negative word-of-mouth is more damaging in markets where there is a higher degree of heterogeneity. Moreover, assortativity may significantly affect the profit impact of disappointments, but this effect depends on the initial percentage of disappointed adopters. The study also finds an interaction between heterogeneity and assortativity, such that the effect of heterogeneity increases as assortativity increases up to a moderate level of assortativity, then the effect of heterogeneity on profits remains relatively constant. The implications from these results suggest that marketing managers should consider the heterogeneity and assortativity characteristics of their customer revenue streams to (a) better manage the adverse profit impacts of customer disappointments and negative word-of-mouth;(b) design more effective customer loyalty programs;and (c) more efficiently manage their customer equity portfolios. The support services industry remains a competitive business operating on very stringent budgets, metrics, and milestones. Given the heavy and varying workloads that are characteristic in this business, stress is a common all-too-common phenomenon and emerges from different sources. In this context, we use an agent based approach to examine whether using a workload buffering strategy based loosely on the Leaky Bucket Algorithm can help to manage work-load-related stress. We use our workplace stress model to see the implications of such a buffering approach on workload related stress at an individual level and on macro indicators such as turn-around time (TAT). The experiments show that the strategy can help not only reduce the stress but also provide knobs to the operations managers to manage workload and to ensure compliance. We conclude with implications for future research and practice.

Space information system (SIS) is a typical complex system, which challenges traditional modeling methods. agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) can be an appropriate and effective approach to modeling and simulation of SIS. Firstly, the advantages and basic concepts of ABMS are introduced briefly. Secondly, the complexity of SIS is analyzed, and it is concluded that the complexity of SIS results from the diverse component entities and their relations. Thirdly, the entities involved in SIS are classified as three categories, and on the basis, the structure models of agents and object are built, including reactive agent, cognitive agent and environment object. Finally, an implementation plan of SIS simulation is put forward, and SIS simulation system software with basic functions is developed. And the foundation of further researches on modeling and simulation of SIS is laid.

To deal with several classes of planning and management problems in different business domains (transport, energy, defense, etc.) and at different decisional levels (strategic, tactical and operational levels), significant benefits can derive from the definition of solution methods which are able to combine and capitalize on the strengths of mathematical programming and agent-based techniques. In this paper, an approach based on the joint use of mathematical programming and agent-based techniques is exploited in the context of maritime logistics. In particular, a transshipment terminal is considered with the goal of planning the container transportation between the yard and the quay during the loading/discharging operations of a containership by exploiting a pool of straddle carriers shared among the quay cranes. The goal is to route the straddle carriers by determining a sequence of container movements for each of them in order to optimize a given performance criterion. In particular, a new dispatching model is proposed and evaluated through an agent-based simulation model which also made it possible a better understanding of interesting properties of the problem under consideration.
