The purpose of this study is to develop a model to simulate the behavior of the human cardiovascular system for use in medical education. The proposed model ensures that the output of the system is accurately represented in both equilibrium conditions and imbalance conditions including in the presence of adaptive agents. In this study, field experts develop an agent-based blood vessel model, i.e., a submodel for the stated purpose. In the proposed blood vessel model, vessels are represented by agents whereas blood flow is represented by the interaction between agents. Adaptive behavior shown by vessels in terms of resistance to the blood flow is defined by the agents' properties, which are used as the basis for calculating and graphically representing the physical parameters of blood flow, specifically blood pressure, blood flow velocity, and the resistance of the vessel. The adaptation of the vessel agents is supported by a case study, which demonstrates the adaptive behavior of the blood vessel agents through a negative feedback control mechanism. The blood vessel model proposed is flexible in nature such that it can be adapted to account for the behavior of the vessel sections in any vascular structure.

The evaluation of operational effectiveness for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) swarm precision strike missions is critical in the contemporary unmanned warfare. Nonetheless, current evaluation methods often overlook the emergence and dynamic variability inherent in UAV swarm precision strikes, resulting in suboptimal evaluations. This study introduces an innovative evaluation framework with agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) to rectify these deficiencies. In alignment with established warfighting knowledge and principles, we have meticulously crafted the mission scenario and simulation environment to mirror the intricacies of UAV swarm precision strikes. Subsequently, agent models for the UAVs, radar systems, and surface-to-air missile systems have been elaborately constructed, encompassing their behavioral dynamics, functional attributes, and interactive relationships. We then conducted numerous combat simulations and collected relevant data. Finally, based on the extensive simulation data, we have conducted a multi-faceted analysis of operational effectiveness, focusing on such critical factors as maneuverability, firepower, estimation, and communication. The findings of our experimental analyses elucidate the impact of these various factors on the rates of target destruction and UAV attrition, providing a reference for decision-making processes associated with UAV swarm precision strike operations.

Analyzing demand behavior of end consumers is pivotal in long term energy planning. Various models exist for simulating household load profiles to cater different purposes. A macroscopic viewpoint necessitates modeling of a large-scale population at an aggregate level, whereas a microscopic perspective requires measuring loads at a granular level, pertinent to the individual devices of a household. Both aspects have lucrative benefits, instigating the need to combine them into a modeling framework which allows model scalability and flexibility, and to analyze domestic electricity consumption at different resolutions. In this applied research, we propose a multi-resolution agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) framework for estimating domestic electricity consumption. Our proposed framework simulates per minute electricity consumption by combining large neighborhoods, the behavior of household individuals, their interactions with the electrical appliances, their sociological habits and the effects of exogenous conditions such as weather and seasons. In comparison with the existing energy models, our framework uniquely provides a hierarchical, multi-scale, multi-resolution implementation using a multi-layer architecture. This allows the modelers flexibility in order to model large-scale neighborhoods at one end, without any loss of expressiveness in modeling microscopic details of individuals' activities at house level, and energy consumption at the appliance level, at the other end. The validity of our framework is demonstrated using a case study of 264 houses. A validated ABMS framework will support: (a) Effective energy planning;(b) Estimation of the future energy demand;(c) and the analysis of the complex dynamic behavior of the consumers.

We consider settings of group decision and negotiation where agents' preferences (such as intentions, beliefs and opinions) are influenced by each other and thus their behaviors are possibly changed. We build a multi-agent system (MASIITIB) in the context of social networks to model the mutual influence among agents' intentions and the transformation from agents' intentions to their behaviors in groups. On the micro level of individual agents, we construct the self-evolution rule of agents' intentions and the generation, constraint and termination rule of agents' behaviors;on the macro level of networked structure, we describe the mutual influence on intentions among agents, which can be diversified in both strength and polarity. We detail this multi-agent system and run experiments and simulations using the interaction of fertility intentions and the generation of fertility behaviors in families as example. Two experimental programs are designed: one is to adjust the initial fertility intentions of prospective parents, and the other is to adjust the range of weight of influence among family members, to investigate the effects on the childbearing behavior and the number of newborn children in the long-term. This study intends to provide modeling bases for the dynamics of preferences and behaviors due to mutual influence among agents in groups, particularly for the study of fertility intention and behavior in families, and more broadly, the forecast of population growth and effects of fertility policy. It is an innovative try of distributed artificial intelligence (multi-agent system) in the field of demography and public policy, and provides with a new bottom-to-up perspective and unconventional agent-based method.

The agent-based approach to modeling and simulation (ABMS) has recently become very popular, especially among researchers dealing with biological and social simulations. The ABMS approach allows for modeling complex phenomena, resulting from interactions between many individuals, in a very natural way. The agent-based approach is especially useful when it comes to simulating emergent phenomena, which usually arise from interactions between a large number of individuals, each of which acts according to some simple patterns or rules. In this paper, two agent-based models of species formation processes are presented and experimentally verified. The first one is a model in which speciation takes places as a result of geographic barriers that split the population. In the second the speciation results from existence and interactions between flocks of individuals, which presence restricts mating between individuals from the same species. During experiments, the ecosystem diversity and the number of existing species are measured using entropy-based indicators.

Maritime transportation is a mode of transportation that is widely used to transport freight. East Java is a province in Indonesia which has a strategic location in terms of maritime transportation. PT. Terminal Petikemas Surabaya (PT TPS) is one of the terminals in East Java which has the largest international container flow, however, container flows are not balanced by the investment in increasing the number of container fields in the port. In addition, too long the dwelling time makes the terminal need to provide special land for a very long time limit. Determination of the deadline for stacking containers to be exported needs to be considered so that land availability and capacity can be optimized. Therefore, this study will analyze the deadline for the accumulation of export containers at PT. Terminal Petikemas Surabaya. In this study, agent-based simulations will be conducted. Using dynamic of the containers movement we described the better setting time for occupation of the container yard. The changing of lifespan and middle value can decrease the Yard Occupation Ratio by 6%. This result can be addressed as the policy of the dwelling time and long-stay period of the container in the terminal. (C) 2019 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Model-driven engineering (MDE) is an approach for improving productivity in software development. This approach was exploited in the context of agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) only to a certain extent. Previous work has not shown real evidence of the bene fits that MDE promotes in ABMS. This paper thus explores the use of MDE in ABMS with a case study in the traffic domain. We propose a domain analysis method to identify domain concepts and a modeling language that provides building blocks for them. Our evaluation gives evidence that our MDE approach reduces the effort to develop agent-based simulations.

Changing demand trend (e-commerce business, timely delivery) has contributed to dynamism and complexity of routing problems. Despite its importance, Dynamic Vehicle Routing Problem (DVRP) has received little attention. Most of VRP works have been characterized by static and deterministic problem. To fill the gap, the present study aims at developing agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) to simulate DVRP by capturing dynamism and stochasticity. Urban freight transport serving sixty-two retailers at Yogyakarta city (Indonesia) is taken as a studied case. GIS data and Particle Swarm Optimization are embedded in ABMS to mimic retailers' location, road infrastructure in the real system and to evaluate optimal routes respectively. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of the degree of dynamism (dod) on logistics performances. Results indicate a linear relationship between the dod and both travelled distance and lateness. For every 1% increase of the dod, the travelled distance would increase,on average, by 7%.

agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) have been used to study a wide range of complex systems and several emergent behaviors across a variety of disciplines. However, very limited works have adopted these paradigms to provide insights to organizational psychology in general and to researches dealing with emotions at work in particular. The current research uses ABMS to study the emotions experienced in the organizational context;it focuses specifically on their impact on the quality of decisions made as a key factor of organizations success. In this paper, the emphasis is set on the emotion generation process. The proposed work introduces an agent-based model of the emotional experiences of employees within organizations. It adopts a cross-disciplinary approach and it brings another theoretical perspective to agent-based modeling of emotions at work. In fact, this model is based on the OCC appraisal theory to generate artificial emotions, but it also takes advantage of theoretical foundations from organization behavior and organization psychology. simulation results can bring new insights to organizational researches. Moreover, the simulated system can serve as a human resources development tool used by employees at work to enhance their emotional awareness.
