In this day and age, successful embedded critical software needs agile and continuous development and testing procedures. This paper presents the overall testing and code coverage metrics obtained during the unit testing procedure carried out to verify the correctness of the boot software that will run in the Instrument Control Unit (ICU) of the Energetic Particle Detector (EPD) on-board Solar Orbiter. The ICU boot software is a critical part of the project so its verification should be addressed at an early development stage, so any test case missed in this process may affect the quality of the overall on-board software. According to the European Cooperation for Space Standardization ESA standards, testing this kind of critical software must cover 100% of the source code statement and decision paths. This leads to the complete testing of fault tolerance and recovery mechanisms that have to resolve every possible memory corruption or communication error brought about by the space environment. The introduced procedure enables fault injection from the beginning of the development process and enables to fulfill the exigent code coverage demands on the boot software.

Strengths and barriers behind the successful agile deployment-insights from the three software intensive companies in Finland

The number of success stories being reported concerning agile software development has led to an increase in interest among industries and research communities. The purpose of this paper is to identify strengths and barriers for 'successful agile deployment' in the software companies. This knowledge can benefit software companies planning their current strategy for agile deployment. Analysis of 57 developers, architects, project managers, customers, quality managers, and line and product managers in three case companies identifies 71 strengths and 169 barriers of agile deployment. The analysis revealed the importance of management providing the necessary goals and support for agile development. It also indicated the significance of defining a tailored process model and giving developers the freedom to improve their own agile development process continuously during agile deployment. The identified barriers, strengths and recommendations can be used as a checklist for planning and/or monitoring the effectiveness of agile deployment in software companies. By identifying the barriers and strengths of agile deployment, the paper deepens understanding of this highly relevant but relatively under-researched phenomenon and contributes to the literature on agile deployment and software process improvement.

This paper outlines an ongoing empirical study on the relationship between organizational values and the deployment of agile methods. Organizational values are interpreted as preferred organizational qualities and standards which guide organizational decisions and behavior. They have been shown to have significant impact on different aspect of organizational life, including organizational commitment, performance, integrity and many more. agile methods deployment is referred as the process that occurs when agile methods are taken into use. Many determinants of agile methods acceptance and usage have been proposed and empirically evaluated. Nevertheless, organizational values have never been thoroughly examined in this regard. Our study aims to fill this gap and claims that certain attributes of organizational values correlate with the successful deployment of agile methods.

Context: Many organizations have started to deploy agile methods, but so far there exist only a few studies on organization-wide transformations. Are agile methods here to stay? Some claim that agile software development methods are in the mainstream adoption phase in the software industry, while others hope that those are a passing fad. The assumption here is that if agile would not provide real improvement, adopters would be eager at first but turn pessimistic after putting it into practice. Objective: Despite the growing amount of anecdotal evidence on the success of agile methods across a wide range of different real-life development settings, scientific studies remain scarce. Even less is known about the perception of the impacts of agile transformation when it is deployed in a very large software development environment, and whether agile methods are here to stay. This study aims to fill that gap by providing evidence from a large-scale agile transformation within Nokia. While we have yet to confirm these findings with solid quantitative data, we believe that the perception of the impacts already pinpoints the direction of the impacts of large-scale agile transformation. Method: The data were collected using a questionnaire. The population of the study contains more than 1000 respondents in seven different countries in Europe, North America, and Asia. Results: The results reveal that most respondents agree on all accounts with the generally claimed benefits of agile methods. These benefits include higher satisfaction, a feeling of effectiveness, increased quality and transparency, increased autonomy and happiness, and earlier detection of defects. Finally, 60% of respondents would not like to return to the old way of working. Conclusion: While the perception of the impact of agile methods is predominantly positive, several challenge areas were discovered. However, based on this study, agile methods are here to stay. Deploying agile methods in a large, diverse, geographically distributed setting is a challenging task. In this paper, we propose that systematic piloting is to be used in order to build experience and to overcome the most common challenges of agile deployment, such as resistance to change. We approach this by developing a method for piloting agile. This method is developed based on multiple-case study in a large embedded systems company. Based on two cases, we describe a method that transcends the encountered challenges and can help meld an agile method with a plan-driven organization.

Many organizations have started to deploy agile methods but only few extensive surveys exist on the impacts of these methods. In this study, we wanted to see if there is any change in the practitioners' opinions after one year of appliance, and if any real trends can be found from the data. The data were collected using two questionnaires. The population of the first study contains more than 100 respondents from three different continents (Europe, North America, and Asia) and seven different countries and the second study 500 respondents from the same organization. The results reveal that most respondents are satisfied agile way of working and would like to stay in agile mode. They also think using agile methods is important for the future. In two consecutive studies we can see that the opinions of the people who have actual experience on agile methods have stayed the same and that the general opinion towards agility has remained extremely positive. We also show that the opinions are reflecting the actual experience on agile methods.

DevOps is described as a software engineering culture and philosophy that utilises cross-functional teams to build, test and release software faster and more reliably through automation. Research shows that its adoption speeds up software delivery time, improve quality, security, and collaboration in software development. One controversial issue has been whether DevOps is an organisation-wide culture or a job description. As DevOps is an emerging concept, its definitions and best practices are still hazy, making its implementation in practice less informed and somewhat risky. The rising trend of DevOps adoption among software development practitioners therefore heightens the need for in-depth investigation into its *** paper seeks to contribute to the above by critically examining DevOps implementation in practice through an exploratory case study, based on interviews with 11 industry practitioners across nine organisations. Transcripts of interviews were coded and analysed using a method informed by Grounded Theory. This study provides an empirical taxonomy of DevOps implementation, describing developers' interaction with On-premises Ops, Outsourced Ops, DevOps teams, and DevOps bridge teams. We present a novel mapping of the approaches to on-premises and cloud-based deployments, and identified the facilitators of DevOps practices in the different modes. We further identified three distinct groups of activities in the fourth mode: provisioning and maintenance of physical systems, function virtualisation and creation of automated pipelines, and development, deployment and maintenance of applications, which may have given rise to the implementation of DevOps as bridge teams. Interviewees claimed these distinctions allowed developers to focus on delivering value for the business.
