agile modeling, agile software development, and extreme programming: The state of research

While there are many claims for the successful use of extreme programming (XP) and agile modeling (AM), and the proponents can often be vocal in the extreme regarding their supposed benefits, research evidence supporting proponents' claims is somewhat lacking. Currently, the only research appearing to investigate the phenomena consists of two prominent streams. A small number of case studies and experience reports that generally promote the success of XP in various development environments, and a well-established stream of research into pair programming has generated results that in part support the idea of XP Research into AM appears to be even more sparse than that for XP Case studies, comparative analyses, and experience reports comprise the majority of the research in the area, while very few empirical research efforts have been conducted. This article reviews the state of research in XP and AM, and recommends areas that could benefit from further study. Since nearly all empirical XP research relates to pair programming, a closer look into the unstudied XP core practices would be beneficial, although interaction between related core practice areas could confound such efforts. It might also be possible to group related core XP concepts and study the groups individually. Finally, there are those who claim that XP and AM, or even agility in general, are really nothing more than a repackaging of old concepts. This claim needs to be investigated.

Models may be used as a shared understanding when the project is composed by distributed agile teams. This paper describes the applicability of a process for modeling a small set of requirements and a candidate architecture for a distributed Scrum teams context, addressing the use of such models within the delivery of user stories included in a team backlog and inter-team coordination.

agile modeling (AM) provides a set of best practices of "lightweight" modeling to support the modeling process on a macro level within the agile development teams. At the core of AM is close collaboration with stakeholders which is similar to participative Enterprise modeling (EM). Hence, the objective of this paper is to analyze the potential of using EM in agile development projects to address some of the existing challenges of agile projects. We analyze the objectives and compatibility of artifacts of AM and EM, compatibility of agile Model Driven Development and the EM process, as well as the specifics the EM process and the tool support.

Aiming at the complexity of the simulation model for the agile layout of manufacturing system, an agile modeling and simulation technology is proposed based on Hierarchical Object-oriented Timed Colored Petri Net (HOTCPN) and eM-Plant software to convert workshop layout model into simulation model. HOTCPN and eM-Plant are both based on the hierarchical object-oriented method. Due to the structure similarity between HOTCPN model and eM-Plant model, the mapping relations between them are established and an automatic converting platform has been developed. Based on the developed platform, the control logic in the HOTCPN model of manufacturing system can be automatically translated into the control logic of eM-Plant simulation model, so that the rapid transform of layout model to simulation model is achieved. Finally, a manufacturing cell example is used to validate the presented method.

Decisions regarding major urban transportation projects and land use policies are frequently political and controversial, as well as having significant economic, social, and environmental consequences. UrbanSim is a disaggregate, behaviorally-realistic modeling environment that planning agencies can use to simulate the long-term effects of such decisions. We describe UrbanSim's evolution over the past decade from the perspective of supporting its appropriation by urban modelers, and identify support for experimentation as a key property that enables the adoption of an agile modeling methodology. Finally, we draw out three lessons for supporting agile modeling through experimentation: iterative development of models, providing appropriate domain-specific building blocks, and balancing the development of integrated tools versus interoperating with existing tools and the work practices that surround them.

[Context and motivation] There are a plethora of agile practices that relate to management (e.g., Sprints, Scrum ceremonies), development (e.g., pair programming, TDD, BDD, DevOps) or strategy (e.g., Lean Startup), [Question/problem] but lack a comprehensive description on how its adoption influences requirements modeling and "You Aren't Gonna Need It" (YAGNI) features. [Principal ideas/results] This paper presents agile modeling Process for Logical Architectures (AMPLA), an agile modeling (AM) oriented process composed by UML diagrams (namely, Sequence, Use Cases and Component). [Contributions] AMPLA uses agile practices in order to deliver small increments (of a requirements package) and to promote continuous customer feedback. The proposed AM process also includes a candidate architecture and further requirements refinement in parallel with a software increment delivery.

To reduce the practicing defects in ration unified process, this paper introduces a new requirement modeling process, which is based on the analysis of rational unified process with the combination of agile modeling technique. Contents of this process includes: getting the requirement in a general way, planning the developing schedule according to the requirement priority and simplifying requirement modeling of little incremental iteration etc., and the practice of this process implemented in a social insurance system showed it can improve the developing efficiency and the software quality.

Limited rationality in action: Decision support for military situation assessment

Information is a force multiplier. Knowledge of the enemy's capability and intentions may be of far more value to a military force than additional troops or firepower. Situation assessment is the ongoing process of inferring relevant information about the forces of concern in a military situation. Relevant information can include force types, firepower, location, and past, present and future course of action. Situation assessment involves the incorporation of uncertain evidence from diverse sources. These include photographs, radar scans, and other forms of image intelligence, or IMINT;electronics intelligence, or ELINT, derived from characteristics (e.g., wavelength) of emissions generated by enemy equipment;communications intelligence, or COMINT, derived from the characteristics of messages sent by the enemy;and reports from human informants (HUMINT). These sources must be combined to form a model of the situation. The sheer volume of data, the ubiquity of uncertainty, the number and complexity of hypotheses to consider, the high-stakes environment, the compressed time frame, and deception and damage from hostile forces, combine to present a staggeringly complex problem. Even if one could formulate a decision problem in reasonable time, explicit determination of an optimal decision policy exceeds any reasonable computational resources. While it is tempting to drop any attempt at rational analysis and rely purely on simple heuristics, we argue that this can lead to catastrophic outcomes. We present an architecture for a "complex decision machine" that performs rational deliberation to make decisions in real time. We argue that resource limits require such an architecture to be grounded in simple heuristic reactive processes. We thus argue that both simple heuristics and complex decision machines are required for effective decision making in real time for complex problems. We describe an implementation of our architecture applied to the problem of military situation
