In the software development process, effort estimation is essential and a critical phase for the development team in order to ensure that development tasks will be delivered within the planned time. This paper presents a confirmatory case study in an IT company, which examined its current estimation techniques and its process in the context of mobile app development in the agile process. Moreover, the study provides, and has validated, a proposed estimation technique, namely Pair-estimation, in order to enhance the accuracy of the existing technique. This study, in addition, presents the effectiveness of estimation factors/predictors in supporting the development team to manage, estimate and create subtasks for their user stories.

MBT in agile/lightweight processes: a process-centred review

This study presents a process-driven view on the use of model-based testing (MBT) in agile/lightweight processes. It argues that process-related aspects of MBT and agile processes should be explicitly considered in any practical MBT approach intended for use in agile development (AD). It demonstrates that an effective MBT approach for lightweight processes has to specify how MBT activities are integrated into a development process, how and when MBT artefacts are generated in relation to other development artefacts, and who would carry out MBT activities. Accordingly, a set of integration criteria is introduced for complete incorporation of MBT into agile/lightweight processes. The integration criteria demonstrate the specific characteristics of an appropriate MBT process for AD processes, and help identify the benefits and shortcomings of existing methods on the use of MBT in such processes. Evaluation of existing works based on the proposed integration criteria shows that they have all focused on minimal modelling, and only one method has considered the 'evolution' of test models and the 'reuse' of test cases, whereas 'evolution' and 'reuse' are essential characteristics of agile processes, which have to be addressed in any MBT approach intended for such processes.

In the present scenario when the software systems are getting increasingly complexed. The time lines and schedule are getting tightened day by day. The processes need to be expected as adaptable rather than rigid. The process of the development also needs to be redesigned. The old concept of sequential phase must be updated with the iteration. The processes must ensure the user acceptance with the accepted level of quality of the software. The need of time is that process of software development to be reviewed. The concept of Agility can be used to provide good quality solutions for the upcoming software system. The sustainable solution will be considered now onward that will be capable of maintaining quality, acceptance of changes at any time with a minimum cost and rescheduling of each phase of development. agile Software Development can be a winner of coming future. But on the downside for which many times the agile processes are criticized are inability to work with the CMMI environment, this paper proposes a new model for the agile software development, that includes Customer feedback and project documentation as its major element that makes the agile development more auditable, accountable and process centric.

Tailoring agile-Based Software Development processes

Software development process tailoring is a standard and regular practice of software development companies. Without realizing it as a regular and well-defined standard approach, companies perform it on an ad-hoc basis. Due to which, process tailoring could not be developed into a formal process and approach to managing software development, processes and projects. Software development process paradigm shift from conventional software development approaches to the agile methodologies left many companies struggling with the reusability of the existing processes and defining new processes from scratch. Limited work on process tailoring and lack of a formal approach, particularly for overwhelmingly used agile methodologies, affected the acknowledgment of this process. Addressing this limitation, present research work formulates a process tailoring framework to tailor agile-based software development processes. The proposed framework recommends tailoring three key processes of agile methodologies based on the project state considering the client's perspective and requirements. The existing literature have been reviewed to develop a theoretical framework which is verified and validated through structured interviews and case study of real projects. The framework provides a formal and a structured approach to tailor agile-based processes and methodologies.

Scrum for safety: an agile methodology for safety-critical software systems

In the last years, agile methodologies are gaining substantial momentum, becoming increasingly popular in a broad plethora of industrial contexts. Unfortunately, many obstacles have been met while pursuing adoption in secure and safe systems, where different standards and operational constraints apply. In this paper, we propose a novel agile methodology for the development and innovation of safety-critical systems. In particular, we developed an extension of the well-known Scrum methodology and discussed the complete workflow. We finally validated the applicability of the proposed methodology over a real case study from the railway domain.

A conceptual model of agile software development in a safety-critical context: A systematic literature review

Context: Safety-critical software systems are increasingly being used in new application areas, such as personal medical devices, traffic control, and detection of pathogens. A current research debate is regarding whether safety-critical systems are better developed with traditional waterfall processes or agile processes that are purportedly faster and promise to lead to better products. Objective: To identify the issues and disputes in agile development of safety-critical software and the key qualities as found in the extant research literature. Method: We conducted a systematic literature review as an interpretive study following a research design to search, assess, extract, group, and understand the results of the found studies. Results: There are key issues and propositions that we elicit from the literature and combine into a conceptual model for understanding the foundational challenges of agile software development of safety-critical systems. The conceptual model consists of four problematic practice areas and five relationships, which we find to be even more important than the problematic areas. From this review, we suggest that there are important research gaps that need to be investigated. Conclusions: We suggest that future research should have a primary focus on the relationships in the resulting conceptual model and specifically on the dynamics of the field as a whole, on incremental versus iterative development, and on how to create value with minimal but sufficient effort.

Group development and group maturity when building agile teams: A qualitative and quantitative investigation at eight large companies

The agile approach to projects focuses more on close-knit teams than traditional waterfall projects, which means that aspects of group maturity become even more important. This psychological aspect is not much researched in connection to the building of an "agile team." The purpose of this study is to investigate how building agile teams is connected to a group development model taken from social psychology. We conducted ten semi-structured interviews with coaches, Scrum Masters, and managers responsible for the agile process from seven different companies, and collected survey data from 66 group-members from four companies (a total of eight different companies). The survey included an agile measurement tool and the one part of the Group Development Questionnaire. The results show that the practitioners define group developmental aspects as key factors to a successful agile transition. Also, the quantitative measurement of agility was significantly correlated to the group maturity measurement. We conclude that adding these psychological aspects to the description of the "agile team" could increase the understanding of agility and partly help define an "agile team." We propose that future work should develop specific guidelines for how software development teams at different maturity levels might adopt agile principles and practices differently. Although traceability information is vital to many software engineering activities, agile development approaches rarely use it because of the extra effort required. In this industry case study, the authors report the results of applying their lightweight semiautomated method that integrates traceability into software architecture developed with an agile process like Scrum.

Today's software development challenges require learning teams that can continuously apply new engineering and management practices, new and complex technical skills, cross-functional skills, and experiential lessons learned. The pressure of delivering working software often forces software teams to sacrifice learning-focused practices. Effective learning under pressure involves conscious efforts to implement original agile practices such as retrospectives and adapted strategies such as learning spikes. Teams, their management, and customers must all recognize the importance of creating learning teams as the key to braving the erratic climates and uncharted territories of future software development.

URDAD as a semi-formal approach to analysis and design

The Use Case, Responsibility Driven Analysis and Design (URDAD) methodology is a methodology for technology neutral design generating the Platform Independent Model of the Object Management Group's Model Driven Architecture. It requires the coremodeling to be done in the problem space by domain specialists and not in the solution space by technology specialists. URDAD allows for formal elements to be added by different role players at different stages of the model refinement, whilst aiming to preserve agility of the outputs and low cost of the process generating the outputs. This paper discusses the semi-formal aspects of URDAD which facilitate model validation and testing, documentation generation and automated implementation mapping as well as aspects which promote agility and low cost.
