Context: agile software development is widespread in software development companies because of the benefits it provides. Design and project management metrics can be used during agile software development as a guide for taking decisions and applying corrective actions. Objective: The purpose of the paper is to present the reasons of using software and project management metrics in agile software development methodologies. There are many metrics and variations of these metrics and so this research will try to identify and classify the purposes of using metrics in the context of agile software development. Method: For the purposes of the research, a systematic mapping study was conducted. Results: The research turned out that metrics are used to achieve the following aims: (a) Improving agile processes, (b) Complying with protocols in agile methodologies, (c) Improving software quality during development, (d) Improving the quality of source code, (e) Improving estimation and planning, (f) Increasing productivity. Conclusions: This study provides researchers and practitioners with a basic overview of the use of software and project management metrics in agile software development methodologies, as well as the reasoning behind the use of such metrics.

A systematic literature review on characteristics of the front-end phase of agile software development projects and their connections to project success

Context: software development of new products and services often involves a front-end phase where user needs are analysed, costs and benefits are estimated, and initial plans are created. Goal: This study aims to learn more about how the introduction of agile software development has affected practices and outcomes related to cost and benefit estimation in this front-end phase and to understand better what would improve this phase. Method: We identified, reviewed and aggregated the results from 42 relevant research articles by searching literature databases and snowballing relevant articles. Results: The front-end phase of agile was found to be, on average, similar and just as comprehensive as that of non-agile software development. This may be unfortunate, given the finding that more successful agile software development is connected with less detail in cost estimation and planning-related activities. A less comprehensive front-end phase may be especially beneficial for low-risk agile software development. Conclusion: The results of this review suggest that agile principles, so far, have had a limited influence on the front-end phase. We recommend more flexibility and context-dependency in how the front-end phase of agile software development is conducted, including less comprehensive estimation and planning activities for low-risk software development contexts.

For years, industry institutions and academic researchers have been surveying software practitioners on agile software development methods adoption. These surveys have been useful in describing the characteristics, challenges, and impacts of agile adoption, mainly in Europe and North America. Latin American practitioners miss information on the state of agile adoption. This study aims to fill this gap by describing agile software development adoption in Brazil. We collected data from 897 countrywide-distributed practitioners. We used descriptive statistics and machine learning algorithms to understand our dataset. Results show the profile of companies and teams, characteristics of agile usage, perception of success, applied principles and practices, and reasons, challenges and impacts of agile adoption. We also explore the relevance of principles in software process improvements. We contribute by mapping the state-of-the-practice of agile adoption in Brazil and by contrasting our results to previous literature, which points out how we further current knowledge in academia.

This paper aims to present the three-dimensional (3D) packaging structure design based on the agile software development and internet of things (IoT) platform, which an efficiency validation of IoT platform is required. The objective of this research is to investigate the model development of 3D multimedia-based packaging structure using the webserver design and agile software development applied in the design and implementation process. This model development methodology comprises how the IoT platform as the client-server architecture that is used to develop and support the orthographic projection techniques, information sheet, worksheet and multimedia presentation in the modern product design. The empirical results show the creative thinking of the group of young designers that can be achieved efficiently. The proposed model development can increase significantly the fundamental knowledge and interactive design ideas of young designers combining from the two-dimension to three-dimension packaging structure model. © 2022 River Publishers.

Business analysts' contributions to the dynamic capabilities of agile software development teams

Purpose Literature reveals ongoing debates around the role of business analysts in agile software development (ASD) teams. This can be attributed, in part, to a knowledge gap concerning how business analysts contribute to overall team capabilities, particularly those which are essential in enabling teams to respond to fast-paced environmental changes. The purpose of this study was to address this gap by investigating how business analysts (BAs) contribute to the dynamic capabilities of ASD teams. Design/methodology/approach Through a deductive approach, this study adapted and applied a research model based on the team dynamic capabilities (DC) theory to explore the contributions of BAs in agile teams. The study was executed using a qualitative, single case study research strategy directed at an ASD team in the financial services industry. Moreover, data were collected through face-to-face, semi-structured interviews;a focus group;non-participant observation and physical artefacts review. The thematic analysis technique was used to analyse the data. Findings The study contributes to teams DC theory through four theoretical propositions centred on the role of BAs. The proposition highlights how BAs relationship management, tacit knowledge sharing, task mental models and transactive memory are key contributors of ASD teams' DC. The study also found that BAs contribute to ASD teams' ability to embrace agile principles 2, 4, 6 and 12. This study can inform the design of capacity development programmes for individual team members and BAs and thus help managers curate teams that will best promote DC. To meet the time requested for software industry needs, small and medium enterprises use agile methods, such as Serum, to produce software in a shorter development cycle. However, the lack of knowledge on how to implement and use agile methods correctly results in an empirical adoption of them, most of the time without getting the expected results like inefficient software development. This paper presents a proposal to evaluate agile methods, specifically Serum. The method is addressed to very small organizations (VSEs) and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In addition, the method includes a tool for its implementation that allows evaluating organizations and offering the required information to implement Serum and increase the organization's maturity using Serum.

The effect of national culture in the software development especially in agile software development industry has a considerable place since national culture affects and shapes organizations and individuals. Our study examines the impact of Turkish national culture on agile software transformations and developments in Turkey, as the first instance in/for Turkey scope, to the best of our knowledge. We conducted semi-structured interviews with fourteen experts in prominent nine companies from three major industries including TechFin, Aviation, and Telecommunication. In the study, motivations of organizations for transforming agile, challenges with transitioning to agile, agile culture specific to Turkey and preferences on agile frameworks in Turkey were investigated. The results were discussed along with their implications for agile in Turkey by considering Hofstede's model which is designed to investigate country-level cultural traits. Our results are largely parallel with the existing knowledge of Hofstede Insights specific to Turkish culture, yet we additionally present the impacts of this national culture of Turkey on the country's agile software development. Consequently, it was observed that the national cultural background has a considerable effect on the Turkish agile software development domain. We have witnessed some similar effects in the Eastern culture as well. By providing the country's cultural patterns through a localized lens, the study may contribute to those who may have a practical interest to Turkish in terms of which potential challenges they need to be prepared for once they move into the adoption of agile working in/with this country and more generally in/with the countries with which has similar cultures as in the Eastern civilizations. Our study also comes with global insights to the other countries in terms of understanding the use of agile methods and practices in companies located outside of the early adopters of agile methods.

A Qualitative Study on Non-Functional Requirements in agile software development

Context: Widespread use of agile software development (ASD) methods can be observed nowadays. Non-functional requirements (NFRs) are often reported to be a problematic issue for agile projects, since ASD methods tend to neglect NFRs while focusing on incremental delivery of functional features. Despite that, only very few studies have explored the requirements engineering practices used in ASD and dedicated particularly to NFRs. Objective: We aimed to identify and investigate the practices used in industrial ASD projects to identify, elicit and document NFRs. Method: We conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) and used its findings to prepare an interview guide. We then conducted a series of semi-structured interviews with 10 experienced practitioners. Results: The SLR revealed a number of strategies related to the timing of NFR identification as well as 13 elicitation practices and 20 documentation techniques. At least some of these findings show discrepancies between ASD theory and practice. The interviews provided a more in-depth understanding of the practices used, and their context. The main findings from the interviews include: practitioners' attempts to start identifying NFRs early in the project, a lack of elicitation techniques aimed at NFRs only, and different choices about documentation techniques, including the additional techniques introduced to cope specifically with NFRs. Conclusions: It was not confirmed that requirements engineering activities related to NFRs are perceived by ASD practitioners as a problem, as they developed effective practices to deal with this issue. Moreover, our findings show that different approaches to NFRs can be used and give satisfactory results.

ARP-GWO: an efficient approach for prioritization of risks in agile software development

Risk management is considered as a critical project management activity that needs to be performed for successful software development. Within risk management, risk prioritization is an important process which helps the software team to effectively manage the risks at early stage of the project. In agile-based software environment, it is necessary to prioritize the risks in an effective manner in order to address the risks in shorter duration of time. In recent times, swarm intelligence techniques are widely popular in solving various optimization problems in software development process. The main reason is due to its convergence accuracy toward global optimal solution and faster computational time. In this study, an efficient risk prioritization technique termed as ARP-GWO (agile risk prioritization-grey wolf optimization) has been proposed for prioritizing the risk factors present in the agile software development using grey wolf optimization (GWO). The proposed ARP-GWO method helps the organization to mitigate the risks and ensures successful delivery of software products with good quality, in lesser cost and time. The effectiveness of ARP-GWO is analyzed using two performance metrics, namely Index of Integration and Usability Goals Achievement Metric, for which case studies are performed on five industrial projects from two different organizations. The experimental results indicate that ARP-GWO is most effective in prioritization of risks and offers better enhancement with high degree of satisfaction among developers and users as compared with the existing agile process.

One healthcare organization in Indonesia has implemented agile software development (ASD) to complete software development. The organization's problems are post-deployment system bugs, and some software development projects must carry over to the following year. This study aims to assess and provide recommendations for improving agile software development by identifying the challenges faced. Research conducts literature reviews on previous research to identify challenges in ASD in several organizations. Research is also conducted using quantitative methods by surveying software development teams to validate implementation challenges and provide recommendations for these challenges. The results of this study were in the form of a survey attended by thirty-one respondents. The study results found that 14 challenges were faced in other organizations, and 11 were faced by one healthcare organization in Indonesia. Healthcare organizations in Indonesia can apply recommendations to make awareness related to understanding agile software development culture and make adjustments to project documentation by aligning with agile values.
