Context: software process improvement (SPI) is known as a key for being successful in software development. Measuring quality and performance is of high importance in agile software development as agile approaches focussing strongly on short-term success in dynamic markets. Even if software engineering research emphasizes the importance of performance metrics while using agile methods, the literature lacks on detail how to apply such metrics in practice and what challenges may occur while using them. Objective: The core objective of our study is to identify challenges that arise when using agile software development performance metrics in practice and how we can improve their successful application. Method: We decided to design a mixed-method study. First, we performed a rapid literature review to provide an up-to-date overview of used performance metrics. Second, we conducted a single case study using a focus group approach and qualitative data collection and analysis in a real-world setting. Results: Our results show that while widely used performance metrics such as story points and burn down charts are widely used in practice, agile software development teams face challenges due to a lack of transparency and standardization as well as insufficient accuracy. Contributions: Based on our findings, we present a repository of widely used performance metrics for agile software development. Furthermore, we present implications for practitioners and researchers especially how to deal with challenges agile software development face while applying such metrics in practice.

agile methodologies have become a cornerstone in information system development, offering faster time-to-market for systems and applications. This research systematically reviews how requirement engineering (RE) processes are conducted in agile software development, examining both traditional methods and emerging tools. A systematic literature review was conducted, analyzing various academic sources to identify prevalent practices and tools in agile RE, focusing on methodologies such as interviews and tools like ARAM, OOSA, and Mind Mapping. The key findings indicate a strong preference for interviews as a primary method in agile RE and significant integration of tools like ARAM, OOSA, and Mind Mapping, which facilitate the RE process in agile environments. The study highlights the evolving nature of RE in agile software development, showcasing a blend of traditional and innovative approaches, and provides valuable insights for practitioners aiming to optimize RE processes within agile frameworks.

agile software development provides a different approach to agile projects. This approach emphasizes employing experienced and committed individuals. In this approach, team management is different from what the disciplined methods defined. In this condition, team organization, team members' roles, and responsibilities, and project control methods need to be defined in a new form. Although some agile methods define particular roles, it seems that team structure in agile projects in real projects is different from what is expected. This paper aimed to propose a common team structure and setup for agile teams in practice. Differences in the agile and plan-driven approaches in software development lead to define new concepts such as team self-organization, on-site customer, leadership, and collaboration in agile teams. Also, some new roles and responsibilities have been defined in agile teams, including Technical Lead, Product Owner, Architecture Owner, Developer, etc.

Knowledge diffusion trajectories of agile software development research: A main path analysis

Context: The dramatic growth of agile software development (ASD) research has resulted in a large number of diverse theoretical and empirical publications. The citation relationships among these publications indicate knowledge dissemination across and within academia or scientists. Objective: This study offers a comprehensive understanding of the ASD literature by exploring the knowledge diffusion path through the citation network of publications that have made significant contributions to its research development. Method: We employ a quantitative citation-based methodology, main path analysis (MPA), to examine the citation relationship of 1431 scientific articles published in the Web of Science (WoS) between 2001 and 2021 and visualize the MPA results using Pajek software. Results: Through citation analysis this study discovers knowledge diffusion trajectories of publications concerning ASD method. Our key results present 32 publications identified along the key-route main path as the most influential ones in the trajectories of ASD. There are three phases of ASD research development: introduction, evaluation, and deployment and expansion. Using the multiple-global main path, we further uncover the publication trends from a set of recent papers and reveal four sub-themes: tailoring of agile practices, large-scale agile context, challenges and success factors of large-scale organizations, and agile global software development. Conclusions: Although there was little academic interest in the initial phase, ASD-related publication and citation trends have consistently increased over time. The historical development of ASD methods was established in three distinct phases of publications in the domain. Each phase presents a narrative of agile methods' development with different focuses. The most recent trends of ASD publications tend to focus on the agile tailoring and scaling process in the global and distributed environment.

This research examines the integration of sustainability principles within agile software development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodologies. While agile frameworks such as GLUX emphasize user experience and adaptability, they often prioritize software stability primarily during design and implementation phases, potentially neglecting long-term sustainability considerations. Our study posits that incorporating sustainability as a core element in agile SDLC is essential for developing software that demonstrates optimal performance, environmental consciousness, and long-term cost-effectiveness. Through a comprehensive systematic literature review, we analyzed 67 papers selected from an initial pool of 1900 studies, employing qualitative research methods to extract and evaluate hypotheses regarding sustainable practices in agile development. The findings reveal a significant gap in current agile methodologies concerning long-term software viability. This deficiency impedes the software's ability to adapt to evolving requirements, thus limiting its full potential. Our research proposes novel frameworks and approaches to address this limitation, aiming to ensure sustainability throughout the agile development process. By identifying and analyzing relevant procedures and methods that contribute to sustainability within the agile framework, this study provides valuable insights for both researchers and practitioners. The proposed integrative approach extends beyond immediate usability concerns, focusing on software products' long-term adaptability and viability. This research contributes to the growing knowledge of sustainable software development and offers practical guidelines for implementing sustainability measures within agile frameworks. The findings highlight the importance of improving software longevity and adaptability in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

software security is a complex topic, and for development projects it can be challenging to assess what security is necessary and cost-effective. agile software development (ASD) values self-management. Thus, teams and their Product Owners are expected to also manage software security prioritisation. In this paper we build on the notion that security experts who want to influence the priority given to security in ASD need to do this through interactions and support for teams rather than prescribing certain activities or priorities. But to do this effectively, there is a need to understand what hinders and supports teams in prioritising security. Based on a longitudinal case study, this article offers insight into the strategy used by one security professional in an SME to influence the priority of security in software development projects in the company. The main result is a model of influences on security prioritisation that can assist in understanding what supports or hinders the prioritisation of security in ASD, thus providing recommendations for security professionals. Two alternative strategies are outlined for software security in ASD - prescribed and emerging - where we hypothesise that an emerging approach can be more relevant for SMEs doing ASD, and that this can impact how such companies should consider software security maturity. agile approaches help software development project teams to better meet user needs and ensure flexibility in uncertain environments. But using agile approaches invites changes to the project and increases interactions between team members, which both cause interruptions in the workplace. While interruptions can help in task completion and increase process flexibility, they can also hinder employee productivity. We conducted an exploratory study of four agile software development teams. Our analysis identified (1) programming-related work impediments, (2) interaction-related interruptions, and (3) interruptions imposed by the external environment, which were managed by improved information retrieval and reduced team dependencies.

The cyber offense-defense balance theory evaluates the relative effort offense and defense forces need to prevail in conflict. Cyber conflict is a large domain, and many factors influence the offense-defense balance. Recent investments into Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) and agile development can be used to make more accurate predictions using existing cyber offense-defense models. This paper predicts future shifts in the balance of cyber warfare caused by the current and projected capabilities of AI-augmented agile software development pipelines. Initially, increased investments and capabilities are predicted to give an advantage to aggressing forces. Over time, however, technology advances and more standardized processes will likely create a more significant advantage for defensive capabilities.

The agile software development (ASD) replaced other traditional approaches such as a waterfall or incremental, in which there is no instrument used for changing requirements. agile is a better method to run the company and economy, as it satisfies the clients via timely and continual delivery of software. Nowadays, it has become the most well-known technique because it accepts the change requirements of the projects. Hence, it is difficult to get precise cost estimation because of continuous changes. Nevertheless, we acknowledge that in the context of ASD, various effort estimation techniques have been reported. However, to the best of our knowledge, existing effort estimation techniques/models do not include the additional factors needed to compute accurate effort estimation in the context of ASD. It is beneficial to identify all the factors contributing to the cost overhead to improve the agile effort estimation process. Thus, the research aims to find out important and relevant factors in the ASD context. Moreover, the most common challenges and reasons for improving effort estimation in ASD are also highlighted. We believe that the results of this research could be helpful to assist the practitioners working in the ASD environment.

Over the last two decades, agile software development has gained popularity among software engineering re-searchers and practitioners. However, the development and use of theories in agile research remain relatively low. While analyzing publications on agile software development in the Scopus database from the last decade, we found that only 7% of the papers used or developed a theory. This trend seems stable. However, it is promising that most theory-centric studies use or propose theories to address cognitive and behavioral aspects of people working in agile development. We argue that these aspects build fundamental pillars in agile software devel-opment. In this special section, we introduce extended versions of four papers selected from the XP2020 Con-ference. These papers make valuable contributions to aspects of learning and behavior in agile software development. We encourage researchers to be more theory-centric in their future empirical studies of agile methods and practices by familiarizing themselves with existing theories and applying and developing theories. This way, they can contribute to a reliable, evidence-based body of knowledge in our community.
