Transforming into agile ways of working in large organizations can be performed in different ways. Many organizations choose a defined large-scale agile software development framework but how the transformation is carried out could be based on different sorts of logics. This paper investigates institutional logics at play in large-scale agile transformations. By studying two case organizations, the paper aims at improving our understanding of large-scale transformations by viewing software development as an institution. The findings displays diverse impacts due to two differing institutional logics when transforming into large-scale agile software development by implementing the Scaled agile Framework. One contribution of this paper is to show the possibilities of using two institutional logics, agile toolbox logic and agile rulebook logic, for analyzing impacts of agile transformations.

Context: agile methods have limitations concerning problem understanding and solution finding, which can cause organizations to push misguided products and accrue waste. Some authors suggest combining agile methods with discovery-oriented approaches to overcome this, with notable candidates being User-Centered Design (UCD) and Lean Startup, a combination of which there is yet not a demonstrated, comprehensive study on how it works. Objective: To characterize a development approach combination of agile software development, UCD, and Lean Startup;exposing how the three approaches can be intertwined in a single development process and how they affect development. Method: We conducted a case study with two industry software development teams that use this combined approach, investigating them through interviews, observation, focus groups, and a workshop during a nine-month period in which they were stationed in a custom-built development lab. Results: The teams are made up of user advocates, business advocates, and solution builders;while their development approach emphasizes experimentation by making heavy use of build-measure-learn cycles. The combined approach promotes a problem-oriented mindset, encouraging team members to work together and engage with the entire development process, actively discovering stakeholders needs and how to fulfill them. Each of its approaches provide a unique contribution to the development process: UCD fosters empathy with stakeholders and enables teams to better understand the problem they are tasked with solving;Lean Startup introduces experimentation as the guiding force of development;and Extreme Programming (the teams' agile method) provides support to experimentation and achieving technical excellence. Conclusion: The combined approach pushes teams to think critically throughout the development effort. An agile development team estimates the effort of a work item to plan a sprint (i.e., an iteration in Scrum). Hence, reliable effort estimation would help the team create a reliable sprint plan. Prior studies proposed automated approaches to help the team to estimate the effort accurately. However, the effort estimated by the previously proposed approaches may become inaccurate when the related information is changed. Especially when the estimated effort is changed after the sprint has been planned, the sprint plan may be invalidated and the team might waste their time and effort spent in planning. This thesis aims to help the agile development team improve the stability of effort estimation (in the Story Points unit) while aligning with the just-in-time practice of agile. Hence, we first conduct empirical studies using mixed-methods approaches to investigate the potential impact of instability of Story Points. To help an agile team to achieve reliable effort estimation with optimal effort, we will develop approaches to predict the future Story Points changes and the future information changes to help the team cope with uncertainty when finalizing the sprint plan.

This study uses Kolb's experiential learning theory (ELT) [1] to teach agile software development. ELT was used in two ways to enrich and enhance students' learning during this course. The goal of this new teaching technique was to give students industry/real-life experience while still at the university. The overarching idea was to make them understand the relationship between the theory and the practical use of the course. The motivation was to have students visualize the fundamental concepts of agile methodologies and manifestos while playing. Hence, the system was taught by real-life software development using agile methodology.

Context: Estimating effort has always been considered an important element at the start of each software development project. The challenge of estimating the effort of software development lies in its precision. With the emergence of agile methodologies, methods for effort estimation (EE) had to adapt to this new development path. In this article, we are conducting a systematic mapping study on effort estimation in the context of agile software development. Objective : we want to identify the estimation approaches and techniques used in the context of agile development to better understand the specifics and trends relating to this mode of development. Method: we conducted a systematic mapping study by adopting the guideline explained in[1] [2]. A systematic review of the literature [3] has already been carried out for publications between 2001 and 2013. This work is an extension of this previous study. We queried 5 electronic databases. Conclusion : We retrieved 11350 paper from five electronic databases. A total of 108 papers is selected after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Based on the results, there is a general increase over the years of studies concerning effort estimation in agile software development.

The journey to technical excellence in agile software development

Context: Technical excellence is a nebulous term in agile software development. This vagueness is risky because it may lead to misunderstandings and to agile implementations that may overlook a key principle of agile development. Objective: This study investigates how agile practitioners interpret the concept of technical excellence brought up in Principle 9 of the agile manifesto. Moreover, we investigate how agile practitioners put the concept into practice and what conditions facilitate putting technical excellence into practice. Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews with twenty agile practitioners, coded the data inductively, and performed two sessions to validate the emerging findings. Results: We find that technical excellence is first and foremost a mindset that is underpinned by continuous attention to sustainable code, continuous learning, and teamwork. Fostering technical excellence requires the adoption of design and development practices, such as continuous architecting, and is supported by continuous learning. We also identify three enabling conditions for technical excellence: Leadership support, customer buyin, and psychological safety. These enablers provide teams with leeway to nurture their pursuit of technical excellence. Conclusion: Our findings highlight the key role of people-based strategies in promoting technical excellence in agile software development. They show that the attainment of technical excellence does not only involve technical practices. On the contrary, it relies on social and organizational support and, most importantly, a mindset.

Towards optimal quality requirement documentation in agile software development: A multiple case study

Context: agile software development (ASD) promotes minimal documentation and often prioritizes functional requirements over quality requirements (QRs). The minimal documentation emphasis may be beneficial in reducing time-to-market for software. However, it can also be a concern, especially with QRs, since they are challenging to specify and document and are crucial for software success. Therefore, understanding how practitioners perceive the importance of QR documentation is valuable because it can provide insight into how they approach this task. It also helps in developing models and guidelines that support the documentation of QRs in ASD, which is a research gap. Objective: We aim to understand practitioners' perceptions of QR documentation and factors influencing this task to derive a model that supports optimal QR documentation in ASD. Method: We conducted a multiple case study involving 12 participants from three cases that apply ASD. Results: Practitioners identify QR documentation as important and perceive it as contributing to ensuring quality, clarifying QRs, and facilitating decision-making. Time constraints, QR awareness, and communication gaps affect QR documentation. Missing and outdated QR documentation may lead to technical debt and a lack of common understanding regarding QRs. We introduce a model to support optimal QR documentation in ASD by focusing on the factors: time constraints, QR awareness, and communication gaps. The model provides a representation and explanation of the factors affecting QR documentation in ASD and identifies mitigation strategies to overcome issues that may occur due to these factors. Conclusion: The study reveals the importance of documenting QRs in ASD. It introduces a model that is based on empirical knowledge of QR documentation practices in ASD. This study examines changing team cognition and cognitive artifact use as agile software development iterations progress to better understand team member interactions. The four case studies conducted observed the distributed cognition on the team changing from planning, managing, developing, and concluding tasks in iterations to deliver working functionality. Cognitive artifacts used throughout the iteration also changed. This study provides a clearer understanding of how and when team cognition and artifact use change as agile software development teams use artifacts to manage projects. Interactions between team members and artifacts move from individual to social interactions as the iteration progresses with frequent, short, continuous communication and interactions.

Scrum is an important and essential technique for developing software. Scrum framework is a project management technique that can emphasize software development teamwork. If you are starting, consider scrum as a method for accomplishing tasks as a team in manageable chunks simultaneously, with ongoing experimentation and feedback loops to learn and improve as you go. Scrum enables individuals and groups to collaboratively and gradually generate value. Being an agile framework, scrum gives people and teams the perfect structure to fit into their workflows while still including the best practices to cater to their requirements. There are some important considerations for security in the agile software development process such as threat modeling, secure coding practices, continuous security testing, authentication, and authorization. In this work, we reviewed various scrum developing techniques to find out the research gaps. This article consider the scrum technique with blockchain technologies for review because it is preferred by most of the software industries.

Despite having several advantages, agile methodology and its variants tend to hamper the development of innovative solutions as end-user needs are not considered. The integration of agile to User Centered Design is therefore a topic of great interest for both academicians and industry professionals as it enables organizations to benefit from the advantages of agile methods while working on its drawbacks. The analytical tools ScientoPy, VOSviewer and bibliometrix were used to understand the co-relationships between 542 articles obtained from the Scopus database using the scientometric technique. Following a review which spans from the conception of agile in 2001 to the present date, generic concepts such as usability, humans, and usability evaluation and specific terms such as commerce, aged, adult and outcome assessment surfaced as the main keywords. Furthermore, most of the concepts referred to in 2002-2012 have emerged as software design in the last 10 years. Usability, agile methods, and usability evaluation were identified as the trendiest topics even though these three are below 20% with the slightest percentage of documents published in the last years 2021-2022. The trend analysis shows the decline of usability, agile methods, and usability evaluation and the emergence of systematic literature review, UX, MHealth and mobile apps.
