This paper presents the results of an exploratory research study that investigates factors contributing to preference for the agile software development approaches. The initial exploration revolves around the Five Factor Model of personality and the premise that these personality factors provide a partial explanation of preference for an agile approach. A survey instrument for measuring the preference for agile methods was developed and validated. The results from the quantitative data collected from the survey study indicate that three out of the five personality factors from the Five Factor Model show a correlation with above average preference for agile methods. These factors are extraversion, openness and neuroticism. The first two have a positive relationship with agile preference while neuroticism (emotional instability) has a negative relationship with agile methodology preference. To further investigate the results, an exploratory factor analysis was performed on the data, which identified three factors that may also contribute to a preference for agile methods.

As the world is heading into a new era of software development (SD) an agile Mindset (AM) has been seen to provide valuable underlying guiding elements to navigate an increasingly interconnected, turbulent, and dynamic business landscape, a VUCA-world. This study investigates the topic of agile methods and an AM through multiple-case studies with IT professionals from four tech companies. The study gathers early-stage research data to better understand what an agile SD team member does on an everyday basis in their work to exercise and achieve an AM, and what factors in the organization are impacting them in being able to do so. VUCA has been utilized as a conceptual background through which the findings - AM means and influences - have been identified, concluding that there is still much to be harnessed and learned about the elements of an AM that can improve project success outcomes.

Unlike traditional software development methods, agile methods are marked by extensive collaboration, i.e. face-to-face communication. Although claimed to be beneficial, the software development community as a whole is still unfamiliar with the role of the requirements engineering practices in agile methods. The term "agile requirements engineering" is used to define the "agile way" of planning, executing and reasoning about requirements engineering activities. Moreover, not much is known about the challenges posed by collaboration-oriented agile way of dealing with requirements engineering activities. Our goal is to map the evidence available about requirements engineering practices adopted and challenges faced by agile teams in order to understand how traditional requirements engineering issues are resolved using agile requirements engineering. We conducted a systematic review of literature published between 2002 and June 2013 and identified 21 papers, that discuss agile requirements engineering. We formulated and applied specific inclusion and exclusion criteria in two distinct rounds to determine the most relevant studies for our research goal. The review identified 17 practices of agile requirements engineering, five challenges traceable to traditional requirements engineering that were overcome by agile requirements engineering, and eight challenges posed by the practice of agile requirements engineering. However, our findings suggest that agile requirements engineering as a research context needs additional attention and more empirical results are required to better understand the impact of agile requirements engineering practices e.g. dealing with non-functional requirements and self-organising teams. One of the main dilemmas with which software development teams face is how to choose a software development method that suits the team as well as the organization. This article suggests a theory that may help in this process. Specifically, Extreme Programming (XP) is analyzed within the well known framework of the prisoner dilemma. We suggest that such an analysis may explain in what situations XP may fit for implementation and, when it is used, the way it may support software development processes.

Uncertainties are ubiquitous in software development. They impact almost every aspect of a development project. Most uncertainties are viewed as threats to project efficiency and there are strong calls to their reduction. However, uncertainties can pose opportunities for creativity and innovation in some situations. The literature has been dominated by discussions that focus on requirements uncertainties. We aim to extend these discussions by drawing attention to additional types of uncertainties, namely resource, task, and output uncertainties. In this empirical study we investigate the potential of agile software development methods to manage these different types of uncertainties, and examine the mechanisms available to development teams. Our results reveal how some agile teams seized mechanisms to harvest positive and mitigate negative impacts of uncertainties. Drawing upon these results, we discuss several antecedents of successful uncertainty management.

The Waterfall model has been widely applied in the software development. However, agile software development methods have emerged to enhance the adaptability to the changing market demands and to utilize evolutionary releases. The most widely adopted agile method is the Scrum framework. Ericsson Finland is implementing Scrum. To support the transition, the thesis identifies the stakeholders of the product backlog and the data the stakeholders demand and provide. With a simplification, it can be stated that the product backlog is a prioritized list of items to be performed to complete a feature. Based on a literature review including a benchmark of other telecommunication domain companies, open-ended interviews (n = 6), and semi-structured interviews (n = 11), the thesis lists the stakeholders and their actions at each decision point. The decision framework, which has emerged in-house, was utilized to structure the thesis. A matrix mapping the actions by each stakeholder at each decision point was formed. The primary data, which the stakeholders require directly and indirectly from the product backlog, are the velocity, work to be done, the date of feature completion, dependencies, costs, and business value. It is important to note that the stakeholders need the data on different levels and for different purposes. Hence, the feasible visualization of the data varies among the stakeholders. In addition to identifying the stakeholders and the requirements for data, the thesis points out three findings regarding areas to be enhanced. First, multiple stakeholders currently demand their own product backlog. Second, multiple handovers are conducted. Third, the innovation process is isolated. However, multiple findings supporting the current organizational thinking of the implementation emerged. For instance, the teams are cross-functional, the product ownership responsibility is shared, and the scope of a new feature is optimized to not to include additional functionality

The present paper proposes a Machine learning technique for defect forecasting and handling for SQA called appendage log training and analysis, can be referred as ALTA. The proposed defect forecasting of in-appendage software development logs works is to deal the forecasted defects accurately and spontaneously while developing the software. The present proposed mechanism helps in minimizing the difficulty of SQA. The overall study is conducted on evaluating the proposed model which indicates the defect forecasting in-appendage software development log training and analysis is significant growth to lessen the complexity of software Quality Assessment.

The dynamic nature of agile methods and volatility of requirements claim frequent team collaboration. This collaboration encompasses various socio-technical aspects like knowledge sharing, communication etc. In this paper our aim is twofold. First, we identified the most relevant socio-technical aspects of requirementsdriven collaboration;and second, we reviewed those aspects in literature for agile teams. We conducted a questionnaire based survey with agile practitioners for identification of the most relevant sociotechnical aspects of requirements-driven collaboration. The survey results revealed that practitioners consider communication and awareness the most relevant socio-technical aspects of requirementsdriven collaboration among many. Furthermore, the review results showed that less research has been done on social aspects(e.g. awareness) involved in agile requirements engineering activities. Hence this study provides implications in terms of more empirical investigations to further the knowledge on the social aspects of requirements-driven collaboration among agile teams.
