Image contrast enhancement (ICE) is an important step in image processing and analysis as the quality of an image plays a pivotal role in human understanding. Moreover, contrast is considered a key aspect for the assessment of picture quality. Incomplete beta function (IBF) is one of the widely used transformations and histogram equalization (HE) is also one of the most popular methods used for this task. However, HE has some limitations as the local contrast of an image cannot be uniformly enhanced. In the present work, a contrast enhancement method is proposed for grey-scale images based on a recent socio-inspired meta-heuristic called political optimizer (PO). The PO algorithm follows the multi-phased process of politics. The exploitative capability of PO is improved by combining it with the adaptive beta-hill climbing (A beta HC) which is regarded as one of the best local search techniques. The hybridization of these two algorithms is then used to find the optimal values of pixels which can intensify the hidden characteristic of the low-contrast images. The proposed algorithm is tested over a publicly available Kodak image dataset along with some standard images and evaluated in terms of standard metrics. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can successfully outperform many existing methods considered here for comparison.

In this paper, a novel variational model with box constraints is proposed to restore images corrupted by impulse noise. The proposed model is composed of fractional-order total variation regularization and L-p-fidelity term (0 < p < 1). Moreover, the new model possesses the advantages of preserving sharp edges and removing blocking effect. To solve the proposed model, some auxiliary variables are first introduced to transform it into some easy-to-solve subproblems. Further, the alternating direction method of multipliers, iteratively re-weighted l(1) algorithm and fast iteration technique are adopted to solve the related subproblems. Numerical results show that the proposed model performs better in comparison with the several existing methods, in terms of both quantitative evaluation and visual quality.

The front-of-pack nutrition label Nutri-Score aims to inform the consumer about the nutritional quality of pre-packaged foods. It currently relies on an algorithm developed in 2016. In 2022, in the framework of the transnational governance of Nutri-Score, the interna-tional scientific committee in charge of the update of the algorithm highlighted some points of improvement and proposed some modifications to the initial algorithm of 2016. This study aimed to demonstrate that the updated Nutri-Score algorithm is more effective than the old one in terms of discriminating between sandwich breads based on their nutritional quality, based on criteria such as salt and fibre content, in which sandwich breads is high (particularly whole -grain bread). The data from 326 white bread loaves and 158 whole grain loaves from the Open Food Facts database were studied. With the update, white and whole grain loaves underwent a shift from classes A and B to classes B and C respectively. The update of the Nutri-Score algorithm allows for better discrimination of foods based on their fibre content (P < 10-3), but no difference in the ability to discriminate salt is observed. The modification of the Nutri-Score algorithm allows a more effective discrimination of sandwich breads on their fibre content.(c) 2023 Societe francaise de nutrition.
