A software antenna, which will bo a key device realizing flexible and highly reliable wireless communications systems, is inherently matched with software defined radios (SDR). In this paper first, key technologies on the software antenna are introduced. The technologies contain i) how to recognize the radio environment, ii) how to determine the optimum adaptive signal processing algorithm and iii) how to reconfigure the digital beamforming circuit. Then, an image of a software antenna with reconfiguration eigenvector-beamspace configuration is presented. Finally, by assuming various propagation conditions, per formance of the software antenna in terms of algorithm diversity is demonstrated.

Socio-technical MAS are an intrinsic part of our daily lives. Domains like energy, transport, etc. are increasingly using technology to allow individual users to adapt to, and even influence the aggregate performance of the system. This raises expectations of fairness and equitability, while being engaged in such MAS. Given the autonomous and decentralized nature of socio-technical MAS, it can be difficult to ensure that each agent gets a fair reward for participating in the system. We introduce the notion of algorithmic diversity as a mechanism for nudging the system, in a decentralized manner, to a more equitable state. We use the minority game as an exemplar of a transportation network in a city, and show how diversity of algorithms results in a fairer reward distribution than any individual algorithm alone.

Hardware implementations of stream and other ciphers are vulnerable to natural faults. Moreover, attackers can launch fault attacks on these implementations. Concurrent error detection is used as a countermeasure against natural and malicious faults. We propose an algorithm diversity (AD) to detect natural and malicious faults in stream ciphers. We compare AD with hardware, time, and information redundancies. Hardware redundancy has 100% hardware overhead, but is not secure against fault attacks. Time redundancy has lower hardware overhead, but is vulnerable to faults that are injected in both the computation and recomputation. Information redundancy techniques, such as parity, cannot detect an even number of faulty bits. Information redundancy techniques, such as robust code, have higher fault miss rate (FMR) with higher hardware overhead. If robust code is configured to have lower FMR than AD in certain attacker model, the hardware overhead is excessively high. AD provides higher security compared to existing techniques. It enables a cost-effective tradeoff between security, performance overhead, and hardware overhead.

In this paper, we present heterogeneous hard thresholding (HHT) framework for distributed compressed sensing (DCS). The proposed HHT framework takes into consideration the possibility of disparity in computational capabilities among the nodes and allows each node to use its own individual greedy or thresholding based algorithm for carrying out a local update. The resulting local estimates are then shared in the network using diffusion mechanism. Each node then carries out a linear combination of the resulting estimates from its neighbors followed by a hard thresholding step. Nodes have an option of carrying out a pursuit step on top of the hard thresholding step depending upon their computational capability. The analysis for the proposed HHT framework is carried out using restricted isometry property (RIP) and sufficient conditions in terms of restricted isometry constants (RICs) are derived thereafter. Extensive numerical simulations are carried out and it is seen that by employing different strategies for the local update at distinct nodes, the recovery performance is improved as compared to the existing diffusion based methods that employ a single strategy for carrying out the local update.

Proposal for system diversity on software defined radio

Software defined radio (SDR) is receiving much attention as the key technology to realize the next generation wireless communication system. This paper proposes the concept of system diversity on SDR and investigates the effectiveness of system diversity by using a concrete simulation model. System diversity allows the wireless communication system being used to be dynamically changed in addition to the signal processing algorithm or modulation/coding scheme being used. To clarify the validity of system diversity, we examine a system simulation model consisting of three wireless communication systems;algorithms are introduced to show how system diversity can be controlled using the QoS parameters of received signal level, data transmission rate, and channel capacity. The process by which system diversity switching is triggered is elucidated, and a practical example is introduced. Simulation results confirm that system diversity offers higher performance in terms of data throughput, and system channel capacity than existing wireless communication systems. Finally, a comprehensive algorithm is described that protects existing single-mode traffic from being degraded by SDR switching.

The issue of integrating preference information into multi-objective optimization is considered, and a multi objective framework based on decomposition and preference information, called indicator-based MOEA/D (IBMOEA/D), is presented in this study to handle the multi-objective optimization problems more effectively. The proposed algorithm uses a decomposition-based strategy for evolving its working population, where each individual represents a subproblem, and utilizes a binary quality indicator-based selection for maintaining the external population. Information obtained from the quality improvement of individuals is used to determine which subproblem should be invested at each generation by a power law distribution probability. Thus, the indicator-based selection and the decomposition strategy can complement each other. Through the experimental tests on seven many-objective optimization problems and one discrete combinatorial optimization problem, the proposed algorithm is revealed to perform better than several state-of-the-art multi-objective evolutionary algorithms. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is also analyzed in detail.

To deal with the multi-objective optimization problems (MOPS), a meta-heuristic based on an improved shuffled frog leaping algorithm (ISFLA) which belongs to memetic evolution is presented. For the MOPs, both diversity maintenance and searching effectiveness are crucial for algorithm evolution. In this work, modified calculation of crowding distance to evaluate the density of a solution, memeplex clustering analyses based on a grid to divide the population, and new selection measure of global best individual are proposed to ensure the diversity of the algorithm. A multi-objective extremal optimization procedure (MEOP) is also introduced and incorporated into ISFLA to enable the algorithm to evolve more effectively. Finally, the experimental tests on thirteen unconstrained MOPs and DTLZ many-objective problems show that the proposed algorithm is flexible to handle MOPs and many-objective problems. The software antenna: A new concept of kaleidoscopic antenna in multimedia radio and mobile computing era

Based on a recent remarkable development of digital beamforming (DBF) antenna technologies, we propose a new concept of kaleidoscopic antenna, we call it ''software antenna,'' which is a more general one extending DBF schemes. The software antenna instantly reconfigures itself adapting its software and hardware to changes in the radio-environment. To realize the software antenna, the development of high-speed reconfigurable FPGAs is indispensable. As an intelligent antenna, we believe the software antenna could play a key role in the days of software radio having a function of mobile computing.

Video compression is characterized by the diversity in algorithms, the complexity of computation and the high throughput rate. The requirement of diversity and high performance in video compression brings forward some important goals in designing the VLSI architecture. In this paper, three very important goals are introduced into the design of VLSI architectures for video compression. In the main part of the paper, why each design goal should be considered, what are the problems in achieving each goal and what techniques can be used to achieve each goal are studied.
