This paper develops a learning control algorithm adapting the reference point and force to interact with an object of unknown geometry and elasticity. The controller is inspired by neuroscience studies that investigated the neural mechanisms when human adapt to virtual objects of different properties. The learning control algorithm estimates the shape and stiffness of the given object while maintaining a specified contact force with the environment. Simulations demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithm to identify the geometry and impedance of an unknown object without requiring force sensing. These properties are attractive for robotic haptic exploration with little demand on the sensing.

The defocus blur in catadioptric omni-directional imaging is caused by large apertures and mirror curvatures. This problem becomes more obviously when introducing high resolution sensors. In order to overcome this drawback, this work proposes a simple modification to a conventional catadioptric system that allows for the recovery of an all-focus omni-directional image. The modification is designed by inserting a patterned occluder within the aperture of the camera lens, creating a coded aperture. Then this work introduces a specific deconvolution method, which can recover an all-focus omni-directional image from photograph(s) taken by the camera with coded aperture. Comparing to the conventional aperture, the coded aperture techniques identify the blur scale easier and more accurate. The recovered sharp image eliminates the defocus blur and shows the efficiency of the algorithm. The obtained sharp image can be combined for various catadioptric applications, including omni-directional monitoring systems, intelligent omni-directional systems and robotics, etc.

In this paper we propose new nonparametric Renyi, Tsallis, and L_2 divergence estimators and demonstrate their applicability to mutual information estimation and independent subspace analysis. Given two independent and identically distributed samples, a "naive" divergence estimation approach would simply estimate the underlying densities, and plug these densities into the corresponding integral formulae. In contrast, our estimators avoid the need to consistently estimate these densities, and still they can lead to consistent estimations. Numerical experiments illustrate the efficiency of the algorithms.

Distributed machine learning is becoming increasingly popular for large scale data mining on large scale cluster. To mitigate the interference of straggler machines, recent distributed machine learning systems support flexible model consistency, which allows worker using a local stale model to compute model update without waiting for the newest model, while limiting the asynchronous step in a certain bound to guarantee the algorithm correctness. However, bounded asynchronous computing can not tolerate consistent straggler. We explore that the root cause of this problem derives from the worker driven parallel training mechanism in existing systems. To address the straggler problem fundamentally and fully leverage the asynchronous efficiency, we propose a novel trigger driven parallel training mechanism, where model server proactively triggers to collect updates from workers instead of passively receiving them, which can inherently avoid the coordinating issue among workers. Besides, we devise a dynamic load balancing strategy to make the sampling frequency of each data equal. Furthermore, bounded asynchronous computing is introduced to achieve the algorithm efficiency, as well as the convergence guarantee. Finally, we integrate the above techniques into a distributed machine learning system called Squirrel. Squirrel provides simple programming interface and can easily deploy machine learning algorithms on distributed cluster. In comparison with traditional worker driven parallel training mechanism, trigger driven mechanism can improve up to 4x faster convergence speed of machine learning algorithm.

Frequent subgraph mining is an important research subject of graph mining. At present, there are many effective frequent subgraph mining algorithms, such as gSpan and FFSM. But these algorithms spend a lot of time solving the subgraph isomorphism or graph isomorphism problem, which affects the efficiency of the algorithm itself. According to the problem, we propose a novel frequent subgraph mining algorithm: FSMA, based on the automorphism mapping. The algorithm generate candidate subgraph through extending edges, and the extension location is determined by the automorphism mapping of subgraph. FSMA does not need to test the subgraph isomorphism or graph isomorphism throughout the process of mining frequent subgraph, so it achieves the time complexity of O(n·2~n) (n is the number of frequent edges in graph dataset).

Recovering sparse signals from a few linear measurements is attracting growing attention. Bsides sparsity, the signals usually are nonnegative, nonpositive or restricted in some domain. This paper proposes an algorithm for recovering the sparse signal with some certain property on learning the sparsity. We propose this algorithm by combining the projective method with the iterative hard thresholding strategy. We prove that this algorithm is linear convergent provided the sensing matrix has suitable property. Numerical results demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithm.

This paper proposes a point-based rendering pipeline for indirect illumination for environment lighting. The method improves the efficiency of the algorithm used in the previous studies that calculate direct illumination on all the points in the scene which is prohibitively expensive for environment lighting because it requires a hemispherical integration for each point to compute direct illumination. The proposed rendering pipeline reduces the number of direct illumination computations by introducing approximations and careful selection of points on which indirect illumination is calculated. More specifically, the rendering pipeline first selects primary visible points on which indirect illumination is calculated from the point hierarchy. A micro-buffer is rasterized for each primary visible point to identify secondary visible points whose direct illumination affects indirect illumination of a primary visible point. Dependency of those points is analyzed and approximations are introduced to reduce the number of points on which micro-buffer rasterization is executed to calculate direct illumination. After direct illumination is obtained for those points, direct illumination on all of the primary and secondary visible points is calculated by illumination propagation without rasterizing any micro-buffer. The method can be used for a dynamic scene if it is combined with dynamic point hierarchy update.

We present three tailored algorithms for solving large-scale mixed-integer linear fractional programming (MILFP) problems. The first one combines Branch-and-Bound method with Charnes-Cooper transformation. The other two tailored MILFP solution methods are the parametric algorithm and the reformulation-linearization algorithm. Extensive computational studies are performed to demonstrate the efficiency of these algorithms and to compare them with some general-purpose mixed-integer nonlinear programming methods. A performance profile is given based on the algorithm performance analysis and benchmarking methods. The applications of these algorithms are further illustrated through an application on water supply chain optimization for shale gas production. Computational results show that the parametric algorithm and the reformulation-linearization algorithm have the highest efficiency among all the tested solution methods.

Apriori is a classical association rule algorithm, On the basis of analyzing the Apriori algorithm and some improved algorithms, Using Matlab tool implements an efficient algorithm, the improved algorithm largely reduces the size of candidate sets and improves the mining efficiency. Finally, the improved algorithm is applied in the university curriculum management, which uses students' academic records as data source to mining the hidden curriculum related rules. And other relevant metrics such as lift, all confidence and cosine are introduced to verify the correlation of association rules. These will be significance to provide the significance information for teaching management.
