Context: energy consumption represents an important issue with limited and embedded devices. Such devices, e.g. smartphones, process many images, both to render the UI and for application specific purposes. Goal: we aim to evaluate the energy consumption of different image encoding/decoding algorithms. Method: we run a series of experiments on a ARM based platform, and we collected the energy consumed in performing typical image encoding and decoding tasks. Result: we found that there is a significant difference among codecs in terms of energy consumption. Most of the energy consumption relates to the computational efficiency of the algorithm (i.e. the time performance) though the type of processing and the algorithm may affect the average power usage up to 37%, thus indirectly affecting the energy consumption. Conclusion: JPEG compression is significantly more energy efficient than PNG both for encoding and decoding. Further studies should focus on the additional features that affect energy consumption beyond computational complexity.

Increasing complexity of VISI circuits has led to a progressive need for an efficient test generation method that ensures a fault-free performance of the Circuit-Under-Test. The revocation based genetic algorithm which we suggested before had resulted in higher fault coverage and shorter computational time in comparison with previous test pattern generation systems. In this paper we suggest a new heuristic tree algorithm for test pattern generation which works in combination with the revocation based genetic method. Simulations done on IS CAS'85 benchmarks confirm the efficiency of the algorithm and its significant promotion in comparison with the GAs and other previous test pattern generation methods.

The synchrophasor Standard IEEE C37.118.1, along with its amendment, defines two compliance classes for phasor measurement units (PMUs), the different test signals to be adopted for verification and the limits that should be respected for each test condition. In recent years, many synchrophasor estimation algorithms have been proposed to deal with the operative conditions identified by the standard, that can be both steady state and dynamic. The research has shown that some disturbances, such as interharmonic interfering signals, can seriously degrade synchrophasor measurement accuracy. In this work, a new two-stage approach, relying on Compressive Sensing (CS) and Taylor Fourier Transform (TFT), is proposed to identify the most relevant interfering components in the signal spectrum and to limit their impact on synchrophasor estimation. Simulation results are reported to confirm the algorithm efficiency.

Multi-robot path planning is a challenge for mobile robots in AI. Multi-objective optimized algorithm based on cooperative co-evolution and CGA is brought up in this paper. Shortest path length, minimum time cost, smoothest and limited speed, obstacle-collide free and robot-collide free are the objectives and constraints to optimize. Linear combination of them is designed as evaluation function for CGA with self-adaptive crossover and mutation rate, combined with chaos disturbs. Finally 2D dynamic simulation has proved the efficiency of the algorithm.

The algorithm presented is a very efficient and robust object tracking algorithm based on particle filter. The aim is to deal with noisy and bad resolution video surveillance cameras. The main feature used in this method is multi-candidate object detection results based on a background subtraction algorithm [9] combined with color and interaction features [8]. This algorithm only needs a small number of particles to be accurate. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithm for single and multiple object tracking.

We propose an incremental, highly parallelizable, and constant-time complexity neural learning architecture for multi-class classification (and regression) problems that remains resource-efficient even when the number of input dimensions is very high (>= 1000). This so-called projection-prediction (PRO-PRE) architecture is strongly inspired by biological information processing in that it uses a prototype-based, topologically organized hidden layer that updates hidden layer weights whenever an error occurs. The employed self-organizing map (SOM) learning adapts only the weights of localized neural sub-populations that are similar to the input, which explicitly avoids the catastrophic forgetting effect of MLPs in case new input statistics are presented. The readout layer applies linear regression to hidden layer activities subjected to a transfer function, making the whole system capable of representing strongly non-linear decision boundaries. The resource-efficiency of the algorithm stems from approximating similarity in the input space by proximity in the SOM layer due to the topological SOM projection property. This avoids the storage of inter-cluster distances (quadratic in number of hidden layer elements) or input space covariance matrices (quadratic in input dimensions) as other incremental algorithms typically do. Tests on the popular MNIST handwritten digit benchmark show that the algorithm compares favorably to state-of-the-art results, and parallelizability is demonstrated by analyzing the efficiency of a parallel GPU implementation of the architecture.

Entropic measures such as conditional entropy or mutual information have been used numerous times in pattern mining, for instance to characterize valuable itemsets or approximate functional dependencies. Strangely enough the fundamental problem of designing efficient algorithms to compute entropy of subsets of features (or mutual information of feature subsets relatively to some target feature) has received little attention compared to the analog problem of computing frequency of itemsets. The present article proposes to fill this gap: it introduces a fast and scalable method that computes entropy and mutual information for a large number of feature subsets by adopting the divide and conquer strategy used by FP-growth - one of the most efficient frequent itemset mining algorithm. In order to illustrate its practical interest, the algorithm is then used to solve the recently introduced problem of mining reliable approximate functional dependencies. It finally provides empirical evidences that in the context of non-redundant pattern extraction, the proposed method outperforms existing algorithms for both speed and scalability. There are several methods to control robot's trajectories. The potential fields technique is one of the simplest algorithms that require less computational resources. This work presents a modified version of the potential fields method using variable charge and adapted attractive fields that allows the robot to achieve the goal in dynamical and complex environment which the original approach is not able to solve. The algorithm has been validated using the MobileSim simulator together with Matlab. The results prove the algorithm efficiency in schemes with multiple local minima, goal close to obstacles and less oscillation in narrow passages. This control method can be used in industrial applications such as automatic forklift operation, robotic manipulators and wheeled robots.

Massive amounts of information about news events are published on the Internet every day in online newspapers, blogs, and social network messages. While search engines like Google help retrieve information using keywords, the large volumes of unstructured search results returned by search engines make it hard to track the evolution of an event. A story chain is composed of a set of news articles that reveal hidden relationships among different events. Traditional keyword-based search engines provide limited support for finding story chains. In this paper, we propose a random walk based algorithm to find story chains. When breaking news happens, many media outlets report the same event. We have two pruning mechanisms in the algorithm to automatically exclude redundant articles from the story chain and to ensure efficiency of the algorithm. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm can generate coherent story chains without redundancy.

We present an in-depth computational study of two local search metaheuristics for the classical uncapacitated facility location problem. We investigate four problem instance models, studied for the same problem size, for which the two metaheuristics exhibit intriguing and contrasting behaviours. The metaheuristics explored include a local search (LS) algorithm that chooses the best moves in the current neighbourhood, while a randomised local search (RLS) algorithm chooses the first move that does not lead to a worsening. The experimental results indicate that the right choice between these two algorithms depends heavily on the distribution of coefficients within the problem instance. This is also put further into context by finding optimal or near-optimal solutions using a mixed-integer linear programming problem solver.
