Toward Advocacy-Free evaluation of Packet Classification algorithms

Understanding the real performance of a proposed algorithm is a basic requirement for both algorithm designers and implementers. However, this is sometimes difficult to achieve. Each new algorithm published is evaluated from different perspectives and based on different assumptions. Without a common ground, it is almost impossible to compare different algorithms directly. Choosing an incompetent algorithm for an application can incur significant cost. This is especially true for packet classification in network routers, since packet classification is intrinsically a hard problem and all existing algorithms are based on some heuristics and filter set characteristics. The performance of the packet classification subsystem is critical to the overall performance of the network routers. Although numerous algorithms have been proposed so far, a benchmark that can give them consistent evaluation and reveal their comparable performance is still missing. This paper summarizes our efforts toward improving this situation. First, we conduct a high-level survey on the existing algorithms and extract some insights on the general design ideas. Second, we describe an open-source platform dedicated for advocacy-free evaluation of packet classification algorithms. Many representative algorithms are actually implemented under a set of uniform conditions and assumptions. The freely available implementations allow other researchers to easily test them under different scenarios. We also enforce some consistent and fundamental criteria for the algorithm evaluation, so that their performance and potentials are directly comparable, regardless of the actual implementation platforms. This project serves dual purpose: It helps the researchers to accelerate the innovation in the area of packet classification algorithm development by relieving them from the labor of replicating the previous work and by enabling them to quickly compare and evaluate algorithms. In this paper we introduce an enhanced graph partition model, more robust, used for video sequences temporal segmentation. In the first part we examine the formal framework of the shot boundary detection techniques implemented in the recent years, emphasizing the weakness and strength for each method. In the second phase we present our novel algorithm that applies a scale space median filtering on a min-max objective function that optimize the association within each graph cut in order to remove noise caused by camera movement or large object displacement. The algorithm evaluation is done on a subset of movies from the TRECVID 2001 and 2002 video database which demonstrate the improved performance of our method regardless to the noise gender, with precision and recall rates of average 90% and 86 %, respectively. In the end we conclude the paper and present some further implementation.

algorithm performance evaluation is so entrenched in the machine learning community that one could call it an addiction. Like most addictions, it is harmful and very difficult to give up. It is harmful because it has serious limitations. Yet, we have great faith in practicing it in a ritualistic manner: we follow a fixed set of rules telling us the measure, the data sets and the statistical test to use. When we read a paper, even as reviewers, we are not sufficiently critical of results that follow these rules. Here, we will debate what are the limitations and how to best address them. This article may not cure the addiction but hopefully it will be a good first step along that road.

Computer-assisted analysis of mammogram may provide clues for diagnosis of early tumors. Compared to ordinary images, mammograms feature vagueness and inhomogeneity. Hence, it's of great importance to enhance the contrast of mammograms. This paper introduced traditional algorithms of image enhancement, and presented the region-based and feature-based algorithms for mammograms. In addition, three quantitative evaluations of contrast enhancement proposed by Bovis and Singh at University of Exeter in UK are introduced.

The detection of architectural distortions and abnormal structures in mammographic images can be based on the analysis of bilateral and temporal cases using image registration. This work presents a quantitative evaluation of eight state-of-the art image registration methods applied to mammographic images. These methods range from a global and rigid transformation to local deformable paradigms using various metrics and multi-resolution approaches. The aim of this study is to assess the suitability of these methods for mammographic image analysis. evaluation using temporal cases based on quantitative analysis gives an indication of the accuracy and robustness of the different algorithms. This work shows that local deformable paradigms (B-spline deformations) obtain the most accurate registration results.

Elastography, the imaging technique for estimating the elastic tissue properties, or more specifically elastic modulus imaging, are becoming important diagnosis tools in computer aided diagnosis system, specially focusing on ultrasound and MRI images. This technique still presents unsolved challenges in the analysis of deformations in sequences of images. The aim of this paper is twofold: to evaluate the applicability of the deformation field obtained by state of the art optical flow and image registration algorithms for elastic modulus imaging and to quantitatively evaluate two different methods for estimation of the elastic modulus distribution. Results show that optical-flow methods provide a slightly better reconstruction and that the reconstruction has been shown to be more accurate using the method proposed by Sumi et al.

Research of image processing algorithm is one of the key issues for infrared imager development. Nowadays, researchers of image processing algorithm and designers of infrared imager have presented many image processing algorithms. It is necessary to evaluate the practicability, real-time performance and adaptability of all these algorithms in advance of application. Based on virtual instrumental technology, a general demo and evaluation system for infrared image processing algorithms is developed. The system configuration is described in detail. The extendable property of this system made it suitable for various algorithms demo and evaluation. The vision impression of image processing algorithms demo is processed through labview programming. Designers can evaluate the performance of image processing algorithms in time. This system benefits designers to optimize their algorithms directly. Examples are applied in this system to prove its functions. Trial results show it is a useful tool for infrared imager developer and image processing algorithm designer.

There are various methods for film thickness measurement. This paper aims at thin film measurement methods which work with wavelength-dependent sensor signals, no matter how the signal was captured. These measurement systems are called Thin Film Reflectometers (TFR). The resolution of thin film reflection measurement is limited by the spectral resolution of the detection system, the spectral wavelength range and the analyzing algorithm. Analytical theory of four different algorithms for thin film measurement is described and algorithms are compared via numerical simulations. Most of these algorithms can be found both in the literature and in different software-libraries (e. g. MATLAB, LabVIEW ...) To compare different algorithms, the reflected light intensities of a thin film have been simulated for an exemplary thin glass film and a common off-the-shelf-spectrometer, a broadband visible light source and characteristic noise levels. The same data was fed for four selected algorithms in order to compare the results. To characterize algorithms in resolution, range and accuracy, the standard deviation of the output data has been computed for different spectral windows and resolutions. As a result we can provide a concise recommendation for appropriate use of the presented TFR algorithms.

This paper proposes a new multiparameter method for analysis and selection of motion estimation algorithms for video compression. We present motion estimation algorithms, results of computer simulations and illustrate the analysis with tables, PSNR and performance plots. Numerous algorithms and tests for analysis of algorithm performance for video compression have recently been suggested, which has resulted in a need for effective evaluation methods. A highly qualified expert is also needed to evaluate the test results. The more input parameters used the more complex and subjective the evaluation will be. Our multiparameter method for algorithm analysis and selection eliminates subjectivity and provides a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the tested algorithms for any number of algorithms and parameters. We propose two new methods of evaluation: (1) a quality method-a graphic method using the Pareto approach, and (2) a quantity method which obtains an integrated parameter composed of numerous evaluation parameters. In addition, we evaluate various motion estimation algorithms accordingly to two different implementation strategies: (a) using a software video encoder that depends on available processing resources using a computational complexity-rate-distortion (C-R-D) evaluation framework and (b) using a power-limited video encoder implemented on mobile or handheld computing platform by using energy-rate-distortion (E-R-D) behavior.
