The huge capacity of the coherent optical systems is restricted by fiber nonlinearity. Using digital signal processing algorithms has the opportunity to reduce this limitation. In this work, we investigate the compensation of fiber nonlinearities by digital backpropagation in both Polarization-division-multiplexed 16-level quadrature amplitude modulation system and polarization multiplexed 0.3 return-to-zero quadrature phase-shift keying system. The comparison is done at the same symbol rate. The systems performances are measured in terms of bit error rate, optical signal noise ratio penalty, and the maximum reach. The polarization multiplexed 0.3 return-to-zero quadrature phase-shift keying system performs better by increased sensitivity and the maximum transmission distance.

This work addresses the problem of estimating the accuracy of a certain class of digital signal processing algorithms, known as linear signal transforms, when implemented on field programmable gate array (FPGA) hardware computational structure (HCS) units. A solution is provided through the formulation of a hardware development framework which uses complex multipliers and complex addition units as its basic functional primitives to arrive at an estimation formulation of embedded signal processing operations.

Ground Penetrating RADAR (GPR) is a classical sub-surface analysis tool widely used in civil engineering and environmental investigations. Currently limited to monitoring passive buried dielectric and conductivity interfaces, the instrument is perfectly suited to probe cooperative targets made of piezoelectric substrates designed to convert the incoming electromagnetic wave to an acoustic wave. The surface acoustic wave (SAW) velocity is strongly dependent on the physical environment of the transducer, allowing for sensing such quantities as temperature, stress or the presence of chemical compounds. In order to demonstrate the compatibility of SAW sensors acting as cooperative targets probed by GPR, we investigate the use of widely available commercial SAW filters for sensing purposes. Dedicated software for recording the Mala ProEx GPR signal and digital signal processing algorithms for extracting the physical quantity are demonstrated.

A conventional Electrocardiography (ECG) acquisition system uses contact method which requires the electrodes to be in contact with human skin. This study proposes a non-contact sensing platform that can remotely detect the signals in real time. The current sensing system developed in our research was able to detect the ECG signals with an effective distance of 20cm. digital signal processing algorithms including digital filer, peak identification was developed to decimate the signal noise and compute the period. The heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV), breath frequency can be determined. The performance is compared with conventional ECG system in clinic study. It shows high potential to collect effective information for clinic application.

We motivate the design of our header sequences used for the data-aided algorithms and experimentally demonstrate the use of data-aided digital signal processing for format-flexible coherent reception of different 28-GBd PDM and 4D modulated signals in WDM transmission experiments over up to 7680 km SSMF by using the same resource-efficient digital signal processing algorithms for the equalization of all formats.

Embedded systems became an essential part of the devices that we use in our daily life. Therefore, ability to develop embedded system applications became a sought-after feature. Based on this demand at Istanbul Aydin University we are carrying out Embedded systems course both in theoretical and practical sessions. We are giving the basics of a embedded system structure and they can develop their own applications on an embedded processor. We are using OMAP-L138 experimenter kit for our laboratory sessions. We prepared hands on experiments that starts from a simple Hello World application and carries out to applications consisting digital signal processing algorithms and complex graphical user interfaces. We applied a small survey to our students and commented on the impression that we have during the lab sessions. The students feedback and our impressions matches on the same result showing that our course gives the basic notion and a good introduction to embedded system application development.

The possibility of using residue codes for implementing a dynamic frequency scaling scheme (DFS) in digital System processing architectures with adders and or multipliers in the critical path is explored. Adders and multipliers provide the basic functionality of arithmetic operations in a wide variety of digital signal processing algorithms. Low cost residue codes represent an attractive solution for error detection caused by an unacceptable scaling of the frequency of the DSP. It is assumed that errors appeared during the first cycles required for tuning of the frequency are either recoverable, either tolerable, since they do not impact the overall quality of the results. This strategy adapts the data processor speed to the application requirements leading to a throughput suitable for the demand. The error detection capabilities of a low cost residue checker and the advantages and limitations of their implementation in a dynamic frequency (DFS) scheme are also investigated. The possibility of using a low cost residue checker using as base 2n-1 for n=3 (modulo 7) for detecting the optimal frequency of operation and for detecting errors that appear during a 32-bit addition is analyzed and evaluated.

This paper exposes a number of analog and digital techniques for performance enhancement of Doherty power amplifiers (PAs). After briefly introducing the operation principle of the Doherty PA, the gain and phase impairments between the main and auxiliary amplifiers as well as the problem of power drive waste into the auxiliary branch at the low power mode are analyzed. Due to the dynamic nature of these problems, analog-based approaches cannot completely compensate for them. The digital Doherty PA architecture is then pointed out as the most suitable topology that enables an optimal operation of the Doherty PA. This architecture allows for the implementation of advanced digital signal processing algorithms, such as adaptive input power distribution and dynamic phase alignment that are experimentally proven to bring substantial performance enhancement.
