This paper studies how to determine an optimal order of recovering interdependent Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) after a large scale failure. In such a CPS, some failed devices must be repaired first before others can. In addition, such failed devices require a certain amount of repair resources and may take multiple stages to repair. We consider two scenarios: 1) reserved model where all the required repair resources should be prepared at the beginning of repairing a device;and 2) opportunistic model where we can partially repair a device with only part of the required resources. For each scenario, we model it using an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) and use a relaxation and rounding method to design an ILP based algorithm. In addition, we also design a Dynamic Programming (DP) based algorithm. simulation results show that ILP based algorithm outperforms DP based algorithm by 10%-20% in systems with less than 200 failed devices, but DP based algorithm can support extreme large size systems with more than 5000 failed devices.

Learning activities are increasingly performed in online learning environments. Automatic assessment is used in many systems to give students immediate and personalized feedback allowing them to solve exercises regardless of time and place. However, this creates new challenges for students because they are required to independently regulate their own learning. Because of the lack of direct guidance, it is easy for students to resort to bad study habits. In this paper, we investigate what kinds of harmful study habits can be observed in online learning environments that utilize automatic assessment. We study data from two computer science courses with programming exercises and algorithm simulation exercises. The results are in line with earlier findings that starting to study near the deadline is linked to inferior performance. This is also observed in a within-subject comparison which suggests that the relationship is causal. Furthermore, signs of trial-and-error problem solving are observed in some students and they are also correlated with inferior performance in the exercises and the exam.

A predictive variable gain strategy in iterative learning control (ILC) is introduced. Predictive variable gain iterative learning control is constructed to improve the performance of trajectory tracking. A scheme based on predictive variable gain iterative learning control for eliminating undesirable vibrations of PMSM system is proposed. The basic idea is that undesirable vibrations of PMSM system are eliminated from two aspects of iterative domain and time domain. The predictive method is utilized to determine the learning gain in the ILC algorithm. Compression mapping principle is used to prove the convergence of the algorithm. simulation results demonstrate that the predictive variable gain is superior to constant gain and other variable gains.

In order to apply kaleidoscope patterns into textiles or garments, several methods are studied in this paper. Based on Java language, fractal algorithms, M set algorithm and Julia set algorithm are used to simulate kaleidoscope patterns. The simulation results show that the kaleidoscope patterns programed can be used in textile and clothing. It provides users with more choice.

In this paper, we derive a new improved proportionate normalized least mean square (IPNLMS) algorithm with unconventional minimization criterion that minimizes the summation of each squared Euclidean norm of difference between the currently updated coefficient vector and past coefficient vectors, which is called the improved IPNLMS (I-IPNLMS) algorithm. simulation results demonstrate that the proposed I-IPNLMS algorithm has the superiority of the lower misalignment than the conventional IPNLMS algorithm in the context of sparse system identification with a low signal-noise-ratio (SNR).

This work describes how feed-forward Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) can perform Analog-to-Digital (A/D) conversion with a linear and non-linear relationship between the analog input and the digital output in order to eliminate the linearization stage without modifying the analog-to-digital converter's elements and architecture. Adding to that, the speed of this A/D converter will not be reduced due to the unchanged conversion algorithm. simulation for two types of non-linear input has been performed. The results are discussed and a future work is presented.

Three-dimensional (3D) laser imaging combining compressive sensing (CS) has an advantage in lower power consumption and less imaging sensors;however, it brings enormous stress to subsequent calculation devices. In this paper we proposed a fast 3D imaging reconstruction algorithm to deal with time-slice images sampled by single-pixel detectors. The algorithm implements 3D imaging reconstruction before CS recovery, thus it saves plenty of runtime of CS recovery. Several experiments are conducted to verify the performance of the algorithm. simulation results demonstrated that the proposed algorithm has better performance in terms of efficiency compared to an existing algorithm. This work presents a self-consistent algorithm for the simulation of responsivity and detectivity of InGaAs/GaAs strained multi-period Quantum Well Infrared Photodetectors. This algorithm takes into account the fundamental mechanisms involved in the InGaAs/GaAs detector detection process. We have calculated a practical InGaAs/GaAs detector by using this algorithm. The obtained results were in good agreement with the experiments at low temperature below 3.5 V.

Nowadays, the environments surrounding modern battlefield are becoming increasingly complicated, since the threats are not only from the ground but also from the sky. UAV with reconnaissance mission will take more risk when flying along an improper planned path, so path planning of UAV in complex 3-D environments is very significant and challenging. Aimed at the problem, this paper proposes a novel optimal path planning method for UAV based on the flight space partitioning, Dijkstra algorithm and potential field theory. Specifically, under the cases that the locations of threats are assumed to be known and the whole flight space is partitioned into a number of cells and each cell has a safest node. Then, a 3-D network is formed by connecting the nodes of adjacent cells and a shortest suboptimal path is marked on the network with Dijkstra algorithm. Finally, the optimal path is obtained with artificial potential field method. To verify the proposed algorithm, simulation results in two cases are shown.

Efficient algorithms for the simulation of non-adiabatic electron transfer in complex molecular systems: application to DNA

In this work, a fragment-orbital density functional theory-based method is combined with two different non-adiabatic schemes for the propagation of the electronic degrees of freedom. This allows us to perform unbiased simulations of electron transfer processes in complex media, and the computational scheme is applied to the transfer of a hole in solvated DNA. It turns out that the mean-field approach, where the wave function of the hole is driven into a superposition of adiabatic states, leads to over-delocalization of the hole charge. This problem is avoided using a surface hopping scheme, resulting in a smaller rate of hole transfer. The method is highly efficient due to the on-the-fly computation of the coarse-grained DFT Hamiltonian for the nucleobases, which is coupled to the environment using a QM/MM approach. The computational efficiency and partial parallel character of the methodology make it possible to simulate electron transfer in systems of relevant biochemical size on a nanosecond time scale. Since standard non-polarizable force fields are applied in the molecular-mechanics part of the calculation, a simple scaling scheme was introduced into the electrostatic potential in order to simulate the effect of electronic polarization. It is shown that electronic polarization has an important effect on the features of charge transfer. The methodology is applied to two kinds of DNA sequences, illustrating the features of transfer along a flat energy landscape as well as over an energy barrier. The performance and relative merit of the mean-field scheme and the surface hopping for this application are discussed.
