With the introduction and implementation of the new EU drone regulations over the past years, the quantification of the operation-specific ground risk based on population density maps has been established as a key step in the approval process for drone operations. Currently, census data is used as the main data source for the ground risk assessment. However, census maps are static and of limited spatial resolution. Also, they fail to capture aspects of mobility, commuting patterns, seasonal changes and events. In this work, we propose the use of time-annotated population density maps obtained from mobile devices for planning minimum ground risk trajectories. We outline an end-to-end approach to compute minimum risk trajectories including data processing, planning algorithms and software implementation details. To achieve planning capabilities with response times of only a few seconds on a single CPU core, the planning framework is based on the quasi-random generation of cyclic search graphs also known as probabilistic roadmaps. We present results from a set of example trajectory planning scenarios which indicate the feasibility and usefulness of the algorithmic approach in combination with time-annotated population density maps. Furthermore, we discuss how the presented approach could be used to increase safety of future drone operations.

Real-time implementation of SPV system with DSTATCOM capabilities in three-phase four-wire distribution system

This study deals with a real-time implementation of solar photovoltaic (SPV) grid integrated system possessing distributed static compensator (DSTATCOM) capabilities with three-phase four-wire voltage source converter (VSC) topology using least mean eighth control algorithm. The proposed system has an SPV array, a VSC, three single-phase non-linear loads connected to the grid and a ripple filter. The SPV and VSC together behave as a DSTATCOM and additionally supplies SPV power to the grid. The DSTATCOM reduces the total harmonic distortion of the grid currents, maintains the voltage of point of common coupling and improves the power factor. The maximum extraction of incident solar power on SPV array is achieved through an incremental conductance maximum power point tracking technique. The behaviour of the system is studied by developing a prototype with an SPV array simulator.

modSaRa: a computationally efficient R package for CNV identification

Chromosomal copy number variation (CNV) refers to a polymorphism that a DNA segment presents deletion or duplication in the population. The computational algorithms developed to identify this type of variation are usually of high computational complexity. Here we present a user-friendly R package, modSaRa, designed to perform copy number variants identification. The package is developed based on a change-point based method with optimal computational complexity and desirable accuracy. The current version of modSaRa package is a comprehensive tool with integration of preprocessing steps and main CNV calling steps.

Surface fine structure influence on saturated random packings

Random packings of disks on a mesh are studied numerically using random sequential adsorption algorithm. The mesh is built of straight horizontal and vertical one-dimensional lines of a given distance between them. The packing fraction and structure as well as the kinetics of packing growth dependence on mesh size are analyzed to provide information, whether surface inhomogeneity will affect the properties of random packings. It has been shown that the number of disks in a packing slightly decreases with growing distance between mesh lines while the kinetics may change significantly even for very dense meshes. As packings obtained in random sequential adsorption resemble monolayers produced by irreversible adsorption processes, results of this study show that by measuring properties of a random packing it may be possible to determine fine structure of an underlying surface. In this paper, advanced interval type-2 fuzzy sliding mode control (AIT2FSMC) for robot manipulator is proposed. The proposed AIT2FSMC is a combination of interval type-2 fuzzy system and sliding mode control. For resembling a feedback linearization (FL) control law, interval type-2 fuzzy system is designed. For compensating the approximation error between the FL control law and interval type-2 fuzzy system, sliding mode controller is designed, respectively. The tuning algorithms are derived in the sense of Lyapunov stability theorem. Two-link rigid robot manipulator with nonlinearity is used to test and the simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed method that can control unknown system well.

Identification and Modelling of Translational and Axial Symmetries and their Hierarchical Structures in Building Footprints by Formal Grammars

Buildings and other man-made objects, for many reasons such as economical or aesthetic, are often characterized by their symmetry. The latter predominates in the design of building footprints and building parts such as facades. Thus the identification and modeling of this valuable information facilitates the reconstruction of these buildings and their parts. This article presents a novel approach for the automatic identification and modelling of symmetries and their hierarchical structures in building footprints, providing an important prior for facade and roof reconstruction. The uncertainty of symmetries is explicitly addressed using supervised machine learning methods, in particular Support Vector Machines (SVMs). Unlike classical statistical methods, for SVMs assumptions on the a priori distribution of the data are not required. Both axial and translational symmetries are detected. The quality of the identified major and minor symmetry axes is assessed by a least squares based adjustment. Context-free formal grammar rules are used to model the hierarchical and repetitive structure of the underlying footprints. We present an algorithm which derives grammar rules based on the previously acquired symmetry information and using lexical analysis describing regular patterns and palindrome-like structures. This offers insights into the latent structures of building footprints and therefore describes the associated facade in a relational and compact way.

Comparative Study of Adaptive algorithms for Vehicle Powertrain Noise Control

Active noise control systems have been gaining popularity in the last couple of decades, due to the deficiencies in passive noise abatement techniques. In the future, a novel combination of passive and active noise control techniques may be applied more widely, to better control the interior sound quality of vehicles. In order to maximize the effectiveness of this combined approach, smarter algorithms will be needed for active noise control systems. These algorithms will have to be computationally efficient, with high stability and convergence rates. This will be necessary in order to accurately predict and control the interior noise response of a vehicle. In this study, a critical review of the filtered-x least mean square (FXLMS) algorithm and several other newly proposed algorithms for the active control of vehicle powertrain noise, is performed. The analysis examines the salient features of each algorithm, and compares their system performance. Numerical simulations utilizing synthesized data, are conducted to study the convergence rates of these algorithms. These convergence rates are critical for the noise control outcome. Furthermore, measured powertrain noise response is employed, to verify the system's performance under more realistic conditions. The individual engine orders are targeted for attenuation or enhancement, to achieve the desired vehicle interior sound quality.

SPAWNN: A Toolkit for SPatial Analysis With Self-Organizing Neural Networks

This article introduces the SPAWNN toolkit, an innovative toolkit for spatial analysis with self-organizing neural networks, which is published as free and open-source software (http://***). It extends existing toolkits in three important ways. First, the SPAWNN toolkit distinguishes between self-organizing neural networks and spatial context models with which the networks can be combined to incorporate spatial dependence and provides implementations for both. This distinction maintains modularity and enables a multitude of useful combinations for analyzing spatial data with self-organizing neural networks. Second, SPAWNN interactively links different self-organizing networks and data visualizations in an intuitive manner to facilitate explorative data analysis. Third, it implements cutting-edge clustering algorithms for identifying clusters in the trained networks. Toolkits such as SPAWNN are particularly needed when researchers and practitioners are confronted with large amounts of complex and high-dimensional data. The computational performance of the implemented algorithms is empirically demonstrated using high-dimensional synthetic data sets, while the practical functionality highlighting the distinctive features of the toolkit is illustrated with a case study using socioeconomic data of the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

How Officers Create Guardianship: An Agent-based Model of Policing

Crime is a complex phenomenon, emerging from the interactions of offenders, victims, and their environment, and in particular from the presence or absence of capable guardians. Researchers have historically struggled to understand how police officers create guardianship. This presents a challenge because, in order to understand how to advise the police, researchers must have an understanding of how the current system works. The work presents an agent-based model that simulates the movement of police vehicles, using a record of real calls for service and real levels of police staffing in spatially explicit environments to emulate the demands on the police force. The GPS traces of the simulated officers are compared with real officer movement GPS data in order to assess the quality of the generated movement patterns. The model represents an improvement on existing standards of police simulation, and points the way toward more nuanced understandings of how police officers influence the criminological environment.
