Diversity enhanced particle swarm optimization algorithm and its application in vehicle lightweight design

Particle swarm optimization, a widely used metaheuristic algorithm, mimics the cooperation behavior among species. The PSO algorithm has become a new trend owing to its simplicity and strong optimization capacity. However, premature convergence problem is also a serious issue for PSO comparable with other evolutionary algorithms. Diversity loss is generally known as one of the major causes. For enhancing the diversity of swarms during optimization procedure, an improved PSO algorithm named OLAR-PSO-d is proposed, which incorporates design of experiment technique as well as adaptive reset operator into standard PSO. The OLAR-PSO-d algorithm is compared with other 10 heuristic algorithms. The numerical experiments' results demonstrate the priority of OLAR-PSO-d both in optimization ability and algorithm stability. The proposed algorithm is also used in a vehicle lightweight design problem. The auto-body achieves 20.25 kg weight reduction with meeting all the performance requirements of crashworthiness.

Methods for the minimal-norm bandlimited interpolation of nonuniform samples are known to have serious numerical issues even though this interpolation is mathematically well defined. Moreover, they have been formulated only for finite numbers of samples. By a rigorous revisit of this problem from an operator-theoretic viewpoint in Hilbert spaces, we devise an algorithm for this interpolation that applies to an infinite number of samples with no condition, with guaranteed stability at least for finite numbers of samples, and with a recursive part that can be rigorously implemented in discrete time.

Improvement of Robustness and stability in Estimating Rayleigh-Schuster's Hodograph Parameters Using Different Procedures of Vector Normalization

This paper deals with Rayleigh-Schuster's hodographs, intended for the detailed investigation of changes in the phase of quasiperiodic signals in time series. The hodographs are also known as the phasor-walkout method. A procedure of conditional vector normalization is proposed: it takes into account the vector amplitude for each period under consideration. The procedure considerably improves the robustness and stability of the hodograph approach to changes in the character of the processed data distributions and to various defects in the data. For example, when analyzing the earthquake catalog, the procedure strongly diminishes the influence of the event clustering caused, in particular, by swarms of earthquakes with comparable magnitude and the aftershock sequences of strong earthquakes. At the first stage, we calculate the vector sums (resulting vectors) for each period under investigation throughout the time series duration. For example, investigating diurnal periodicity of earthquakes, we first calculate the resulting vectors for each day of the observation. The further analysis of resulting vectors for each period throughout the time series duration can be performed with different procedures. We compare three procedures for normalization of the obtained resulting vectors, which are as follows: (1) th traditional one, preserving the real signal amplitude;(2) that with reduction of the obtained resulting vectors to the unit vector (phasor);and (3) that with conditional vector normalization, taking into account the amplitude of resulting vectors for each period throughout the time series duration. The third procedure diminishes the possible instability in some special distributions of the investigated data when the resulting vector for a period is close to zero. The procedures are compared using model signals and samples from real earthquake catalogs. All the procedures used give close results when processing random time series.

OWA operator based link prediction ensemble for social network

The objective of link prediction for social network is to estimate the likelihood that a link exists between two nodes. Although there are many local information-based algorithms which have been proposed to handle this essential problem in the social network analysis, the empirical observations show that the stability of local information-based algorithm is usually very low, i.e., the variabilities of local information-based algorithms are high. Thus, motivated by obtaining a stable link predictor with low variance, this paper proposes a kind of ordered weighted averaging (OWA) operator based link prediction ensemble algorithm (LPEOWA) for social network by assigning the aggregation weights for nine local information-based link prediction algorithms with three different OWA operators. The finally experimental results on benchmark social network datasets show that LPEOWA obtains a more stable prediction performance and considerably improves the prediction accuracy which is measured by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) in comparison with nine individual prediction algorithms. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a relatively new global optimization algorithm. Benefitting from its simple concept, fast convergence speed and strong ability of optimization, it has gained much attention in recent years. However, PSO suffers from premature convergence problem because of the quick loss of diversity in solution search. In order to improve the optimization capability of PSO, design of experiment method, which spreads the initial particles across a design domain, and data mining technique, which is used to identify the promising optimization regions, are studied in this research to initialize the particle swarm. From the test results, the modified PSO algorithm initialized by OLHD (Optimal Latin Hypercube Design) technique successfully enhances the efficiency of the basic version but has no obvious advantage compared with other modified PSO algorithms. An extension algorithm, namely OLCPSO (Optimal Latin hypercube design and Classification and Regression tree techniques for improving basic PSO), is developed by consciously distributing more particles into potential optimal regions. The proposed method is tested and validated by benchmark functions in contrast with the basic PSO algorithm and five PSO variants. It is found from the test studies that the OLCPSO algorithm successfully enhances the efficiency of the basic PSO and possesses competitive optimization ability and algorithm stability in contrast to the existing initialization PSO methods.

We study different network utility maximization algorithms that optimize the medium access probabilities at the MAC layer jointly with the end-to-end source rates at the transport layer. The algorithms work in a multihop random access network in a distributed fashion to achieve different types of fairness for the users. Although the algorithms are proven to be mathematically stable, they never have been tested on dynamic network topologies with imperfect transmission links and asynchronous parameter updates. An object-oriented simulation model with modifications to ensure and increase the speed of convergence is proposed. We report on stability tests with different link failure scenarios, topology changes and session rerouting in case of synchronous and asynchronous message updates. The network behavior under different network parameters is discussed. The results show that the modified algorithm converges even under conditions of high link transmission failure rates and can tolerate asynchronous updates of contention probabilities.

Stable adaptive sparse filtering algorithms for estimating multiple-input-multiple-output channels

Channel estimation problem is one of the key technical issues for broadband multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) signal transmission. To estimate the MIMO channel, a standard least mean square (LMS) algorithm was often applied to adaptive channel estimation because of its low complexity and stability. The sparsity of the broadband MIMO channel can be exploited to further improve the estimation performance. This observation motivates us to consider adaptive sparse channel estimation (ASCE) methods using sparse LMS (ASCE-LMS) algorithms. However, conventional ASCE methods have two main drawbacks: (i) sensitivity to random scaling of training signal and (ii) poor estimation performance in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. The former drawback is tackled by proposing novel ASCE-NLMS algorithms. ASCE-NLMS mitigates interference of random scale of training signal and therefore it improves its algorithm stability. It is well-known that stable sparse normalised least-mean fourth (NLMF) algorithms can achieve better estimation performance than sparse NLMS algorithms. Therefore the authors propose an improved ASCE method using sparse NLMF algorithms (ASCE-NLMF) to improve the estimation performance in low SNR regime. Simulation results show that the proposed ASCE methods are shown to achieve better performance than conventional methods, that is, ASCE-LMS by computer simulations. Also, the stability of the proposed methods is confirmed by theoretical analysis.

Model predictive control algorithms for active vibration control: a study on timing, performance and implementation properties

The dynamic properties of vibration control systems pose unique requirements and challenges on the implementation of model predictive control (MPC) algorithms with stability and feasibility guarantees. This article presents a comprehensive experimental comparison of computation timing and damping performance for various MPC methods;analyzing their offline and online properties in active vibration control and their impact on practical implementability. Optimal and suboptimal MPC algorithms providing guaranteed stability and constraint feasibility have been applied to the real-time active vibration attenuation of a lightly damped mechanical test structure. Based on the experiments presented in this paper, the standard and sequential quadratic programming-based, optimal and sub-optimal minimum time multi-parametric programming-based and the sub-optimal Newton-Raphson's algorithm-based MPC methods demonstrate closely comparable vibration attenuation performance. The offline and online timing analysis indicates that the underlying difference between the investigated MPC algorithms lies mainly in practical implementability difficulties caused by inherent algorithm efficiency, rendering certain variants of MPC more suitable for vibration control than others.

Time domain analysis of one-dimensional linear and non-linear composite right/left-handed transmission lines using finite-difference time-domain method

In this study, two finite-difference time-domain algorithms are proposed for time domain analysis of the lossy non-uniform composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH TL). The results of the proposed algorithm are confirmed with those of the ADS commercial software. The numerical stability of the proposed algorithms is studied and a closed form formula for maximum temporal step size that guarantees algorithm stability is extracted. Finally, a new algorithm for time-domain analysis of the non-linear CRLH TLs using finite-difference time-domain is proposed. This algorithm does not impose any limitation on type of non-linearity. The results of the proposed algorithm have a good agreement with the results of the ADS commercial software.
