In the paper, realized simulator for testing parameters estimation of the power system was described. Simulator allows definition of the test conditions like amplitude and phase, activity of decreasing direct component, variation of number of samples, variation of harmonic components, and change of frequency of the basic harmonic. The test criterion takes the error of the estimated value in relation to the default value and then time of convergence of the estimated value. As an illustration of algorithm functioning, the time format of the input signal and the timing response of the estimated amplitude and phase of signals are shown. In the simulator, algorithms for amplitude and phase estimation are implemented. For amplitude estimation, algorithms that were implemented: algorithm based on the Fourier bandwidth filter and algorithm based on the least squares method. For phase estimation, algorithms that were implemented: zero crossing algorithm and algorithm based on the Fourier bandwidth filter. All of the implemented algorithms are described and given with their mathematical models. Simulator was made in Matlab and can be expanded with addition of the noise, implementation of other algorithms, development and testing of new algorithms. For the demonstration of the usability of the simulator, results that were obtained by testing are shown.

This paper studies the testing of the imaging systems and algorithms with the genetic algorithms. We test if there are inherent natural weaknesses in the image processing algorithm or system and can they are search and found with the evolutionary algorithms. In this paper, we test the weaknesses of the error diffusion halftoning methods. We also take a closer look at the method and identify why these weaknesses appear and are relatively easy to identify with synthetic test images. Moreover. we discuss the importance of comprehensive testing before the results with some image processing methods can be trustworthy. The results seem to suggest that the error diffusion methods do not have as apparent inherent problems as e.g. dispersed dot method, but the GA testing does reveal some other problems, like delayed response to the image tone changes. The different error diffusion methods have similar problems, but with different intensity.

Standard test data for estimating peak parameter errors in x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy III. Errors with different curve-fitting approaches

We present results in the final part of a three-part study employing standard test data (STD) to estimate errors in peak parameters derived from data analysis procedures used in x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), The XPS-STD are simulated doublet and singlet XPS spectra based on spline polynomial models of measured C 1s spectra, The XPS-STD contained 10 sets of spectra, each of which consisted of 18 doublets and 4 singlets, The doublet spectra in each set were treated from a factorial design with three factors: peak separation;relative intensity of the component peaks;and fractional Poisson noise. Each of the XPS-STD sets contained the same complement of doublet and singlet spectra and Poisson noise at the same levels;however, the noise distributions were unique in each spectral set. Seven curve-fitting approaches were used by a group of 20 analysts to represent single peaks: a single Gaussian (G), a Gaussian-Lorentzian (G-L), a Voigt function, a G function with an asymmetry term, a G-L function with an asymmetry term and dual G or G-L functions. We statistically analyzed errors in binding energies and intensities by the type of curve-fitting approach using the Kruskal-Wallis test and the Mann-Whitney U-test, Bias was used to measure the accuracy of a curve-fitting approach, whereas random error was used to measure the precision of the approach. Despite the fact that individual peaks were nearly symmetrical, curve-fitting approaches that accounted for peak asymmetry proved to be the most accurate for determining both peak intensities and binding energies. For the doublets exhibiting the larger peak at the higher binding energy, the use of dual G-L functions to fit individual peaks, as a way to account for peak asymmetry, produced the highest accuracy in determining peak binding energy. Polynomial approximation problems represent a class of specially structured problems which are frequently encountered in empirical curve-fitting. Two generators for creating such problems have been developed, implemented and used in the testing of discrete approximation codes. Both generators permit automatic generation of problems with specified characteristics and (for one generator) having known, unique and controllable solutions.

Fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) algorithms for building systems and equipment represent one of the most active areas of research and commercial product development in the buildings industry. However, far more effort has gone into developing these algorithms than into assessing their performance. As a result, considerable uncertainties remain regarding the accuracy and effectiveness of both research-grade FDD algorithms and commercial products a state of affairs that has hindered the broad adoption of FDD tools. This article presents a general, systematic framework for evaluating the performance of FDD algorithms. The article focuses on understanding the possible answers to two key questions: in the context of FDD algorithm evaluation, what defines a fault and what defines an evaluation input sample? The answers to these questions, together with appropriate performance metrics, may be used to fully specify evaluation procedures for FDD algorithms. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Revisiting Facial Age Estimation With New Insights From Instance Space Analysis

When demonstrating the effectiveness of a new algorithm, researchers are traditionally encouraged to compare their algorithm's performance against existing algorithms on well-studied benchmark test suites. In the absence of more nuanced methodologies, algorithm performance is typically summarized on average across the test suite examples. This paper highlights the potential bias of conclusions drawn by analyzing "on average" performance, and the opportunities offered by a recent testing methodology known as instance space analysis. To illustrate, we revisit our 2007 comparative study of algorithms for facial age estimation, and rigorously stress-test to challenge the original conclusions. The case study demonstrates how powerful visualizations offered by instance space analysis enable greater insights into unique strengths and weaknesses, and which algorithm should be used when and why. Inspired by such insights, a new algorithm is proposed, and its unique advantage is demonstrated. The bias often hidden in well-studied datasets, and the ramifications for drawing biased conclusions, are also illustrated in this case study. While focused on facial age estimation, the methodology and lessons learned from the case study are broadly applicable to any study seeking to draw conclusions about algorithm performance based on empirical results.

Simulation of surface electromyogram (EMG) has provided support for the development and testing of algorithms (e.g., for the extraction of amplitude or spectral properties of the EMG or for the estimation of the muscle fiber conduction velocity) and for the interpretation of experimental results. This is the second part of a pair of papers: the first explains the methods for the development of structure based models of surface EMG;this one provides a summary of interesting applications for the interpretation of signals and testing of algorithms. Simulations from some models already introduced in the literature are compared. Moreover, estimation of indexes from an innovative layered volume conductor including a subcutaneous tissue with variable thickness in space is studied. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Assessing text mining algorithm outcomes

There is a surge in the development of decision-oriented analysis tools intended to extract actionable information from text. These tools integrate various text-mining methods that were performance tested in a manner that was often biased toward the new system. Those tests primarily utilised descriptive measurement criteria and test datasets that are inconsistent with most business corpora. We propose and test a user-oriented judgment approach that allows testing under controlled customer-oriented corpora and generates effect size measures. To illustrate the approach, customer relations data was analysed by latent semantic analysis and latent Dirichlet analysis with results evaluated by prospective business analysts. Reporting includes comparisons of results with published literature. While the research centres on the context-region text-mining systems, literature comparisons include word-embedding methods. The analysis concludes that none of the systems reviewed possess a repeatable statistical advantage over the others. Instead, distribution attributes, algorithm configuration, and the evaluation task drive results.

This paper describes a hybrid real-time simulation method for power system studies and an example application of the proposed technique for distribution grid reactive power controller. The platform consists of a Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS), Matlab application and a communication protocol. The RTDS machine is responsible for fast and accurate power system modeling while the Matlab software is used for fast prototyping of a controller. The method was applied to a model that is based on a real distribution grid equipped with a 3.3MWp of photovoltaic generation. A new reactive power control algorithm was designed and tested in a case of a rapid drop of solar insolation. Results prove that the proposed hybrid platform is suitable for power grid control investigations. The real-time tests indicated that the new algorithm can support grid voltage with no negative impact on other grid controllers. The new hybrid method can be applied to other algorithms studies in real-time scenarios.

The laser scanner gives the data which makes possible to localize moving vehicles in the environment. Concept of algorithms and its tests by simulation and using real time data are are main subjects of the paper. Although there are many algorithms in this application huge amount of data and iterative operation requires high computing power. The presentation is concerned on searching a methods to decrease number of iterations necessary to find vehicle position and direction of its body in the reference to surroundings. The scan to scan analysis results in estimation or rotation velocity and angle. This method is proposed as initialization stage of ICP or feature points method. The reduction of the computation time is proved by experiments.
