This paper investigates the visualization of distributed algorithms. We present a conceptual model and a system, VADE, that realizes this model. Since in asynchronous distributed systems there is no way of knowing (let alone, visualizing) the "real" execution, we show how to generate a visualization which is consistent with the execution of the distributed algorithm. We also present the design and implementation of our system. VADE is designed so that the algorithm runs on the server's machines while the visualization is executed on a web page on the client's machine. Programmers can write animations quickly and easily with the assistance of VADE's libraries. End-users can experiment with the animation and change its visual properties. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. The modality effect in multimedia learning suggests that pictures are best accompanied by audio explanations rather than text, but this finding has not been replicated in computing education. We investigate which instructional modality works best as an accompaniment for algorithm visualizations. In a randomized controlled trial, learners were split into three conditions who viewed an instructional video on Dijkstra's algorithm, with diagrams accompanied by audio, text, or both. We find neither a modality effect in favor of the audio condition nor a verbal redundancy effect in favor of using only a single modality rather than both. Taken together with earlier research, our findings suggest that the modality effect is difficult to apply reliably and computing educators should not rush to integrate audio into visualizations in expectation of the effect. We discuss theoretical viewpoints that future research should attend to;these include alternative part-explanations of the modality effect and attention-based models of working memory, among others.

algorithm visualization (AV) uses computer graphics to depict an algorithm's actions. For computer science students, AV holds the promise of helping them understand algorithms more easily and in greater depth. However, after 15 years of intensive research in this area, that promise remains largely unfulfilled. This article argues that we now have a better understanding of what must be done to turn AV from being merely impressive graphics into an effective pedagogical tool for computer science educators. The article provides an overview of what has been learned from past effectiveness studies. This knowledge is then related to an engagement taxonomy defined in a recent working group report on AV effectiveness. The article then describes the JHAVÉ system, which fosters this type of active engagement by providing a set of standard support tools for certain types of AV systems.

algorithm visualization (AV) technology graphically illustrates how algorithms work. Despite the intuitive appeal of the technology, it has failed to catch on in mainstream computer science education. Some have attributed this failure to the mixed results of experimental studies designed to substantiate AV technology's educational effectiveness. However, while several integrative reviews of AV technology have appeared, none has focused specifically on the software's effectiveness by analyzing this body of experimental studies as a whole. In order to better understand the effectiveness of AV technology, we present a systematic meta-study of 24 experimental studies. We pursue two separate analyses: an analysis of independent variables, in which we tie each study to a particular guiding learning theory in an attempt to determine which guiding theory has had the most predictive success;and an analysis of dependent variables, which enables us to determine which measurement techniques have been most sensitive to the learning benefits of AV technology. Our most significant finding is that how students use AV technology has a greater impact on effectiveness than what AV technology shows them. Based on our findings, we formulate an agenda for future research into AV effectiveness. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a new model for an algorithm visualization system. Our model views the visualization system as an integral part of a broader distance learning environment. As such, it supports the heterogeneity of the Internet the visualization is expected to run on and the diversity of the expected users. It does so by defining several ways for handling multi-level visualizations. First, a visualization can run in various abstraction levels of the algorithm, depending on the familiarity of the students with the studied materials. Second, a visualization can use various levels of graphics, depending on the capabilities of the client machines. Third, the messages sent between the machines can be of various levels, depending on the communication loads. Another important aspect of a distance learning environment is collaboration and data sharing. Our model facilitates the collaboration between the students and the instructor and between the students themselves. Finally, this paper presents a system, MAVIS, that realizes the model, and demonstrates its use on several algorithms. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We report on the state of the field of algorithm visualization, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Computer science educators seem to find algorithm and data structure visualizations attractive for their classrooms. Educational research shows that some are effective while many are not. Clearly, then, visualizations are difficult to create and use right. There is little in the way of a supporting community, and many visualizations are downright poor. Topic distribution is heavily skewed towards simple concepts with advanced topics receiving little to no attention. We have cataloged nearly 400 visualizations available on the Internet. We have a wiki-based catalog which includes availability, platform, strengths and weaknesses, responsible personnel and institutions, and other data about each visualization. We have developed extraction and analysis tools to gather statistics about the corpus of visualizations. Based on analysis of this collection, we point out areas where improvements may be realized and suggest techniques for implementing such improvements. We pay particular attention to the free and open source software movement as a model which the visualization community may do well to emulate, from both a software engineering perspective and a community-building standpoint.

We present the algorithm visualization capabilities of the METAL project. Using METAL's graph data which represents highway systems, a selection of interactive algorithm visualizations are performed. Progress of the algorithm is shown by changing the colors of the graph's vertices and/or edges overlaid on Google Maps and in color-coded tabular form, including contents of important data structures. Advantages include the real-world data set and the variety of data sizes available, enhancing student engagement. While many visualizations and visualization tools exist for graph and related algorithms, most focus on small, synthetic graphs. We describe our algorithm visualization capabilities, which include implementations of sequential search, graph traversals, Dijkstra's algorithm, and convex hulls. These can be executed on graphs ranging in size from a few vertices and edges to hundreds. We also present results of a survey of students who have used METAL's algorithm visualizations.

More collaborative use of visualizations is taking place in the classrooms due to the introduction of pair programming and collaborative learning as teaching and learning methods. This introduces new challenges to the visualization tools, and thus, research and theory to support the development of collaborative visualization tools is needed. We present an empirical study in which the learning outcomes of students were compared when students were learning in collaboration and using materials which contained visualizations on different, engagement levels. Results indicate that the level of engagement has an effect on students learning results although the difference is not statistically significant. Especially students without previous knowledge seem to gain more from using visualizations on higher engagement level.

algorithm visualization (AV) can be analyzed and evaluated through three properties: the symbol system, the interactivity, and the didactic structure. While the relationship between various symbol systems have been researched and efforts to increase learner and AV interaction are being made, the importance and potential of the didactic structure of AV is yet to be explored. In view of this deficiency, this paper proposes Categories of algorithm Learning Objective (CALO) as a pedagogical framework for designing and structuring AV. Based on seven non-hierarchical learning objectives commonly found in CS education, CALO provides a conceptual framework for a more learner-centered design, as well as a shared language for educators, learners and designers for communication and evaluation.
