algorithm visualization (AV) can be analyzed and evaluated through three properties: the symbol system, the interactivity, and the didactic structure. While the relationship between various symbol systems have been researched and efforts to increase learner and AV interaction are being made, the importance and potential of the didactic structure of AV is yet to be explored. In view of this deficiency, this paper proposes Categories of algorithm Learning Objective (CALO) as a pedagogical framework for designing and structuring AV. Based on seven non-hierarchical learning objectives commonly found in CS education, CALO provides a conceptual framework for a more learner-centered design, as well as a shared language for educators, learners and designers for communication and evaluation.

A Theory of algorithms course is essential to any Computer Science curriculum at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. It is also considered to be difficult material to teach or to learn. In particular the topics of Computational Complexity Theory, reductions, and the NP-Complete class of problems are considered difficult by students. Numerous algorithm visualizations (AVs) have been developed over the years to portray the dynamic nature of known algorithms commonly taught in undergraduate classes. However, to the best of our knowledge, the instructional material available for NP-Completeness is mostly static and textual, which does little to alleviate the complexity of the topic. Our aim is to improve the pedagogy of NP-Completeness by providing intuitive, interactive, and easy-to-understand visualizations for standard NP Complete problems, reductions, and proofs. In this thesis, we present a set of visualizations that we developed using the OpenDSA framework for certain NP-Complete problems. Our paradigm is a three step process. We first use an AV to illustrate a particular NP-Complete problem. Then we present an exercise to provide a first-hand experience with attempting to solve a problem instance. Finally, we present a visualization of a reduction as a part of the proof for NP-Completeness. Our work has been delivered as a collection of modules in OpenDSA, an interactive eTextbook system developed at Virginia Tech. The tutorial has been introduced as a teaching supplement in both a senior undergraduate and a graduate class. We present an analysis of the system use based on records of online interactions by students who used the tutorial. We also present results from a survey of the students.

We report a study on collaborative learning with algorithm visualizations (AV). We have previously confirmed the hypothesis that students' higher engagement has a positive effect on learning outcomes when they learn collaboratively. Thus, in this paper the analysis is targeted on students' collaborative learning process in order to find phenomena that explain the learning improvements. In the video and audio analysis of the learning sessions, we have identified that the amount of collaboration and discussion increase when the level of engagement increases. Furthermore, the groups that used visualizations on higher level of engagement, discussed the learned topic on different levels of abstraction whereas groups that used visualizations on lower levels of engagement tended to concentrate more on only one aspect of the topic. Therefore, one of our conclusions is that the level of engagement indicates, not only the learning performance, but also the amount of on-topic discussions in collaboration. Furthermore, based on previous literature, we claim that the amount and quality of discussions explain the learning performance differences when students use visualizations in collaboration on different levels of engagement.

algorithm visualizations (AVs) have become a popular teaching aid in classes on algorithms and data structures. The AlgoViz Project attempts to provide an online venue for educators, students, developers,researchers, and other AV users. The Project is comprised of two websites. The first, the AlgoViz Portal, provides two major informational resources: an AV catalog that provides both descriptive and evaluative metadata of indexed visualizations, and an annotated bibliography of research literature. Both resources have over 500 entries and are actively updated by the AV community. The Portal also provides field reports, discussion forums, and other community-building mechanisms. The second website, OpenAlgoViz, is a SourceForge site intended to showcase exemplary AVs, as well as provide logistical and hosting support to AV developers.

The OpenDSA Project seeks to provide complete instructional materials for data structures and algorithms (DSA) courses. Our vision for a highly interactive eTextbook involves the use of many algorithm visualizations (AVs) and a wide range of interactive exercises with automated assessment. To realize this vision we require a mix of third-party and custom software components that make up a client/server-based web application. The massive amount content development required compels us to adopt an appropriate mix of open-source practices that will encourage broad contribution to the project. Educational software systems have an increasingly significant presence in engineering sciences. They aim to improve students' attitudes and knowledge acquisition typically through visual representation and simulation of complex algorithms and mechanisms or hardware systems that are often not available to the educational institutions. This paper presents a novel software system for CryptOgraphic algorithm visuAl representation (COALA), which was developed to support a Data Security course at the School of Electrical Engineering, University of Belgrade. The system allows users to follow the execution of several complex algorithms (DES, AES, RSA, and Diffie-Hellman) on real world examples in a step by step detailed view with the possibility of forward and backward navigation. Benefits of the COALA system for students are observed through the increase of the percentage of students who passed the exam and the average grade on the exams during one school year.

NetLuke is an interactive, Web-based, e-Learning system to visualize the dynamic behavior of algorithms and data structures. It is used as a supportive tool for under-graduate and graduate courses on these topics. It aims for clarity and vividness, simplicity, portability, and extendibility and supports user controlled dynamics. During the design of the system specific focus was laid on the deployment of NetLuke in a mobile environment. Mobile devices force the developer to put considerable effort into interface design and implementation details. Touch based interaction, common for mobile devices today, makes perfect sense for teaching applications, as it supports an intuitive "game-like" interactive approach. Moving to a web based solution opens up new architectural and technological perspectives that support our goal for the development of a modern kind of algorithm visualization platform. Our vision of a user centred, non-monolithic approach is reflected by NetLukes architectural design and its set of features, as easy extensibility and adaptibility. The flexible system design and the choice of latest Web technology support the deployment to the whole range of existing computer platforms, from PCs, tablets to Smartphones.

The effects that technological advances have on education and how these advances can be used to improve the learning process are important research questions that attract many researchers to study different aspects of these issues. One such aspect is the development of interactive e-textbooks. Interactive e-textbooks are defined as electronic books that go beyond the static nature of printed textbooks. In this study, an e-textbook was developed that uses JavaScript for its interactive elements, and employs a concept map for navigational purposes. This e-textbook prototype was tested for the purpose of answering the following research questions. Does an e-textbook improve a student's learning as measured by his/her performance in a test? Does an e-textbook improve a student's learning and performance better than a printed textbook? Do students like interacting with the interface of an e-textbook and does it increase a student's engagement with the course material? Results showed that undergraduate students' performance improved after using the e-textbook. Results also showed that both undergraduate students and graduate students had a positive reaction to the e-textbook.

Google have the largest share of search engines in the world. The essential reason for that is the algorithm called "PageRank" which ranks web pages with great accuracy according to user's intents. However, most of users does not know the detail of the algorithm well enough. Therefore, in this paper, we try to visualize the behavior of the algorithm by using a multi-agent simulator called Artisoc in order to help learners to understand the algorithm. Moreover, 18 students in our university are asked in a questionnaire how they feel about the algorithm visualization, and we report the result of the questionnaire.
