This paper presents the design and performance analysis of an analog network coding (ANC) scheme for multi-user multi-carrier differential chaos shift keying (MC-DCSK) modulation. The incentives to employ the MC-DCSK system are to achieve a better spectral efficiency and more efficient energy consumption compared to that of a conventional DCSK system. The proposed scheme considers a network comprising L user nodes (L >= 2) and a single relay node R. In this scheme, called the ANC-based two-way relay system, all users transmit their signals to the relay in the first time slot, and the relay forwards the superposition of the received signals each of the user nodes in the second time slot. At the receiver end, each user mitigates the overall interference by subtracting its own data signal from the received combined signal and then starts the decoding process. The system design is analytically studied, and the corresponding theoretical bit error rate expression for the multipath fading channel is derived. Additionally, the conventional ANC-DCSK scheme is analyzed and compared to the proposed ANC-based MC-DCSK scheme to show the improvement in the performance of our approach. Finally, to validate the accuracy of the methodology, the simulation results are compared to the related theoretical expressions.

In this paper, we consider analog network coding (ANC) in the Multiple Access Relay Channel (MARC) with multiple relays, and provide the following three-fold contribution: 1) we introduce a tractable mathematical framework for computing the Symbol Error Rate (SER) of Maximum-Likelihood (ML), Zero-Forcing (ZF), and Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) receivers;2) by capitalizing on this tractable mathematical framework, we formulate a power allocation problem that is proved to be convex for ML, ZF and MMSE receivers;and 3) we provide closed-form expressions of the optimal power to be allocated to the sources and the relays for ZF and MMSE receivers. With the aid of Monte Carlo simulations, we validate the accuracy of the proposed mathematical framework for various network topologies and channel conditions, as well as study the effectiveness of optimal power allocation. It is shown, in particular, that power optimization is beneficial as the number of sources increases and if the quality of the source-relay links is better than the quality of the relay-destination links.

The applicability of analog network coding (ANC) to a wireless network is constrained by several limitations: 1) some ANC schemes demand fine-grained frame-level synchronization, which cannot be practically achieved in a wireless network;2) others support only a specific type of modulation or require equal frame size in concurrent transmissions. In this paper, a new ANC scheme, called restriction-free analog network coding (RANC), is developed to eliminate the above limitations. It incorporates several function blocks, including frame boundary detection, joint channel estimation, waveform recovery, circular channel estimation, and frequency offset estimation, to support random concurrent transmissions with arbitrary frame sizes in a wireless network with various linear modulation schemes. To demonstrate the distinguished features of RANC, two network applications are studied. In the first application, RANC is applied to support a new relaying scheme called multi-way relaying, which significantly improves the spectrum efficiency as compared to two-way relaying. In the second application, RANC enables random-access-based ANC in an ad hoc network where flow compensation can be gracefully exploited to further improve the throughput performance. RANC and its network applications are implemented and evaluated on universal software radio peripheral (USRP) software radio platforms. Extensive experiments confirm that all function blocks of RANC work effectively without being constrained by the above limitations. The overall performance of RANC is shown to approach the ideal case of interference-free communications. The results of experiments in a real network setup demonstrate that RANC significantly outperforms existing ANC schemes and achieves constraint-free ANC in wireless networks.

A simple relay selection scheme is proposed for analog network coding using differential modulation (ANC-DM). We propose a relay selection scheme based solely on the received signal power in which their own information is canceled out at each source node. The proposed power-based relay selection scheme is further applied to analog network coding using double-differential modulation (ANC-DDM), which is suitable for channels with carrier offset. Simulation results show that our proposed simple power-based criterion for relay selection in ANC-DM system has little loss compared to the optimal relay selection scheme using ideal BER. In a communication scenario with two transceivers (TRXs) and one relay, four time slots are required to communicate one packet in each direction if the relay uses a store-and-forward technique. With digital network coding (NC) three time slots are needed, and if analog netwok coding (ANC) is used, only two time slots are necessary. Communication systems with a low transmission rate such as molecular communication (MC) systems can especially benefit from the traffic reduction of ANC. The available literature only considers theoretical studies on the application of NC in MC nanonetworks. In this paper, we present for the first time a macroscale MC testbed for ANC to fill the gap between theory and practice. By using our testbed, we demonstrate the influence of time synchronization on the bit error ratio (BER) performance of the network coded MC system. We also study the influence of the bit sequence length on the error ratio of the system. Furthermore, we implemented duplex NC and demonstrated that the error ratios of half duplex and full duplex NC are close, but full duplex NC results in a time gain of up to (n - 1) time slots for a bit sequence length n.

In a recent paper [4], Maric et al. analyzed the performance of the analog network coding (ANC) in a layered relay network for the high-SNR regime. They have proved that under the ANC scheme, if each relay transmits the received signals at the upper bound of the power constraint, the transmission rate will approach the network capacity. In this paper, we consider a more general scenario defined as the generalized high-SNR regime, where the relays at layer l in a layered relay network with L layers do not satisfy the high-SNR conditions, and then determine an ANC relay scheme in such network. By relating the received SNR at the nodes with the propagated noise, we derive the rate achievable by the ANC scheme proposed in this paper. The result shows that the achievable ANC rate approaches the upper bound of the ANC capacity as the received powers at relays in high SNR increase. A comparison of the two ANC schemes implies that the scheme proposed in [4] may not always be the optimal one in the generalized high-SNR regime. The result also demonstrates that the upper and lower bounds of the ANC rate coincide in the limit as the number of relays at layer L-1 dissatisfying the high-SNR conditions tends to infinity (to be infinite), yielding an asymptotic capacity result.

In this paper we formulate network coding (NC) and analog network coding (ANC) using analytical models to quantify ANC performance parameters. For this reason, a chain topology in a non-mutual transmission was investigated. Our formulations demonstrate the benefit of NC and ANC over traditional approaches which depend on the number of transmission packets and the number of timeslots required for packets transmission in broadcasting scenarios. The advantage of this analytical approach is independence with respect to running a network simulation in order to evaluate the effect of the network coding schemes on the networks before proceeding to design or system simulation. The result shows ANC can improve capacity in the chain network as much as 50%.

Outage-optimal opportunistic scheduling with analog network coding in multiuser two-way relay networks

This paper investigates the performance of an outage-optimal opportunistic scheduling scheme for a multiuser two-way relay network, wherein an analog network coding-based relay serves multiple pairs of users. Under a Rayleigh flat-fading environment, we derive an exact expression for cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the minimum of the two end-to-end instantaneous signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and utilize this to obtain an exact expression for the outage probability of such a greedy scheduling scheme. We then develop a modified scheduler that ensures fairness among user pairs of the considered system. By using a high SNR approximation of derived CDF, we present a simple closed-form expression for outage probability of the overall system and establish that a multiuser diversity of order equal to the number of user pairs is harnessed by the scheme. We also present an efficient power allocation strategy between sources and relay, subject to a total power constraint, that minimizes the outage probability of the overall system. Further, by deriving both upper and lower bound expressions for the average sum-rate of the proposed scheme, we demonstrate that an average sum-rate gain can also be achieved by increasing the number of user pairs in the system. Numerical and simulation results are presented to validate the performance of the proposed scheme.

A novel bidirectional half-duplex fronthaul system using MMW/RoF and analog network coding

A novel bidirectional half-duplex fiber-wireless fronthaul system is proposed in this paper. Bidirectional relaying transmission is deployed in both optical fiber and wireless link thanks to millimeter-wave radio over fiber (MMW/RoF) and analog network coding (ANC) techniques. The architecture of the proposed fronthaul system is simplified significantly since it requires only an optical fiber with a single wavelength and a wireless link with a single MMW frequency. The detailed architectures of the subsystems such as the central station, the remote antenna unit, and the remote radio head are also designed. Mathematical expressions for the performance analysis of the proposed fronthaul system are derived considering the effects of various physical layer impairments. The numerical results demonstrate not only the feasibility of our proposed system but also the gain in terms of throughput of ANC-based relaying compared to conventional and digital network coding (DNC)-based relaying. Pragmatic analog network coding with Relay Selection for OFDM-Based Multirelay networks

We consider two-way relay (TWR) networks consisting of two communicating nodes and multiple relays built upon orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing signaling. For low-cost implementation of relays, two pragmatic TWR protocols are proposed based on analog network coding (ANC). The proposed two-phase (2P)-and three-phase (3P)-ANC schemes employ time-domain instantaneous power scaling and relay selection to improve the outage performance without equipping discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and inverse DFT functions at the relay. In particular, we devise a relay power allocation factor and a resultant relay selection metric for the proposed 3P-ANC scheme, which can be implemented at low complexity. For the proposed schemes, the outage probability and achievable diversity order are also analyzed, which reveals a larger diversity order of the 3P-ANC scheme than the 2P-ANC scheme. The results from analysis and simulation show that the proposed schemes outperform the conventional 2P-ANC schemes employing time-domain average power scaling and distributed space-time block coding or frequency-domain power scaling and relay selection.
