For two-way relaying assisted by analog network coding, most investigation so far is based on perfect synchronization assumption. In contrast, in this paper we consider the more practical asynchronism assumption, and develop a new OFDM transmission scheme that is robust to the lack of synchronization in both timing and carrier frequency. In our scheme, the relays' signals are constructed by fusing several OFDM symbols received from the source nodes transmissions. The source node receivers can successfully demodulate the received OFDM signals after mitigating effectively multiple carrier frequency offsets and multiple timing phase offsets. Simulations are conducted to demonstrate its superior performance. This scheme has the same bandwidth efficiency as the conventional OFDM transmission, and can achieve the same relaying gain as the existing multiple relay transmissions. By relieving the stringent synchronization requirement, this scheme leads to simplified relay design, which makes it more practical to exploit multiple relays in two-way relaying networks.

network coding is a paradigm for modern communication networks by allowing intermediate nodes to mix messages received from multiple sources. Recently, space-time analog network coding (STANC) has been proposed for non-regenerative multi-way relaying, where multiple nodes are exchanging information through the multi-antenna relay without direct links. In this paper, we investigate STANC in multiple-access relay channels, where multiple nodes communicate to a common destination through a multi-antenna relay with direct links. We discuss several different possible schemes including STANC with Alamouti scheme under three time slots constraints and compare the sum rate and error rate performance.

In this paper, we develop efficient power allocation schemes for bidirectional relaying when analog network coding is used. As compared to unidirectional relaying, analog network coding based bidirectional relaying reduces number of transmissions in the network and increases overall system rate. First, we study optimal power allocation for a three node network where only one relay node is used. Then we propose an efficient power allocation strategy for a general cooperative network architecture where multiple relays are employed to assist the user nodes. Results show significant performance improvement in terms of overall system rate, with increase in the number of relays in the network.

A physical-layer security enhancement scheme in analog network coding systems based on artificial noise is proposed in this paper. In broadcast phase, the Relay node selects part of antennas from its total antennas as the received reference signal, and derives the beamforming matrix and artificial noise vector from the equivalent channel fading matrix. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms classical beamforming scheme. Compared with beamforming scheme, the proposed scheme shows about 2.5dB gain in ergodic secrecy capacity when antenna number of Relay is three, and 3dB gain when the antenna number is six. Specifically, the combined selection criterion has the similar curve compared with the one-direction criterion, in which the Relay node needs antenna selection only on Alice direction.

In this paper, we propose to improve a Cooperative Automatic Repeat reQuest (C-ARQ) scheme through the optimization of the distribution of the average relay energy cost in a two sources one destination wireless system. We consider a BPSK modulated transmission over Rayleigh fading channels. We propose to use specific relay and destination treatment for different possible cases: both received packets are error free, only one received packet is detected erroneous or both received packets are detected erroneous at the destination. We derive semi-analytical bounds of the throughput and the average relay energy. We find the optimal relay energy distribution which maximizes the throughput by using dichotomy search. Numerical results confirm the accuracy of the derived closed form expressions and show the throughput improvement due to the relay energy optimization compared to the conventional cooperative ARQ scheme.

The multiple access broadcast (MABC) is an effective two phases transmission (2P) ANC protocol for the half-duplex (HD) communication mode. However, MABC does not make use of channel gain of the direct link (DL) no matter how strong it is. On the other hand, the time division broadcast (TDBC) is known as a three phases transmission (3P) protocol which enables transceivers to utilize DL and thus offers the possibility to achieve higher performance compared with the MABC at the expense of a reduced spectral efficiency due to the one extra transmission phase. In this paper, we investigate a joint single relay selection (SRS) and power allocation schemes for energy-efficient wireless communication systems with analog network coding (ANC) for TDBC, where two-way relay channel with two end nodes and N parallel relay nodes is considered under an assumption of perfect channel-state information (CSI). Our objective is to minimize the total system transmit power consumption under quality-of-service (QoS) constraints for TDBC protocol with joint single relay selection and nodes power allocation. In addition, a zero-forcing based relay signal combining technique that combines the signals received at the 1st and 2nd transmission phases, also known as zero-forcing relay power allocation (ZF-RPA), is investigated. Numerical simulation shows that the traditional variable gain relay power allocation (VG-RPA) is more energy-efficient than the ZF-RPA scheme for TDBC in cases with and without utilizing DL.

network coding is an emerging technique of packet forwarding that encodes the packets at a relay node in the network layer. analog network coding (ANC) encodes the packets by superposing signals at the physical layer, which can further bring throughput improvements. While most previous literatures assume either channel parameters are pre-established or perfect global channel state information (CSI) can be obtained by the relay node, which is unrealistic for a wireless network. In this paper, we propose a scheme to estimate channel gains based on outage probability by varying the sampling window in a multi-user two-way relay network, and present a sum rate optimization opportunistic scheduling scheme as an application of the channel estimation scheme. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of our estimation scheme, and the proposed scheduling scheme outperforms the conventional round robin scheduling scheme significantly.

The Modulation Scheme with Unknown CSI for analog network coding in Multi-Antenna Relay Channel

analog network coding (ANC) is a hot topic in recent pioneer researches. Two end-sources can exchange information with the help of a relay by making use of the additive nature of electro-magnetic waves in the wireless two-way relay channel (TWRC). The relay amplify and forward the XORed signal to both of the two sources. In this paper, we assume that each source is equipped with a single antenna and the relay is equipped with multiple antennas. Neither the sources nor the relay can acquire the channel state information (CSI). We propose a novel modulation scheme based on differential modulation. The receivers in TWRC can eliminate the self-interference when their transmitting signals are independent. Then we derive the maximum likelihood (ML) detector for the ANC system with differential modulation signal. We compare the system bit error rate (BER) performance with coherent detection and perfect CSI. Theoretical and simulated results show that even without the aid of CSI, the performance of the proposed system is approximately 1-2 dB away from the optimal coherent detection scheme.

In this paper, we propose a joint transmit/receive frequency-domain equalization (FDE) based on minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion for multi-input multi-output (MEMO) analog network coding (ANC) in single-carrier (SC) bidirectional relay communications. In the proposed scheme, the relay station (RS) equipped with multiple antennas carries out antenna diversity and one-tap transmit FDE, and the base station (BS) and mobile terminal (MT) receivers, both equipped with single antenna, carry out one-tap receive FDE only. The FDE weights at RS, BS and MT are jointly optimized so as to minimize the end-to-end mean square error (MSE). We evaluate, by computer simulations, the bit error rate (BER) performance when using the proposed scheme, and discuss how the transmit FDE at RS operates and affects the BER performance.
