Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication is expected to he a key technology for SC networks, because it can provide high data rates and large available bandwidth. Large antenna array is necessary to be applied to mmWave system to overcome the high path loss. Restricted by power consumption and system complexity, traditional digital precoding cannot be used for mmWave system. Therefore, analog radio frequency signal processing is introduced to simplify the architecture of precoder. In this paper, we propose dominant vector approaching (DVA) searching method for analog precoder design. Assuming that the channel state information is known at both transmitter and receiver sides, we decompose the analog precoding problem into a series of subproblems. For each subproblem, we just need to optimize one column of analog precoding matrix. Then, we can apply DVA searching method to solve these subproblems under unit modulus constraint. For the fully-connected structure (FS) and the partially-connected structure (PS), we propose DVA-FS and DVA-PS as our precoding designs, respectively. In addition, we prove that DVA searching method finds the near-optimal solutions for the nonconvex subproblems. Through simulation, we show that DVA algorithms achieve near optimal performance with analog precoder in different scenarios. Besides, we investigate the effect of quantization and the energy efficiency of DVA algorithms, and find that they perform well with rough quantization.

A New Class of analog precoding for Multi-Antenna Multi-User Communications Over High-Frequency Bands

A network relying on a large antenna-array-aided base station is designed for delivering multiple information streams to multi-antenna users over high-frequency bands such as the millimeter-wave and sub-Terahertz bands. The state-of-the-art analog precoder (AP) dissipates excessive circuit power due to its reliance on a large number of phase shifters. To mitigate the power consumption, we propose a novel AP relying on a controlled number of phase shifters. Within this new AP framework, we design a hybrid precoder (HP) for maximizing the users' minimum throughput, which poses a computationally challenging problem of large-scale, nonsmooth mixed discrete-continuous log-determinant optimization. To tackle this challenge, we develop an algorithm which iterates through solving convex problems to generate a sequence of HPs that converges to the max-min solution. We also introduce a new framework of smooth optimization termed soft max-min throughput optimization. Additionally, we develop another algorithm, which iterates by evaluating closed-form expressions to generate a sequence of HPs that converges to the soft max-min solution. Simulation results reveal that the HP soft max-min solution approaches the Pareto-optimal solution constructed for simultaneously optimizing both the minimum throughput and sum-throughput. Explicitly, it achieves a minimum throughput similar to directly maximizing the users' minimum throughput and it also attains a sum-throughput similar to directly maximizing the sum-throughput.

Spectral-Efficient analog precoding for Generalized Spatial Modulation Aided Mm Wave MIMO

Generalized spatial modulation (GenSM) aided millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) has recently received substantial academic attention. However, due to the insufficient exploitation of the transmitter's knowledge of the channel state information, the achievable rates of state-of-the-art GenSM-aided mmWave MIMO systems are far from being optimal. Against this background, a novel analog precoding scheme is proposed in this paper to improve the spectral efficiency (SE) of conventional GenSM-aided mmWave MIMOs. More specifically, we firstly manage to lower-bound the achievable SE of GenSM-aided mmWave MIMO with a closed-form expression. Second, by exploiting this lower bound as a cost function, a low-complexity iterative algorithm is proposed to design the analog precoder for SE maximization. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to substantiate the superior performance of the proposed design with respect to state-of-the-artGenSM-aided mmWave MIMO schemes.

In this letter, we study the performance of a downlink multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with sub-connected structure over limited feedback channels. Tight rate approximations are theoretically analyzed for the system with pure analog precoding and hybrid precoding. The effect of quantized analog and digital precoding is characterized in the derived expressions. Furthermore, it is revealed that the pure analog precoding outperforms the hybrid precoding using maximal-ratio transmission (MRT) or zero forcing (ZF) under certain conditions, and we theoretically characterize the conditions in closed form with respect to signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the number of users and the number of feedback bits. Numerical results verify the derived conclusions on both Rayleigh channels and mmWave channels.

This paper proposes a hybrid precoding technique based on multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system to improve bit error rate (BER) performance in hybrid beamforming system. The conventional hybrid beamforming system cannot outperform the performance of full-digital beamforming system in OFDM. In the proposed algorithm, the analog precoding matrices are designed by iterative algorithm and one proper analog precoding matrix with the highest power of hybrid precoder is selected to achieve the highest performance. According to the number of analog precoding matrices, the diversity gain is increased and the performance is improved. The simulation results show that the BER performance and average sum rate for the proposed scheme are higher than the conventional hybrid beamforming system.

On the Quantization of Phase Shifters for Hybrid precoding Systems

Hybrid precoding that combines analog RF processing and digital baseband processing has been shown to be a promising technique for transceivers with limited number of RF chains. The RF processing, due to power and complexity issue, is typically done by using phase shifters. A recent study shows that hybrid precoding is no loss of generality if each coefficient of the analog precoder is implemented by using two phase shifters. In this paper, we consider two possible implementation structures that use Two pHase shIfters for each Coefficient (THIC). These two structures, having the same performance when the phases can take on continuum values, behave differently upon quantization, as the analysis shows. For a small number of quantization bits, the precoder implemented using THIC is a good approximation of the unquantized one. With 3-bit phase shifters, the performance is close to that of the unquantized system in multiuser communications, where the performance is more sensitive to quantization errors. While the analysis in this paper is done assuming high-resolution quantization, simulations show that the result is accurate even for coarse quantization.

analog precoder was introduced recently to millimeter wave (mmWave) systems with large-scale antenna arrays as a promising hardware-efficient transceiver architecture. In practice, low-resolution phase shifters (PSs) are generally adopted to achieve low hardware cost and low power consumption, which, however, makes fine beam tuning challenging. Recent achievements in antenna selection technology motivate us to exploit the augmented antenna diversity of a large-scale antenna array to compensate the accuracy loss caused by this low-resolution PS implementation. In this correspondence, we consider a narrow-band multiple-input single-output downlink mmWave system. Our goal is to jointly select a set of transmit antennas and design the analog precoder with constant amplitude and discrete phase constraints to maximize the spectral efficiency. In particular, we propose a novel joint antenna selection and analog beamformer design algorithm, which can provide satisfactory performance with low complexity. Simulation results demonstrate the advances of the proposed algorithm compared with the low-resolution analog precoding schemes without antenna selection.

A Spatial Modulation With Space-Phase Constellation for Spatially Correlated Channels

We design a spatial modulation (SM) scheme for spatially correlated channels under the constraints of a single radio frequency chain transmitter and open-loop transmission. To alleviate the performance degradation of the conventional SM in highly correlated channels, the proposed SM scheme adopts the antenna grouping and a new space-phase constellation, which is designed by considering the phase-only constraint and received symbol distance in fully correlated channels. In the simulation results, the proposed scheme achieves about 2.5-dB gain at bit error rate of 10(-3) compared with the conventional SM in highly correlated channels.

In Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems, the hybrid beamforming (BF) has been put forward to reduce the high implementation cost and energy consumption resulted from the tremendous requirements of dedicated Radio Frequency (RF) chains. This paper aims at to design hybrid analog and digital precoders (combiners) for sub-connected and fully connected structures. In order to minimize the Euclidean distance between the optimal precoding matrix and products of analog and digital precoding matrices, an alternating optimization algorithm and a method for maximizing signal power are exploited. Then, based on Linear Minimum Mean Square Error (LMMSE) combiner, the same method is introduced to find the hybrid combiner. Simulation results demonstrate the proposed optimization algorithm 1 has a fast convergence rate, and the proposed hybrid BF method for sub-connected structure outperforms the case for fully connected structure.
