System Identification algorithm analysis of Acupuncture Effect on Mean Blood Flux of Contralateral Hegu Acupoint

Background. Acupoints (belonging to 12 meridians) which have the same names are symmetrically distributed on the body. It has been proved that acupoints have certain biological specificities different from the normal parts of the body. However, there is little evidence that acupoints which have the same name and are located bilaterally and symmetrically have lateralized specificity. Thus, researching the lateralized specificity and the relationship between left-side and right-side acupuncture is of special importance. Methodology and Principal Findings. The mean blood flux (MBF) in both Hegu acupoints was measured by Moor full-field laser perfusion imager. With the method of system identification algorithm, the output distribution in different groups was acquired, based on different acupoint stimulation and standard signal input. It is demonstrated that after stimulation of the right Hegu acupoint by needle, the output value of MBF in contralateral Hegu acupoint was strongly amplified, while after acupuncturing the left Hegu acupoint, the output value of MBF in either side Hegu acupoint was amplified moderately. Conclusions and Significance. This paper indicates that the Hegu acupoint has lateralized specificity. After stimulating the ipsilateral Hegu acupoint, symmetry breaking will be produced in contrast to contralateral Hegu acupoint stimulation.

Independent component analysis algorithms for spectral decomposition in UV/VIS analysis of metal-containing mixtures including multimineral food supplements and platinum concentrates

Various independent component analysis (ICA) algorithms (MILCA, JADE, SIMPLISMA, RADICAL) are applied for simultaneous spectroscopic determination of two groups of transition metals: Co(II)-Fe(III)Cu(II)-Zn(II)-Ni(II) and Pt(IV)-Pd(II)-Ir(IV)-Rh(III)-Ru(III)) in complex mixtures. The analysis is based on the decomposition of spectra of multicomponent mixtures in the UV-VIS region based on the natural absorbance of metal salts, or, when a better sensitivity is desirable, based on the absorbance of their complexes with 4-(2-pyridylazo) resorcinol (PAR) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Good quality spectral resolution of up to seven-component mixtures was achieved (correlation coefficients between resolved and experimental spectra are not less than 0.90). In general, the relative errors in the recovered concentrations are at levels of only several percent. While being superior to other ICA algorithms, MILCA is comparable or even outperforms other classical chemometric methods for quantitative analysis that were used for comparison purposes (Partial Least Squares (PLS), Principal Component Regression (PCR), Alternating Least Squares (ALS)). Simultaneous quantitative analysis is possible for mixtures containing up to five metals in the broad concentration ranges even when individual spectra show 99% overlap. A small excess of derivatization reagent (till threefold excess to the sum of metal concentrations) is optimal to obtain good quantitative results. The proposed method was used for analysis of authentic samples (multimineral supplements and platinum concentrates). The resolved ICA concentrations match well with the labelled amounts and the results of other chemometric methods (ALS, PLS). ICA decomposition considerably improves the application range of spectroscopy for metal quantification in mixtures.

This paper proposes new methods for analyzing image sequences and updating textures of the three-dimensional (3-D) facial model. The paper also describes a method for synthesizing various facial expressions. These three methods are the key technologies for the model-based image coding system. The input image analysis technique directly and robustly estimates the 3-D head motions and the facial expressions without two-dimensional (2-D) any entity correspondences. This technique resolves the 2-D correspondence mismatch errors and provides quality reproduction of the original images by fully incorporating the synthesis rules. To verify analysis algorithm, the paper performs quantitative and subjective evaluations. The paper presents two methods for updating the texture of the facial model to improve the quality of the synthesized images. The first method focuses on the facial parts with large change of the brightness according to the various facial expressions for saving of the transmission bit rates. On the other hand, the second method focuses on all changes of brightness caused by the 3-D head motions as well as the facial expressions. The transmission bit rates are estimated according to the update methods. For synthesizing the output images, the paper describes rules that simulate the facial muscular actions because the muscles cause the facial expressions. These rules more easily synthesize the high-quality facial images that represent the various facial expressions. Now, the 34 rules for the muscular actions have been developed.

Fuzzy stochastic Petri nets and analysis of the reliability of multi-state systems

Commonly used software may be inadequate for analysing multi-state systems because of their increasing complexity. Here, a general method of analysing the reliability of systems using fuzzy stochastic Petri nets (FSPNs) based on the fuzzy parameters of FSPNs is proposed. First, the authors' present the degree of importance and node-to-node system dependence definitions and access rules and classify the state space using the weighted state norm. Second, using the firing rule of the FSPNs and the concept of hierarchical sub-nodes, the authors' propose an algorithm for the analysis of adaptive FSPNs and their reliability. An adaptive simulation system based on FSPNs is also proposed. Estimates are applied to the adaptive simulation system, rendering the multi-state system more reliable and enabling the use of a structured cooperative communication network of users to request services. The results of the case study demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach.

Efficient analysis of a complete feeding system in corrugated circular waveguide

This work presents an efficient algorithm for the analysis of a typical complete feeding system. Several different methods have been adopted, in conformance with their specific advantages, to analyze part of the structure. Mode-matching has been used to analyze the corrugated waveguide, a Generalized admittance matrix approach has been used to analyze the mode launchers and an integral equation technique was used to compute the field radiated by the feed. Comparisons are shown with results by the Finite Elements analysis (FEM).

For shape analysis in 3-D, probably skeletonization will become a momentous tool for analyzing the different shapes in 3-D, as similar to the 2-D. This paper discusses about topology preserving 3-D skeletonization sequential algorithm which computes curve skeletons for the given solid object. The original geometry of the given object will be well-preserved by curve skeleton. In the proposed algorithm, each voxel of the three-dimensional image is classified as two classes: boundary, corner. The object is scanned with the use of a structuring element, border and corner voxels are classified based on the certain condition proposed in this paper. This algorithm does not require any computations which are complex, large number of windows which make implementation a complex. The proposed algorithm is various 3-D simulated images and resulting skeletons are found to satisfactory. The 3-D simulated images and its skeletons are viewed with the help of ImageJ software.

Microbial species thrive within human hosts by establishing complex associations between themselves and the host. Even though species diversity can be measured (alpha-and beta-diversity), a methodology to estimate the impact of microorganisms in human pathways is still lacking. In this work we propose a computational approach to estimate which human pathways are targeted the most by microorganisms, while also identifying which microorganisms are prominent in this targeting. Our results were consistent with literature evidence, and thus we propose this methodology as a new prospective approach to be used for screening potentially impacted pathways.

A flexible and general mechanism for specifying problems relating to the sequencing of events and mechanically translating them into dataflow analysis algorithms capable of solving those problems is presented. Dataflow analysis has been used for quite some time in compiler code optimization. Most static analyzers have been custom-built to search for fixed and often quite limited classes of dataflow conditions. It is shown that the range of sequences for which it is interesting and worthwhile to search in actually quite broad and diverse. A formalism for specifying this diversity of conditions is created. It is shown that these conditions can be modeled essentially as dataflow analysis problems for which effective solutions are known. It is also shown how these solutions can be exploited to serve as the basis for mechanical creation of analyzers for these conditions.

Probabilistic analysis and practical algorithms for the flow shop weighted completion time problem

In the flow shop weighted completion time problem, a set of jobs has to be processed on m machines. Every machine has to process each one of the jobs, and every job has the same routing through the machines. The objective is to determine a sequence of the jobs on the machines so as to minimize the sum of the weighted completion times of all jobs on the final machine. In this paper, we present a characterization of the asymptotic optimal solution value for general distributions of the job processing times and weights. In particular, we show that the optimal objective value of this problem is asymptotically equivalent to certain single and parallel machine scheduling problems. This characterization leads to a better understanding of the effectiveness of the celebrated weighted shortest processing time algorithm, as well as to the development of an effective algorithm closely related to the profile fitting heuristic, which was previously utilized for flow shop makespan problems. Computational results show the effectiveness of WSPT and this modified profile fitting heuristic on a set of random test problems.
