Multi-objective layout optimization for sponge city by annealing algorithm and its environmental benefits analysis

With the development of urbanization, cities are facing crises such as waterlogging, water pollution, and floods. In order to actually alleviate urban floods and other disasters, China has proposed the "sponge city" construction concept. A multi-objective optimization method of the minimization of rainfall runoff, pollutant discharge and construction and operation costs and the maximization of environmental benefit is proposed by Simulated annealing (SA) algorithm in order to fulfill the planning and construction of sponge cities. Some Low-Impact Developments (LID) are optimized for the study area and the optimal underlying surface layout of sponge city is obtained. Results indicates that the optimal underlying surface layout of the study area satisfies Tianjin sponge city construction pilot implementation plan. For the study area, the annual runoff coefficient is 0.169 and the annual discharged pollutant mass of TSS, COD, TN and TP is reduced by 65.11 %, 62.06 %, 64.67 % and 80.94 %, respectively, which meets the requirements of annual runoff control coefficient (less than 0.22) and annual pollutant reduction rate (about 65 %) of sponge city construction pilot implementation plan. The optimal cost of the study area is about RMB 9.77*10(7) and the environmental benefits of the study area quantified by CO2 emission reduction is 1167 t.

Molecular reconstruction of bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTESE)-derived membranes using simulated annealing algorithm

1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTESE)-derived membranes are of great interest in gas-/liquid-phase separations, while the interplay between their chemical structure, pore topology, and permeability remains unexplored. This highlights the need for a realistic molecular model that captures the BTESE's nanostructure and the complex transport within its pores. By considering the two important ingredients (atomic chemical composition and physical density), we first employ the simulated annealing procedure to reconstruct a database of the BTESE models of different densities. By comparing the X-ray diffraction pattern with the experimental data, the reactive force field used in our molecular simulations strategy is found to capture the amorphous nature of the BTESE's nanostructure. In particular, the molecular texture parameters are screened to match the experimental density. We then turn to extract our BTESE models using the radial distribution function, bond order, and atomic partial charge. The chemical bonding features show that our BTESE model consists of the carbon- silicon-oxygen backbone with a few small molecules formed. Moreover, the pore size distribution of our BTESE model is found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. The sieving effect of the pore topology on the gas permanence observed in experiments is found to be well explained by such a molecular picture. These findings for the realistic molecular model and pore topology provide a means to probe the relationship between chemical structure and the gas transport within pores of the BTESE-derived membranes, as well as other organosilica membranes.

A simulated annealing deconvolution technique dealing with the ill-posed and ill-Conditioning problems is presented. Following a survey about direct and iterative deconvolution techniques, the simulated annealing approach for ill-posed and ill-conditioning decon volution is introduced. With comparison to some deconvolution techniques the new approach is described in details. A specific ill-posed and ill-Conditioning deconvolution example is consid ered and the deconvolution results using the simulated annealing approach and some conventional techniques such as clipped inverse filtering, reblurring, multiple-operator, constrained iteration, etc., are given. It has shown that the simulated annealing approach fights against the ill-posed and ill-conditioning successfully.

This paper reviews theoretical advances to the field of simulated annealing optimization and applications to physical design contributed by Ralph Otten. At this year's ISPD, Ralph Otten receives the ISPD Lifetime Achievement award for outstanding contributions made to the field of physical design automation over multiple decades. For this occasion this paper highlights some of the research contributions by Ralph Otten in simulated annealing. It recounts how he moved from applications of simulated annealing to analyzing and understanding the method from a theoretical standpoint and how it was developed into a general purpose algorithm.

The determination of a local lithospheric stress pattern from low magnitude seismic activity recorded at a local array is attempted by means of numerical simulations that include waveform inversion and annealing inversion techniques. A set of flat stratified layers are assumed for the propagating medium. The tests show that the annealing algorithm is a useful tool in this kind of study where collected seismic activity at local arrays could help us better understand local stress distributions in the lithosphere. Although real data recorded at local seismic arrays should be processed, assuming more realistic crust and upper mantle models, many characteristics of the annealing process described here could be used when studying real problems.

This paper focuses on the location and scale construction of urban electric vehicle charging stations. Based on the three environmental distributions of residents, industry and commerce, a comprehensive model considering the comprehensive consumption of users to charging stations, construction cost of charging stations and operating costs is established. The annealing factor of the annealing algorithm is introduced into the genetic algorithm, which ensures the diversity of the population, the global search ability and the optimization efficiency. For the specific situation, the optimal charging station location and constant volume are given.

In this paper, the performance of a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm named annealing-based PSO (APSO) is investigated to solve the redundant reliability problem with multiple component choices (RRP-MCC). This problem aims to choose an optimal combination of components and redundancy levels for a system with a series-parallel configuration that maximizes the overall system reliability. PSO is a population-based meta-heuristic algorithm inspired by the social behavior of the biological swarms that is designed for continuous decision spaces. As a local search engine (LSE), the proposed APSO employs the Metropolis-Hastings strategy, the key idea behind the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm. In APSO, the best position among all particles in each iteration is dynamically improved using the inner loop of the SA (i.e., equilibrium loop) while the temperature is updated in the main loop of the PSO algorithm. The well-known benchmarks are used to verify the performance of the proposed APSO. Even though APSO fails to outperform the best solution obtained in the literature, the contribution of this paper is comprised of the implementation of APSO as a hybrid meta-heuristic as well as the effect of Metropolis-Hastings strategy on the performance of the classical PSO. A mathematical model for the evolution of the component and air temperatures in a board of electronic devices is considered. The board consists of a grid with thermally active devices which generate heat that is conducted to their neighbors and to the edges of the board, as well as exchanged with a forced convective flow of cool air. The model consists of two coupled, discrete systems of equations: one for the temperatures of the devices and the other for the associated air temperatures. In our version of the model, the cooling term, i.e., the heat exchange between the board and the air, is linear. Existence and uniqueness of solutions is proved for our model, as well as convergence to the steady-state solution. The model is used, in conjunction with the annealing algorithm, to find the optimal placement of electronic devices on a board in such a way as to decrease an objective function of the temperature of the system, with applications to the reliability of such boards.
