Almost all cellular mobile communications including first generation analog systems, second generation digital systems, third generation WCDMA, and fourth generation OFDMA systems use Ultra High Frequency (UHF) band of radio spectrum with frequencies in the range of 300MHz-3GHz. This band of spectrum is becoming increasingly crowded due to spectacular growth in mobile data and other related services. More recently, there have been proposals to explore mmWave spectrum (3-300GHz) for commercial mobile applications due to its unique advantages such as spectrum availability and small component sizes. In this paper, we discuss system design aspects such as antenna array design, base station and mobile station requirements. We also provide system performance and SINR geometry results to demonstrate the feasibility of an outdoor mmWave mobile broadband communication system. We note that with adaptive antenna array beamforming, multi-Gbps data rates can be supported for mobile cellular deployments.

This paper sets an optimization criterion to maximize the performance from a given aperture by providing the geometrical locations of the antenna elements in a 'Through Wall Imaging' (TWI) system. In many real life applications there are strict constraints on the aperture size of TWI systems in order to have portable, easy to carry and light weight systems. Therefore it becomes very important to maximize the information capacity of objects behind the wall from a given physical dimension. A mathematical formulation is proposed herein to quantify the performance of any proposed geometry of an antenna array. A few examples for specific configurations are also presented and compared in different SNR conditions.

antenna array design using orthogonal modes has been extensively studied in the past. The design procedure is based on the projection of an arbitrary array factor on a basis defined by a set of orthogonal modes on the array structure. A design method is presented that relies on the construction of an orthogonal basis using the Gram-Schmidt orthonormalization method. Moreover, simplifications of the orthogonal projection are provided reducing the computational complexity of the design procedure. Finally, the validity of the method is displayed with a design example.

Causally-guided evolutionary optimization and its application to antenna array design

In recent years, evolutionary computation has been successfully used to solve problems involving engineering design and invention, sometimes producing results that are qualitatively different than previous traditionally-designed solutions. However, while evolutionary methods appear to be a promising tool for supporting design, their usefulness is substantially limited by their computational expense and inability to integrate expert knowledge with evolutionary search. Here we develop and evaluate methods for causally-guided evolutionary design based on expert-supplied cause-effect relations that guide how genetic operators are applied (in contrast to conventional genetic operations which are carried out blindly and randomly), using these methods for antenna array design. To our knowledge, this is the first study that biases genetic operations in response to the specific performance characteristics of the individuals to which they are applied, and the first to use explicit cause-effect relations to guide this process. Our experimental evaluation compares using evolutionary systems with and without causal guidance to design directional dipole antenna arrays that meet pre-specified performance criteria. We find that causally-guided systems produce optimal solutions with significantly greater frequency and significant computational savings, suggesting that this approach may substantially improve the use of evolutionary computation in engineering design.

Conformal antenna arrays have long represented an attractive solution to challenges imposed by an electromagnetic aperture on an aerospace platform. This allows designers to trade between array positioning and geometry, and avoids the significant aerodynamic drag of a planar array. This is hampered by the expense of the design and computational modelling required to ensure that a conformal array will meet its performance requirements. The proposed approach uses raycasting techniques to predict the rectilinear projection of a conformal aperture onto the farfield to calculate the maximum achievable beam coverage (aperture maximum directivity envelope). In order to compare aperture projection with the performance of the modelled arrays in a consistent manner, the steering efficiency (SE), which is the fraction of the farfield steerable to within 3dB of the maximum directivity, was calculated for the aperture, stacked patch, and conical monopole elements. The stacked patch elements demonstrated a SE of 18% over the steering plane compared with 40% for the arbitrary directional elements, and the optimum of 38% for the aperture overall. The Conical monopole elements achieved a SE of 8%, compared to 20% for the measured elements, and 33% achieved with arbitrary omnidirectional elements. These results demonstrate that, for both omnidirectional and directional elements, the aperture projection method offers a compelling tool for conformal array design, which is consistent with the achieved array performance for the stacked patch and conical monopole elements.

An improved mixed-integer particle swarm optimization (MI-PSO) algorithm is presented, which is called asynchronous updating particle swarm optimization (AU-PSO). The proposed algorithm speeds up convergence rate of PSO by handling discrete and continuous decision variables differently. The discrete variables have a possibility holding previous values, while the continuous variables are treated normally. This kind of treatment provides more chances to find a better solution. The proposed AU-PSO is then examined by test functions and successfully applied in a design of circular antenna array.

An Inclusive Survey on array antenna design for Millimeter-Wave Communications

The enormous growth of wireless data traffic in recent years has made the millimeter-wave (mm-wave) technology as a good fit for high-speed communication systems. Extensive works are continuing from the device to system, to the radio architecture, to the network to support the communication in mm-wave frequency ranges. To support this extensive high data rate, beam forming is found to be the key-enabling technology. Hence, an array antenna design is an extremely important issue. The beam-forming arrays are chosen to achieve the desired link capacity considering the high path loss and atmospheric loss at mm-wave frequencies and also to increase the coverage of the mm-wave communication system. There are diverse design challenges of the array due to the small size, use of large numbers of antennas in close vicinity, integration with radio-frequency (RF) front ends, hardware constraints, and so on. This paper focuses on the evolution and development of mm-wave array antenna and its implementation for wireless communication and numerous other related areas. The scope of the discussion is extended on the reported works in every sphere of mm-wave antenna array design, including the selection of antenna elements, array configurations, feed mechanism, integration with front-end circuitry to understand the effects on system performance, and the underlying reason of it. The new design aspects and research directions are unfolded as a result of this discussion.

Geostationary interferometric microwave sounder (GIMS), which is developed by National Space Science Center of CAS, will be the main payload on board of FY-4M satellite to monitor and measure internal constitution and precipitation parameters of atmosphere cloud cluster. GIMS is an interferometric aperture synthesis radiometer. antenna array of GIMS can obtain visibility functions of observation objects. It is very important for improving the system sensitivity and decreasing the complexity of the system. design of the antenna array is the key technique of GIMS, and position error analysis and adjustment of antenna array is also very important for improving the quality of the retrieved image of GIMS. According to the system performance requirements of GIMS, theory and method for design, position error analysis and adjustment of the antenna array have been investigated, and simulated results is also be presented in this paper.

As a key technology for 5G and beyond mobile communications, massive MIMO has been implemented, tested and will be widely deployed soon. Rectangular antenna arrays, associated with 32 to 64 transceivers, are the most commonly-considered configurations for massive MIMO base stations. When testing such massive MIMO systems in practical environments, we often obtain lower-than-expected system performance. That is to say, performance gain does not keep up with increases in hardware complexity and cost, making massive MIMO cost-inefficient in practice. We approach this problem by adapting massive MIMO antenna array design to propagation characteristics in different deployment scenarios. In this paper, we focus on rectangular array structure design with practical limits of array dimensions. The 3GPP 3D channel model is used to extract propagation properties and evaluate corresponding performance of designed arrays. Simulation results show that we gain significant performance improvements by matching array structures to propagation characteristics, as compared to using conventional array configurations. More importantly, relatively small number of antennas/transceivers and very simple processing such as matched-filtering achieve this performance gain. The results indicate a potential to boost massive MIMO performance and to some extent solve the cost-inefficiency problem, by deploying antenna arrays with suitable structures for different propagation scenarios.
