With the popularity of the Python language, community developers create and maintain a lot of third-party packages. APIs change frequently during the package evolving. Package developers need keeping backward compatibility of APIs to avoid breaking client code. Detecting breaking changes in Python packages is challenging because of Python's dynamic features and flexible designs, such as dynamic typing, API aliases, confusing public boundary and flexible argument passing. Despite the language's popularity, there have been few tools aiming to detect breaking changes, and existing approaches lack sufficient consideration of the mentioned challenges, resulting in imprecise and incomplete detection. Briefly, we propose an API-model-based systematic approach to address this problem. We design a Python-specific API model and classify API changes in different breaking levels. Based on the model, we obtain APIs with their types by a robust hybrid analysis and detect graded changes by checking constraints on API pairs. We implement a prototype, AexPy. Thanks to the more comprehensive model and hybrid analysis adopted, AexPy outperforms the state-of-the-art techniques for Python with an 86.9% recall on a dataset of 61 known breaking changes. Besides, AexPy detects 405 (manually verified) high and medium breaking changes with a precision of 93.5% on the latest versions of 45 packages. Specifically, in addition to 291 documented breaking changes, AexPy detects 114 undocumented changes. We report 63 undocumented breaking changes to active package developers, and 31 have been confirmed.

Deprecation is a way to inform clients using an application programming interface (API) that the usage of this API is discouraged. Tool support and research for deprecation in local APIs are well established. However, nowadays web APIs are more commonly used, e.g., using the REST architectural style. However, the techniques to detect and handle the usage of deprecated local APIs cannot be directly applied to web APIs. Previous approaches for detecting deprecated web APIs focus on static analysis of client code by detecting calls to web APIs and, subsequently, an investigation of associated API specifications. These approaches currently have two essential limitations: (i) The target of an API call can often not be determined statically. (ii) Deprecation in API specifications is not the only way to signal deprecation for web APIs. We introduce a dynamic approach using tracing to detect calls to web APIs. Subsequently, we check the called APIs for deprecation using an API specification, response meta-data, or a knowledge base. This approach addresses both limitations of the detection with static analysis. We implement the approach and evaluate it on three projects, including client-server calls as well as a microservice benchmark system. The empirical evaluation yields a precision of 1.00 and a recall of 0.95. The false negatives can be attributed to a shortcoming in the automatic instrumentation provided by OpenTelemetry observability framework.

Ontologies define data organization and meaning in Knowledge Graphs (KGs). However, ontologies have generally not been taken into account when designing and generating application programming interfaces (APIs) to allow developers to consume KG data in a developer-friendly way. To fill this gap, this work proposes a method for API generation based on the artefacts generated during the ontology development process. This method is described as part of a new phase, called ontology exploitation, that may be included in the last stages of the traditional ontology development methodologies. Moreover, to support some of the tasks of the proposed method, we developed OATAPI, a tool that generates APIs from two ontology artefacts: the competency questions and the ontology serialization. The conclusions of this work reflect that the limitations found in the state-of-the-art have been addressed both at the methodological and tooling levels for the generation of APIs based on ontology artefacts. Finally, the lines of future work present several challenges that need to be addressed so that the potential of KGs and ontologies can be more easily exploited by application developers.

The current digital revolution has a strong impact on the people life and on the research process in most of the scientific areas. Geography and cartography have been invested by the innovation connected with GIS. Moreover, they reacted to the new opportunities given by the new web applications founded on the dynamic paradigm of Web 2.0. In the geographic framework the possibility to self-supply the online contents brought to the Volunteered Geographic Information phenomenon. This study presents a number of preliminary results of a project aimed at reformulating the theoretical framework of Photographic Tourism. The research focuses on the integration of social media and web mapping as an application of neogeography. The estimation (based on a sample) of the proportion of geotagged photos loaded on Flickr during 2016 and the analysis of the spatial distribution of the considered sample are the main objectives of the paper.

This paper describes the development and architecture of a plugin for the NASA Auralization Framework that synthesizes rotor sound pressures sample by sample for simulated propagation to auralize rotorcraft flyovers. The main component of the plugin is a preprocessor that synthesizes sound pressures before propagation methods are called. Rotor blade loadings, motion, and geometry data from various tools serve as input to the plugin. Farassat formulation 1A, a solution to the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equation, is used for the sound pressure calculations. Use of the plugin is demonstrated with two examples of steady periodic sound synthesis, but the synthesis method and preprocessor architecture described in this paper are also applicable to unsteady periodic and aperiodic sound syntheses.

A framework has been developed for describing how a computational mesh is associated to the geometry model it discretizes. The target application of this framework is surface mesh adaptation in a CFD flow solver. The framework, called MeshLink, consists of two components. First, a schema has been defined for describing the one-to-many associativity of a surface mesh to the geometry model entities to which it is attached. Second, a high-level library provides a kernel-agnostic wrapper for providing the necessary geometry queries to an application (e.g., mesher, flow solver). Both the schema and library are provided freely and openly. MeshLink's ability to support solution mesh adaptation on linear and curved meshes for a high-order flow solution is demonstrated on several test cases relevant to the aerospace and automotive industries.

This paper presents a methodology to estimate the potential user base of a business airport shuttle service operated by electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxis. The user base of the air taxi service is estimated using a discrete choice model that estimates the probability an individual will use the air taxi service given their income level and the time savings compared to driving. Air taxi flights are presumed to originate at existing heliports and regional airports with major hub airports as destinations. Data from the U.S. Census are used to determine where likely passengers for the service live and work, and comparisons of flight time to drive time are made based on a turn-by-turn driving directions routing algorithm. The proposed methodology is applied to the Los Angeles, New York City, Boston, Orlando, and Atlanta metropolitan areas, which were identified as potential candidates for the service based on an analysis of business-class airport passenger throughput. Analysis of these regions suggests that near-term eVTOL aircraft may be able to dramatically increase the expected user base when compared with present-day helicopters flying the same mission. An analysis of the impact of assumptions used in the methodology and trade-off studies including vehicle design range, payload, and cruising speed are also presented.

Historically, flood dominates the most occurred disasters worldwide. In Malaysia, the highest relative frequency of disaster hazards is flood. Public citizen acts as bystander contribute vital information via social media, which should be more scrutinized in a way such as sentiment analysis. Indeed, sentiment analysis has a better effect in movie or product review, survey response, political data science and social media monitoring. Important to realize, a repeated changing objective in disaster management that need to be administer is tend to have higher flexibility in response to shift disaster phases. Due to quick significant change of flood scenario, it is important to have faster improvement process. Thereupon, the practical approach mentioned here can be operationalized by the incorporation of SOA technology. This is due to the simpler service integration because SOA is supported on different platform. By incorporating SOA in flood disaster management framework for sentiment analysis, this approach leads to the reusability. The goal of this work is to review existing flood disaster management, analyzing their incorporation with sentiment analysis and SOA. It also discusses the way a SOA methodology can be effectively designed and implemented in flood disaster management framework by using sentiment analysis.

TinkerCell: Modular CAD tool for synthetic biology

Background: Synthetic biology brings together concepts and techniques from engineering and biology. In this field, computer-aided design (CAD) is necessary in order to bridge the gap between computational modeling and biological data. Using a CAD application, it would be possible to construct models using available biological "parts" and directly generate the DNA sequence that represents the model, thus increasing the efficiency of design and construction of synthetic ***: An application named TinkerCell has been developed in order to serve as a CAD tool for synthetic biology. TinkerCell is a visual modeling tool that supports a hierarchy of biological parts. Each part in this hierarchy consists of a set of attributes that define the part, such as sequence or rate constants. Models that are constructed using these parts can be analyzed using various third-party C and Python programs that are hosted by TinkerCell via an extensive C and Python application programming interface (API). TinkerCell supports the notion of a module, which are networks with interfaces. Such modules can be connected to each other, forming larger modular networks. TinkerCell is a free and open-source project under the Berkeley Software Distribution license. Downloads, documentation, and tutorials are available at http://***: An ideal CAD application for engineering biological systems would provide features such as: building and simulating networks, analyzing robustness of networks, and searching databases for components that meet the design criteria. At the current state of synthetic biology, there are no established methods for measuring robustness or identifying components that fit a design. The same is true for databases of biological parts. TinkerCell's flexible modeling framework allows it to cope with changes in the field. Such changes may involve the way parts are characterized or the way synthetic networks are modeled and analyzed computationally.

The lack of accurate Work Unit Codes (WUC) in aircraft maintenance records hinders logistical improvements given current practices of manual, free-text narratives which routinely suffer from natural language challenges, misspellings, and undocumented flight line jargon. This work uses recent advances in machine learning (ML) to score the translation of unstructured text narratives against ground truth data to correct WUCs in the field. Throughout this evaluation, a set of experiments compares dictionary development of predictive keywords, statistical feature generation, and modern word embeddings pre-trained on a much larger text corpus to evaluate effectiveness of these methods on free form text from 10+ years of maintainer-entered records. Given the diversity of the labels, we define and implement a two-stage decomposition of the WUC using 2-character prediction, followed hierarchically by further sub-system and location finders. Where possible, meaningful, or explainable rules are extracted to guide future WUC implementations. This work focuses on a dual delivery method - as a production application programming interface (API) for integration into end user clients and production deployment in a multi-customer Business Intelligence solution. This methodology supports maintainers from data collection to maintenance leadership decision making.
