Structural layout and weight estimation are critical elements of aircraft conceptual design. Historically, designers have often relied on empirical equations to estimate the structural weight during early stages of a design due to the lack of robust and fast structural layout tools. This reliance on estimating equations is obviously problematic for atypical or novel designs that do not align themselves well with historical data. Conversely, the M4 Structures Studio (M4SS) software package is a physics-based structural modeling tool capable of rapidly defining aircraft structural layouts with a parametric relationship to a geometry model. The following effort outlined in this paper demonstrates the ability for M4SS to interface with geometric models developed within the Engineering Sketch Pad (ESP) framework. The interface relies on geometric attribution to drive semi-automation of the structural layup, all while preserving parametric connectivity between the structural and geometric models. This parametric connectivity allows a designer to morph the structural model by simply making changes to the parameters defining the vehicles outer model line. This interface and integration is demonstrated on both generic transport and fighter models.

Near Field Communication (NFC) provides a contactless technology for data transmission between smart phones, PCs, PDAs and such devices. It is based on the Bluetooth technology as they are both short-range communication technologies. With NFC people can use their mobile phones to pay for goods and services. They can also use other applications such as ticketing, loyalty, etc. Having sensitive information as well as several parties involved during the NFC operation, caused the delay towards its adoption. Managing NFC applications has become a major issue in the market and stakeholders are testing different implementation methods to deliver the most secure, flexible and manageable NFC to their customers. We believe cloud computing can solve many issues in regards to NFC application management and in this paper we have proposed our approach which can be implemented for the ease of managing the whole NFC ecosystem. We have also considered different SE architectures and explained our preferable model.

This paper addresses the challenges posed by new 5G-IoT (Internet-of-Things) satellite constellations in telecommunication. The focus is on the development of an efficient and autonomous management system for such constellations. The authors previously presented a management tool and a simulator capable of computing visibility events across multiple locations, including ground stations, user equipment, and target areas. Here, the contact simulator has been upgraded to incorporate key features such as inter-satellite links, Kalman filter for orbit determination, and the implementation of link budgets. These advancements enable improved management and optimization of IoT satellite constellations in the evolving telecommunication landscape. The structure of the tool is restated with minor advancements in automation and efficiency.

M4 Structures Studio (M4SS) is a physics-based structural modeling tool capable of rapidly defining aircraft structural layouts. Additionally, the structural layouts maintain a parametric relationship to a geometry model. Previous work has demonstrated the ability for M4SS to interface with geometric models developed within the Engineering Sketch Pad (ESP) framework. The effort outlined in this paper focuses on furthering that integration by developing an M4SS Analysis interface Module (AIM) for the ESP-based Computational Aircraft Prototype Synthesis (CAPS) library. The AIM will allow M4SS to interface with other tools within a CAPS problem. Additionally, enhancements were made to M4SS to streamline AIM development and improve its utility. The improved M4SS and ESP integration is demonstrated on a scaled flutter model based on the X-56.

An agnotological analysis of APIs: or, disconnectivity and the ideological limits of our knowledge of social media

Adopting an agnotological perspective, this article extends the critical literature on APIs (application programing interfaces) by systematically showing that social media APIs are largely blind to acts of disconnectivity such as unfriending and unliking. We do this through analysis of the traces of social media usage that are not accessible through APIs as gleaned from the technical documentation published for developers by 12 major SNSs. Our findings make two main contributions. First, we show for the first time that APIs offer virtually no access to data about disconnectivity. Second, we show that APIs offer a very limited historical perspective, particularly regarding disconnectivity. However, for types of users that might spend money on advertising, far more historical and disconnectivity-oriented information is accessible through the API. This has practical consequences for research and contributes to an agnotology of social media that sheds critical light on the advertiser-friendly atmosphere of connectivity that social media try to create.

Background: Referring patients to specialty care is an inefficient and error-prone process. Gaps in the referral process lead to delays in patients' access to care, negative patient experience, worse health outcomes, and increased operational costs. While implementation of standards-based electronic referral options can alleviate some of these inefficiencies, many referrals to tertiary and quaternary care centers continue to be sent via fax. Objective: We describe the design process and architecture for a software application that has been developed and deployed to optimize the referrals intake process by automating the processing and digitization of incoming specialty referral faxes, extracting key data elements and integrating them into the electronic health record (EHR), and organizing referrals. Methods: A human-centered design approach was used to identify and describe the inefficiencies in the external referral process at our large, urban tertiary care center. Referrals Automation, an application to convert referral faxes to digital referrals in the EHR, was conceptualized based on key stakeholder interviews and time and motion studies. This application was designed using Substitutable Medical applications and Reusable Technologies (SMART) and Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resource (FHIR) platforms to allow for adaptability into other healthcare organizations. Results: Referrals Automation software was developed as a healthcare information technology solution to streamline the fax to referral process. The application was implemented into several specialty clinics. Metrics were built-in to the applications to evaluate and guide the further iteration of these features. Conclusions: Referrals Automation will enhance the referrals process by further streamlining and organizing the patient referral process.

Attention is the fundamental element of effective learning, memory, and interaction. Learning however, with the evolvement of technologies in the modern digital age, has surpassed traditional learning systems to more convenient online or e-learning systems. Nevertheless, unlike in the traditional learning systems, attention detection of a student in an e-learning environment remains one of the barely explored areas in Human Computer Interaction. This study proposes a multimodal ensemble solution to detect the level of attentiveness of a student in an e-learning environment, with the use of computer vision, natural language processing, and deep learning to overcome the barriers in identifying user attention in e-learning. The proposed multimodal captures, processes, and predicts user attentiveness levels of individual students, which are subsequently aggregated through an ensemble model to derive an overall outcome of better accuracy than individual model outcomes. The final outcome of the ensemble model produces a range of percentages, within which the attentiveness level of the student lies during a single online lesson. This range is consequently delivered to the users through an application programming interface.

This paper presents a system able to generate an abstraction framework over a RDF-based, semantic triplestore, offering Object-Oriented application programming interfaces to be made available for external applications. The system only requires a well-defined RDF schema and a minimal supervision by the user, and is able to produce all of the components of the API framework at their different layers, ranging from data source classes up to higher-level modules in terms of web service interfaces, in order to provide CRUD operations over the underlying semantic data. The system is sufficiently generic to accept any RDF repository with its schema as input, and can be easily configured to fine-tune the automatic generation of the API components to suit the needs of specific applications. The system has been deployed and tested on top of a large semantic repository featuring a schema where multiple real-world conceptualizations are defined, including one representing a learning model specifically designed for advanced e-learning management platforms.

Various security APIs (application programming interfaces) are being used in a variety of application areas requiring the information security function. However, these standards are not compatible, and the developer must use those APIs selectively depending on the application environment or the programming language. To resolve this problem, we propose the standard draft of the information security component, while SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) using the confidentiality and integrity component interface has been implemented to verify validity of the standard proposal. The implemented SSL uses the lower-level SSL component when establishing the RMI (Remote Method Invocation) communication between components, as if the security algorithm had been implemented by adding one more layer on the TCP/IP.

This paper presents Songle Sync, a web-based platform on which hundreds of Internet-connected devices-including smartphones, computers, and other physical computing devices-can be controlled to synchronize with music playback. It uses music-understanding technologies to dynamically synthesize music-driven multimedia performances from a musical piece of choice. To simultaneously control hundreds of devices, a conventional architecture keeps always-on connections between them. However, it does not scale and suffers from latency and jitter issues when there are various devices with potentially unstable networks. We address this with a novel autonomous control architecture in which each device is notified of forthcoming musical events (e.g., beats and chorus sections) to automatically drive various changes in multimedia performances. Moreover, we provide a development kit of an event-driven multimedia framework for JavaScript, example programs, and an interactive tutorial. To evaluate the platform, we compared latencies, jitters, and amounts of network traffic between ours and the conventional architecture. To examine use cases in the wild, we deployed the platform to drive over a hundred of a variety of devices. We also developed a web browser-based application for a multimedia performance with music playback. It provided audiences of hundreds with a bring-your-own-device experience of synchronized animations on smartphones. In addition, the development kit was used in a two-day hackathon. We report lessons learned from these studies and discuss the future of the Internet of Musical Things.
