We demonstrate the advantages of using geometry-based high-order finite element approximations for the solution of dispersion-dominant wave-dependent problems like structuralacoustics. Our approach uses an hp-finite-element framework that is tightly coupled to a geometry-based system for curved mesh generation, adaptation and analysis attribution. This enables robust automation of the entire solution process with minimal manual intervention. We give examples involving the structural-acoustics response of three-dimensional visco-elastic structures and show that high-order methods provide significantly higher accuracy per unit computational cost, including wall-clock time and memory needs, when compared to low-order approximations. Our results show that a high-order approximation can match the solution accuracy of a low-order approximation using 43 times fewer unknown degrees-of-freedom. We also highlight the critical role of accurate geometry representation to achieve these gains.

Deep convolutional neural networks have been successfully used in image classification, image segmentation, and many other recognition tasks in computer vision. Nevertheless, building specialized models for industrial applications, is still a challenging task (as these problems often lack the rich and fully tagged databses, such as the one found in ImageNet [1, 2]). We used the "Airbus Ship Detection Challenge" as a case study to demonstrate how transfer learning can aid in building models for image classification and segmentation within an industrial setting. The training set is highly biased as there is only 22% of the satellite images with ships on it. On top of that, images are very noisy, with clouds, haze, ships near coastal lines and ports, etc.. Our proposed solution used two deep neural networks: a convolutional neural network for image classification (selecting images with ships on it) followed by a residual network for image segmentation (returning the ship locations within the image). More specifically, the image classification was done through a VGG16 network [3] while the image segmentation was done through a U-Net [4] (we tested both VGG16 and InceptionV3 [5] as encoders). For this application, our results show that a) using transfer learning from models previously created for ImageNet, we were able to achieve a 30% savings in computational cost associated with training while keeping the same accuracy level, and b) both VGG16 and inception led to accurate U-Net models for image segmentation, even though there is slightly smaller computational cost when using inception.

Engineering resilient distributed systems remains extremely challenging, particularly in mapping from collective specifications to individual device behavior. Aggregate programming aims to address this problem using a computational field abstraction to provide inherent guarantees of resilience, scalability, and safe composition. These capabilities are provided, however, by an expressive but terse set of operators too low-level for pragmatic use in complex systems development. We thus present an API to raise the level of abstraction, thereby providing an accessible and user-friendly interface for construction of complex resilient distributed systems. In particular, we capture and organize a large, heterogeneous collection of algorithms and use patterns into a unified framework, including methods for common tasks such as leader election, distance and state estimation, and gossip-based information dissemination. We demonstrate how the expressiveness of this library reduces the abstraction gap required to engineer scenarios of large-scale pervasive computing, while introducing the novel multiInstance pattern enabling an unanticipated composition of computational fields.

Healthcare-related research studies often deploy ecological momentary assessment techniques to sample information from participants in their natural environment. This paper presents an online system to support remote access of ecological self-report and actigraphy-based measurements for individuals with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and their caregivers. The presented framework includes a custom mobile app and makes use of a web-based application programming interface for data collection with wrist-worn actigraphy devices. The system was evaluated with a research protocol to measure sleep, fatigue, and pain for individuals with ALS and their caregivers (N=8) over a consecutive seven-day period. Though daily self-report response rates were widespread (0%-100%) and the remote actigraphy collection varied in reliability, novel relationships between individuals with ALS and their caregivers were identified from the collected data. Online, ecological systems can support real-time remote monitoring and/or interventions to help understand diseases like ALS and advance healthcare research.

Many network cameras have been deployed for various purposes, such as monitoring traffic, watching natural scenes, and observing weather. The data from these cameras may provide valuable information about the world. This paper describes the unexplored opportunities and challenges to harvest the information in the global camera networks. A cloud-based system is proposed to harvest the information from many cameras in an efficient way. This system provides an application programming interface (API) that allows users to analyze the multimedia big data from many cameras simultaneously. Users may also store the data for off-line analysis. This system uses the cloud for computing and storage. Experiments demonstrate the ability to process millions of images from thousands of cameras within several hours.

Embedded, textual DSLs are often provided as an API wrapped around object-oriented application frameworks to ease framework integration. While literature presents claims that DSL-based application development is beneficial, empirical evidence for this is rare. We present the results of an experiment comparing the complexity of three different object-oriented framework APIs and an embedded, textual DSL. For this comparative experiment, we implemented the same, non-trivial application scenario using these four different APIs. Then, we performed an Object-Points (OP) analysis, yielding indicators for the API complexity specific to each API variant. The main observation for our experiment is that the embedded, textual DSL incurs the smallest API complexity. Although the results are exploratory, as well as limited to the given application scenario and a single embedded DSL, our findings can direct future empirical work. The experiment design is applicable for similar API design evaluations.

Rapid structural analysis tools have become an important part of the design cycle for aerospace companies for the last several decades. As these tools have been developed over time, there is often little consideration for shared software infrastructure between the tools, which makes design and analysis cumbersome due to a lack of commonality in input and output data and reporting, as well as poor traceability of results. Under the Rapid Tools task of the Advanced Composites Consortium (ACC), four aerospace tools were recently implemented or enhanced in the HyperSizer stress framework and then evaluated by this consortium of industry and government organizations. The framework provides an automated software environment for executing the rapid tools for analysis and sizing, quantifying margins of safety for thousands of load cases, and generating reports in support of FAA certification. This paper describes the process by which the tools were enhanced or implemented in the stress framework under the ACC project, and the evaluation conducted by industry consortium members.

The requirement of high power outputs and high efficiencies of combustion engines such as rocket engines, diesel engines, and gas turbines has resulted in the incremented of the system pressure close to the thermodynamically critical point. This increase in pressure often leads to the fluids becoming either transcritical or supercritical in state. This has led to increased interest in both the multi-component phase change phenomena as well as their chemical reactions. In this work, an artificial neural network (ANN) aided VLE model is coupled with a fully compressible computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver to simulate the transcritical processes occurring in high-pressure liquid-fueled propulsion systems. The ANN is trained on Python using the TensorFlow library, optimized for inference (i.e., prediction) using ONNX Run-time (a cross-platform inference and training machine-learning accelerator), and coupled with a C++ based fully compressible CFD solver. This plug-and-play model/methodology can be used to convert any fully compressible and conservative CFD solver to simulate transcritical processes using only open-source packages, without the need of in-house VLE-based CFD development. The solver is then used to study high-pressure shock-droplet interaction in both two- and four-component systems where qualitative and quantitative agreement is shown with results based on both direct evaluation and the state-of-the-art in-situ adaptive tabulation (ISAT) method. The ANN model is faster than the direct evaluation method and the ISAT model by 4 times for the four-component shock-droplet interaction. The ANN model also shows implicit load balancing as long as the MPI decomposition is performed uniformly amongst the number of cores chosen, as the inference time for ANN predict does not change with the change in thermodynamic state, unlike traditional VLE solvers. This paper describes an approach to deform the surface mesh of a CAD model in response to a change in the shape of the CAD model. It is an advance over existing techniques because it allows the boundary topology of the model to change. To achieve the deformation, one-to-one topology match is achieved between both models using the concept of virtual topology. The surface mesh is deformed using constrained Delaunay triangulation.

Marketing scholars increasingly use web scraping and application programming interfaces (APIs) to collect data from the internet. Yet, despite the widespread use of such web data, the idiosyncratic and sometimes insidious challenges in its collection have received limited attention. How can researchers ensure that the data sets generated via web scraping and APIs are valid? While existing resources emphasize technical details of extracting web data, the authors propose a novel methodological framework focused on enhancing its validity. In particular, the framework highlights how addressing validity concerns requires the joint consideration of idiosyncratic technical and legal/ethical questions along the three stages of collecting web data: selecting data sources, designing the data collection, and extracting the data. The authors further review more than 300 articles using web data published in the top five marketing journals and offer a typology of how web data have advanced marketing thought. The article concludes with directions for future research to identify promising web data sources and embrace novel approaches for using web data to capture and describe evolving marketplace realities.
