GPU computing performance analysis on matrix multiplication

The machine learning has been widely used in intelligent data mining. The high-computational complexity of machine learning and huge data volume present challenges to computing platforms. Graphics processor unit (GPU) provides powerful computing support for machine learning but shows different performances under different computing scales and/or different development methods. Analysing the performance of GPUs in different application scenarios helps to improve computing performance. In this study, the matrix multiplication, which is a common and time-consuming computation operation in machine learning, is performed on different data scales and different development methods to analyse the relationship between GPU computing performance with matrix scale and development methods. The experimental data shows that the performance of GPU is not much improved compared with the central processing unit in small-scale data calculation. Also, using a high-level application programming interface for GPU development is less computing-efficient than the GPU programming language computes unified device architecture C.

Nowadays, smart farming involves the integration of advanced technologies that incorporate low-cost robots to meet the required knowledge and maintain the health of plants in farming. Technologies like precision agriculture are also used to optimize resources based on the field condition. Internet of Green Things is also one of the technologies to integrate and share the information between people and healthy farm things. Internet of Green Things gives the information like soil moisture, temperature, humidity, and nutrient level by means of respective sensors. Monitoring and information gathering in green houses with the help of robots is a tedious and expensive process. In this connection, information is shared among low-cost robots encouraging data availability of the current state of a plant with other robots. This will emphasize the monitoring of green houses in a well-organized way. In this article, a Flask-based framework through Raspberry Pi is proposed for interoperability among the low-cost ESP8266 robots. Data gathering is performed by smart robots that are accessible through Message Queuing Telemetry Transport subscribes by means of Representational State Transfer application programming interface. A cloud-like database server is provided to stock up the data. The integration of robotics with Internet of Green Things gains more advantage in gathering about spatial information data that are connected with the irrigation. Visualization techniques and perspectives based on Internet of Green Things for precision agriculture in the field of farming are highlighted.

SymPhas-General Purpose Software for Phase-Field, Phase-Field Crystal, and Reaction-Diffusion Simulations

This work develops a new open source application programming interface (API) and software package called SymPhas for simulations of phase-field, phase-field crystal, and reaction-diffusion models, supporting up to three dimensions and an arbitrary number of fields. SymPhas delivers two novel program capabilities: 1) User specification of models from the associated dynamical equations in an unconstrained form and 2) extensive support for integrating user-developed discrete-grid-based numerical solvers into the API. The capability to specify general phase-field models is primarily achieved by developing a novel symbolic algebra functionality that can formulate mathematical expressions at compile time;is able to apply rules of symbolic algebra such as distribution, factoring, and automatic simplification;and support user-driven expression tree manipulation. A modular design based on the C++ template meta-programming paradigm is applied to the symbolic algebra library and general API implementation to minimize application runtime and increase the accessibility of the API for third party development. SymPhas is written in C/C++ and emphasizes high-performance capabilities via parallelization with OpenMP and the C++ standard library. SymPhas is equipped with a forward Euler solver and a semi-implicit Fourier spectral solver. Sample implementations and simulations of several phase-field models are presented, generated using the semi-implicit Fourier spectral solver.

Background: Despite steady gains in life expectancy, individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) lung disease still experience rapid pulmonary decline throughout their clinical course, which can ultimately end in respiratory failure. Point-of-care tools for accurate and timely information regarding the risk of rapid decline is essential for clinical decision support. Objective: This study aims to translate a novel algorithm for earlier, more accurate prediction of rapid lung function decline in patients with CF into an interactive web based application that can be integrated within electronic health record systems, via collaborative development with clinicians. Methods: Longitudinal clinical history, lung function measurements, and time-invariant characteristics were obtained for 30,879 patients with CF who were followed in the US Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Patient Registry (2003-2015). We iteratively developed the application using the R Shiny framework and by conducting a qualitative study with care provider focus groups (N=17). Results: A clinical conceptual model and 4 themes were identified through coded feedback from application users: (1) ambiguity in rapid decline, (2) clinical utility, (3) clinical significance, and (4) specific suggested revisions. These themes were used to revise our application to the currently released version, available online for exploration. This study has advanced the application's potential prognostic utility for monitoring individuals with CF lung disease. Further application development will incorporate additional clinical characteristics requested by the users and also a more modular layout that can be useful for care provider and family interactions. Accessing the SEED Genome Databases via Web Services API: Tools for Programmers

Background: The SEED integrates many publicly available genome sequences into a single resource. The database contains accurate and up-to-date annotations based on the subsystems concept that leverages clustering between genomes and other clues to accurately and efficiently annotate microbial genomes. The backend is used as the foundation for many genome annotation tools, such as the Rapid Annotation using Subsystems Technology (RAST) server for whole genome annotation, the metagenomics RAST server for random community genome annotations, and the annotation clearinghouse for exchanging annotations from different resources. In addition to a web user interface, the SEED also provides Web services based API for programmatic access to the data in the SEED, allowing the development of third-party tools and mash-ups. Results: The currently exposed Web services encompass over forty different methods for accessing data related to microbial genome annotations. The Web services provide comprehensive access to the database back end, allowing any programmer access to the most consistent and accurate genome annotations available. The Web services are deployed using a platform independent service-oriented approach that allows the user to choose the most suitable programming platform for their application. Example code demonstrate that Web services can be used to access the SEED using common bioinformatics programming languages such as Perl, Python, and Java. Conclusions: We present a novel approach to access the SEED database. Using Web services, a robust API for access to genomics data is provided, without requiring large volume downloads all at once. The API ensures timely access to the most current datasets available, including the new genomes as soon as they come online.

An iPhone application for On-Demand Access to Digital Soil Survey Information

The mission statement of the National Cooperative Soil Survey (NCSS) emphasizes the importance of information delivery in widely accessible and relevant formats. This aspect of the mission is especially relevant now as the NCSS explores new ways to circulate large and complex geospatial data sets to the public in digital formats. Web based delivery mechanisms that can simplify the interpretation and delivery of these data are evolving at a rapid pace. The disadvantage of web based soil survey formats is that user access is limited to a computer terminal with an internet connection. We have developed an iPhone application to support on-demand access to soil survey information from any location (with cell phone coverage) in the lower 48 states. This application interfaces with our web-based soil survey application (***/map;verified 20 July 2010) to extend soils information in a user-friendly format.

An Approach to Problem-oriented interfaces for applications in Distributed Computing Systems

The paper describes the implementation of an efficient user interface for applied software in distributed computing systems. As part of this work, a software platform has been developed for the formation of problem-oriented interfaces for application software packages and components of distributed computing systems. The main purpose of the system is to simplify the input of technical settings, launch specific jobs if required and monitor all intermediate processes. Thus, it provides an intuitive user interface for working directly with an application system, and does not require knowledge of low-level operations. Using web services and modern information technology, the developed platform makes it possible to create a set of simple and convenient interfaces for researchers who use high-performance computer systems in their work. As an example, we describe the adaptation of the FHI98md code for a Grid system.

SINNER: A Reward-Sensitive Algorithm for Imbalanced Malware Classification Using Neural Networks with Experience Replay

Reports produced by popular malware analysis services showed a disparity in samples available for different malware families. The unequal distribution between such classes can be attributed to several factors, such as technological advances and the application domain that seeks to infect a computer virus. Recent studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of deep learning (DL) algorithms when learning multi-class classification tasks using imbalanced datasets. This can be achieved by updating the learning function such that correct and incorrect predictions performed on the minority class are more rewarded or penalized, respectively. This procedure can be logically implemented by leveraging the deep reinforcement learning (DRL) paradigm through a proper formulation of the Markov decision process (MDP). This paper proposes SINNER, i.e., a DRL-based multi-class classifier that approaches the data imbalance problem at the algorithmic level by exploiting a redesigned reward function, which modifies the traditional MDP model used to learn this task. Based on the experimental results, the proposed formula appears to be successful. In addition, SINNER has been compared to several DL-based models that can handle class skew without relying on data-level techniques. Using three out of four datasets sourced from the existing literature, the proposed model achieved state-of-the-art classification performance.

Comparison of Three Different Open Architecture Controllers

Since the late 80s there are a growing need of the machine tool builders and the end users to have open architecture controllers. Different levels of openness can be defined analyzing the available research results and products. The main initiatives leading the current research in these efforts are the European OSACA, the American OMAC and the OSEC from Japan. A complex comparison of these projects and their goals and achievements is presented in this paper. It is stated that in their present form it is not possible to merge easily the three results to get a unified and potentially worldwide accepted open architecture controller.
