This paper presents a case study of the integration of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) physical layer into the radio protocol subsystem of a macrocell base station. We conduct tests in the laboratory using a modular experimental setup aimed at validating this protocol stack integration. Measurements and analysis are carried out with the aid of Wireshark, a well-known protocol analyzer tool. This choice allows the inspection of data packets at the application program interface between PHY and MAC subsystems. Our results suggest that the LTE protocol stack can operate synchronously, thus supporting message sequences conveyed within both random access and radio-resource-control connection procedures. The proposed experimental setup and test methodology make it possible to validate the control plane operation of the protocol stack without the need of a core network interface.

The large number of published assessment procedures in geotechnical engineering, as well as the large and ever-growing number of field and experimental data sets makes it difficult to perform a full validation of a new procedure. Essentially demonstrating that the new procedure is superior to existing approaches across all existing observed evidence. To enable more effective validation, this paper presents a framework for linking experimental/field data with geotechnical assessment procedures using physically based object-orientated databases. A brief explanation of physically based object-oriented programming in engineering is presented, as well as a framework for the development of compatible databases. The database design covers several key aspects: behaviour based type checking, identification numbers for objects, object methods handle saving and loading exceptions, and the use of default attribute names. This philosophy is then applied to a specific problem of earthquake geotechnical engineering where publicly available centrifuge test results are compared with simplified methods for prediction of the build up of excess pore pressure and the triggering of seismically induced soil liquefaction.

The security of many applications relies on the kernel being secure, but history suggests that kernel vulnerabilities are routinely discovered and exploited. In particular, exploitable vulnerabilities in kernel modules are common. This paper proposes LXFI, a system which isolates kernel modules from the core kernel so that vulnerabilities in kernel modules cannot lead to a privilege escalation attack. To safely give kernel modules access to complex kernel APIs, LXFI introduces the notion of API integrity, which captures the set of contracts assumed by an interface. To partition the privileges within a shared module, LXFI introduces module principals. Programmers specify principals and API integrity rules through capabilities and annotations. Using a compiler plugin, LXFI instruments the generated code to grant, check, and transfer capabilities between modules, according to the programmer's annotations. An evaluation with Linux shows that the annotations required on kernel functions to support a new module are moderate, and that LXFI is able to prevent three known privilege-escalation vulnerabilities. Stress tests of a network driver module also show that isolating this module using LXFI does not hurt TCP throughput but reduces UDP throughput by 35%, and increases CPU utilization by 2.2-3.7x

In many cases, heterogeneous prices occur in price-taking environments. In empirical work, an aggregate price index is often created from such prices and used to explain aggregate supply and derived demands. We show that consistent aggregation places strong restrictions on functional forms which may be used to describe behaviour. Unlike the case of aggregation of consumer income (but similar to the case of aggregation of wages), these functional forms are inconsistent with standard microtheory.

This paper discusses the role of technology under the framework of Critical Technical Practice specifically in the form of constructing artefacts and deconstructing tools in order to produce what Philip Agre would describe as 'reflexive work of critique' (Agre, 1997:155). By presenting the activities and methods used in the teaching and shaping of undergraduate courses, this paper aims to show how technical objects, such as data, datasets, application programming interfaces and machine learning models, can be considered as discursive subjects, demonstrating pedagogical understanding across fields. The courses operate in the humanities tradition and take critical technical practice as a didactic approach, insofar as software and data are understood and manipulated on an instrumental level, while encouraging critical engagement and embodied reflection that bridge the technical and social/cultural domains. Within this pedagogical approach, critical is not only understood as a paradigm of rationality or quantitative, data-driven argumentation, but as adopting a critical position - that is, to research and reflect on the social structures and cultural phenomena entangled with digital objects, bodies, tools, methods and software production. By embracing work-in-progress and reflexive exploration, we aim to extend the notion of critical technical practice by unfolding how (de)constructing machines can be achieved beyond thinking of technology as neutral instrumentalisation. The challenge is how to find a balance, not only as researchers but as educators, unfolding aspects of both formality and functionality as well as questioning and understanding technology at a discursive and critical level. We argue that learning technical practice in an educational setting is not an end, but rather a means to question existing technological structures and create further changes in socio-technical systems.

Emerging out of Web 2.0 there have been almost breath-taking technological advances in the geospatial web spurred on by developments in neogeography and the inter-connectivity provided by published open-source application programming interfaces. In addition, the greater availability of location-intelligent devices, social media technologies and the advent of volunteered geographic information promises to further revolutionize traditionally conceived geospatial technologies and empower a world of spatially aware citizen sensors. Together, these new Web 2.0 geospatial platforms and citizen-generated geotagged media pose significant opportunities and challenges to the traditional geospatial framework of GIS and standards-based spatial databases, and to archaeology. The new Web 2.0 geospatial capabilities enable communities of stakeholders and interest groups to contribute, participate, and draw upon spatial data and mapping services formerly in the domain of expert geospatial and archaeological communities.

In certain business sectors adapting to modern and cost reducing technologies and service models can be still a challenge. This especially applies for health care related SME, such as hospitals, where cost reduction runs counter the need of being compliant to legal regulations and where the access control has to struggle against a diverse landscape of health care equipment accompanied by dynamic and complex role models. Outsourcing data storage and data processing seems not to reduce the complexity, rather bears the risks of reduced data availability, loss or abuse of data and can increase legal compliance risks and concerns. Since this applies for many SMEs, a common platform, such as an ecosystem, can help to lower the entrance barrier by regaining helpful management functionalities, standardized basic services and therefore push the adoption to modern cost reducing service consumption scenarios. In this paper a generic design pattern for realizing distributed authorization in an API ecosystem is presented. The pattern is applied within a research project, which aims to develop an ecosystem for trading and consuming services within demanding business sectors and reduce lock-in effects for both, service providers and consumers. The concept of Distributed Authorization is applied in a new complex multi entity use-case, where access policies for RESTful APIs can be designed flexible under consideration of service providers' and consumers' requirements which are enforced by a central trusted 3rd party provider.

application programming interfaces (APIs) often define protocols - restrictions on the order of client calls to API methods. API protocols are common and difficult to use, which has generated tremendous research effort in alternative specification, implementation, and verification techniques. However, little is understood about the barriers programmers face when using these APIs, and therefore the research effort may be misdirected. To understand these barriers better, we perform a two-part qualitative study. First, we study developer forums to identify problems that developers have with protocols. Second, we perform a think-aloud observational study, in which we systematically observe professional programmers struggle with these same problems to get more detail on the nature of their struggles and how they use available resources. In our observations, programmer time was spent primarily on four types of searches of the protocol state space. These observations suggest protocol-targeted tools, languages, and verification techniques will be most effective if they enable programmers to efficiently perform state search.

Location data is crucial in intelligent transportation systems (ITS) as evidenced in Transport for London, Belgium's STIB, and NEXTBUS in the United States. In order to provide real-time information on public buses, trams, and trains to citizens, databases and data warehouses were adapted to source and deliver traffic data in many end-to-end systems. In contrast, open systems were rarely studied and implemented for their security risks and proprietary dependencies. In this paper, we propose a real-time, secure data warehouse paired with specific application programming interfaces (APIs) to facilitate movement of data and demonstrate an open ecosystem for third-party developers to produce intelligent mobility solutions such as a public vehicle tracker and a time-of-arrival estimator. The resulting design and implementation show how simple APIs can be the foundation for an open ecosystem in ITS development.
