Nowadays there is an increasing interest in mobile application development. However, developers often disregard, or at least significantly adapt, existing software development processes to suit their purpose, given the existing specific constraints. Such adjustments can introduce variations and new trends in existing processes that in many occasions are not shared with the scientific community since there is no official documentation, thus justifying further research. In this paper, we present a study and characterization of current mobile application development processes based on a practical experience. We consider a set of real case studies to investigate the current development processes for mobile applications used by software development companies, as well as by independent developers. The result of the present study is the identification of mobile software development processes, namely agile approaches, and also of shortcomings in current methodologies applied in industry and academy, namely the lack of informed and experienced resources to develop mobile apps.

With the amazing success of PokemonGo, pervasive games have definitely caught the attention of the entire world. Their game experience is characterized by the fusion of real and virtual elements. In order to be able to extend the virtual world into the real one, such games have to access the mobile devices sensors like GPS and camera. For this reason, they are implemented as native or hybrid mobile applications. Contrary to this trend, in this paper we present Shoot Them All, a pervasive game implemented as a web application. In Shoot Them All, players have to hit the opponents, trying, at the same time, not to get hit. The battlefield is the real world, while the guns are virtual, as an extension of players' mobile devices. We were able to successfully developed such a game thanks to the availability of Javascript APIs that allow to access and manage device sensors. The success of this case study highlight how these technologies are mature enough, opening the door to web pervasive games.

Twitter is observed to be a very strong platform to reach more audience. The thoughts that are shared on twitter can have positive as well as negative impact. In this paper our focus is to find and provide some metrics to evaluate the spread of any tweet. This can be considered as the first step towards identifying the impact of any tweet. We assume that we have appropriate API's or web services to get required information regarding the tweet. We have taken some real time tweet to find the spread. In this work, the speed of spread is also captured. The speed aspect of a spread is found useful in further analysis of certain tweets under investigation.

This study explores the development of a portable multi-fields real-time system for detecting small hazardous objects using limited computational resources. The system integrates camera modules with the Micro Control Unit (MCU) as terminal devices and publishes data to the monitoring server via the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol. In order to enhance the performance of the monitoring system, this method utilizes the OpenVINO Runtime application programming interface (API) to accelerate model computations, thereby increasing the processing speed of the MobileNetV3 object recognition model. Despite the limitations of computing resources typical in consumer electronics, the implementation of this study validates that the proposed approach can enable instant detection of small hazardous objects across multiple fields using lightweight and low-bandwidth communication protocols, thereby enhancing the management of hazardous events.

APIs or application programming interfaces help distributed systems and microservices to expose their functionalities and serve as a means for communication among them. In contrast to a poorly designed API, a well-designed API is easy for users to understand and use. Thus, APIs with high-quality design are essential both for API providers and client developers. This paper aims to assess the linguistic design quality of APIs in distributed systems and microservices by automatically detecting good and poor design practices, commonly known as patterns and antipatterns, respectively. We rely on syntactic and semantic analyses for automatic assessment of the design quality of APIs using detection heuristics. Syntactic analysis involves analyzing the structure and syntax of the APIs, while semantic analysis involves analyzing API documentation, descriptions, and parameters. We achieved an overall accuracy of more than 93% in detecting patterns and antipatterns. Our detection results also suggest that antipatterns are prevalent in the APIs of distributed systems and microservices. Our findings will assist API developers in identifying poor design practices and improving the design quality of their APIs.

Background: application programming interfaces (APIs) are key to software reuse. Software developers can link functionality and behaviour found in other software with their own software by taking an API into use. However, figuring out how an API works is usually demanding, and may require that the developers spend a notable amount of time familiarizing themselves with the API. Good API documentation is of key importance to simplify this task. Objective: To present a comprehensive, unbiased overview of the state-of-the-art on tools and approaches for API documentation generation. Method: A systematic mapping study on published tools and approaches that can be used for generating API documentation, or for assisting in the API documentation process. Results: 36 studies on API documentation generation tools and approaches analyzed and categorized in a variety of ways. Among other things, the paper presents an overview of what kind of tools have been developed, what kind of documentation they generate, and what sources the documentation approaches require. Conclusion: Out of the identified approaches, many contribute to API documentation in the areas of natural language documentation and code examples and templates. Many of the approaches contribute to ease API users' understanding and learning of the API, but also to the maintenance and generation of API documentation. Most of the approaches are automatic, simplifying the API documentation generation notably, under the assumption that relevant sources for the generation are available. Most of the API documentation approaches are evaluated either by exercise of the approach followed by analysis of the results, or by empirical evaluation methods.

Despite the rapid progress of the techniques for image classification, video annotation has remained a challenging task. Automated video annotation would be a breakthrough technology, enabling users to search within the videos. Recently, Google introduced the Cloud Video Intelligence API for video analysis. As per the website, the system can be used to "separate signal from noise, by retrieving relevant information at the video, shot or perframe" level. A demonstration website has been also launched, which allows anyone to select a video for annotation. The API then detects the video labels (objects within the video) as well as shot labels (description of the video events over time). In this paper, we examine the usability of the Google's Cloud Video Intelligence API in adversarial environments. In particular, we investigate whether an adversary can subtly manipulate a video in such a way that the API will return only the adversary-desired labels. For this, we select an image, which is different from the video content, and insert it, periodically and at a very low rate, into the video. We found that if we insert one image every two seconds, the API is deceived into annotating the video as if it only contained the inserted image. Note that the modification to the video is hardly noticeable as, for instance, for a typical frame rate of 25, we insert only one image per 50 video frames. We also found that, by inserting one image per second, all the shot labels returned by the API are related to the inserted image. We perform the experiments on the sample videos provided by the API demonstration website and show that our attack is successful with different videos and images.

APIs can be classified according to the programming domains (e.g., GUIs, databases, collections, or security) that they address. Such classification is vital in searching repositories (e.g., the Maven Central Repository for Java) and for understanding the technology stack used in software projects. We apply hierarchical clustering to a curated suite of Java APIs to compare the computed API clusters with preexisting API classifications. Clustering entails various parameters (e.g., the choice of IDF versus LSI versus LDA). We describe the corresponding variability in terms of a feature model. We exercise all possible con gurations to determine the maximum correlation with respect to two baselines: i) a smaller suite of APIs manually classified in previous research; ii) a larger suite of APIs from the Maven Central Repository, thereby taking advantage of crowd-sourced classification while relying on a threshold-based approach for identifying important APIs and versions thereof, subject to an API dependency analysis on GitHub. We discuss the configurations found in this way and we examine the influence of particular features on the correlation between computed clusters and baselines. To this end, we also leverage interactive exploration of the parameter space and the resulting dendrograms. In this manner, we can also identify issues with the use of classifiers (e.g., missing classifiers) in the baselines and limitations of the clustering approach.
