Regularized two-stage submodular maximization under streaming

In the problem of maximizing regularized two-stage submodular functions in streams, we assemble a family ■ of m functions each of which is submodular and is visited in a streaming style that an element is visited for only once. The aim is to choose a subset S of size at most ■ from the element stream ■, so as to maximize the average maximum value of these functions restricted on S with a regularized modular term. The problem can be formally cast as ■, where c:■ is a non-negative modular function and ■ is a non-negative monotone non-decreasing submodular function. The well-studied regularized problem of ■ is exactly a special case of the above regularized two-stage submodular maximization by setting m=1 and ■=k. Although f(·)-c(·) is submodular, it is potentially negative and non-monotone and admits no constant multiplicative factor approximation. Therefore, we adopt a slightly weaker notion of approximation which constructs S such that f(S)-c(S)≥ρ·f(O)-c(O) holds against optimum solution O for some ρ∈(0, 1). Eventually, we devise a streaming algorithm by employing the distorted threshold technique, achieving a weaker approximation ratio with ρ=0.2996 for the discussed regularized two-stage model.

In the process of generating conventional FDTD meshes, the model voxelization often takes up too many computational resources. To address this issue, this paper is devoted to presenting an effective mesh voxelization technique with adaptive partitioning and non-uniform grid generation. In this scheme, the entire computational domain is divided into subintervals based on the model's demarcation points, and the mesh generation parameters can be adaptively adjusted according to the information of each sub-interval in order to generate a reasonable non-uniform mesh. Besides, the scheme corrects mesh generation conditions for voxels across the model interface and records their conformal information, resolving the staircase approximation issue caused by traditional voxelization. The proposed mesh generation technique can minimize the number of grids while ensuring the geometrical accuracy of the model. The mesh quality is further validated by applied to meshing some typical objects in computational electromagnetics problems.

This paper looks at the use of the hunting tooth (HT) time synchronous average (TSA) to improve fault detection on gears. HT analysis is based on the period at which two damaged teeth in a gear mesh. The HT frequency tends to be low, requiring a long acquisition to calculate the TSA. Because of the long acquisition, the HT TSA may improve the signal-to-noise of some gear fault pairs, such as seen in the epicyclic gearbox planet/ring gear mesh. This study develops two Condition Indicators (CI) based on the HT TSA from two different data sets. The first data set has been used to quantify the performance of gear algorithms using statistical separability. The second data set is from an OH-58 helicopter gearbox that was seeded with a damaged planet gear. Planet gears are typically difficult to analyze as if only one planet has damage, and the fault may be masked by the other good planets, making early fault detection difficult. The proposed CI showed good fault detection and trends for both data sets and was superior for the epicyclic gearbox. The performance of the HT TSA and new CIs is quantified relative to other gear CIs and validated using gear fractography crack length.

This paper explores the use of Genetic algorithms (GA) and Customized Estimation of Distribution algorithms (CEDA) to dynamically design enemy waves in a Tower Defense game. By varying population sizes (5 to 50), the study evaluates each algorithm’s efficiency and effectiveness in generating balanced and challenging enemy waves. Fitness scores are based on the severity of attacks on the player's base and the distance traveled by each monster. Results show that both GA and CEDA are capable of producing diverse and challenging gameplay experiences, with optimal performance achieved using moderate population sizes. This AI-driven approach introduces a new dimension to Tower Defense games, enabling dynamic and adaptive level design that enhances engagement and replayability.

Images captured in an underwater environment suffer from color degradation due to light scattering and absorption. This is a major obstacle to the effective utilization of underwater images, and accurate color restoration techniques are required. To address this issue, a physics-based color restoration algorithm, SUCRe (Scene’s 3D structure for Underwater Color Restoration), has been proposed. However, the SUCRe algorithm requires excessive computational resources as well as long processing *** this study, we aimed to solve this problem by implementing the SUCRe algorithm on an FPGA to improve processing speed. In particular, it was found that the parameter optimization process within the algorithm was a bottleneck and required a large amount of processing time. Therefore, we accelerated this process by implementing the optimization process to the *** a result, compared to the original Python implementation, the optimization process was approximately 8 times faster in the C language implementation and approximately 190 times faster in the FPGA *** color restoration accuracy, we confirmed that the restoration performance on an underwater image dataset (including a color chart) was comparable to or better than conventional methods. This result indicates that we successfully shortened the overall processing time without sacrificing restoration performance, and suggests that further acceleration of the entire algorithm is possible by optimizing other processes within the *** future work, we plan to focus on speeding up and optimizing depth information acquisition methods, which are closely related to the entire algorithm, to further enhance the algorithm’s speed and improve restoration accuracy. Ultimately, we aim to realize a system capable of performing real-time color restoration at the point of capture.

The complex and dynamic environment of mines leads to time-variability and uncertainty in channel propagation, which affects the stability and reliability of Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X)communication in mine networks. Channel prediction can help mitigate these issues. Introducing reconfigurable intelligence surface (RIS) into the mine V2X system can enhance signal coverage and quality in the complex mine environment. To address the issue of long-term error accumulation in existing channel prediction models, this paper analyzes the prediction error of channel state information (CSI) in mine V2X systems. It was observed that the error distribution exhibits characteristics of an approximate normal distribution, revealing its predictability. Utilizing this characteristic, this paper proposes an error correction strategy to suppress long-term error accumulation during the prediction process. Furthermore, an adaptive method for optimizing RIS phases is designed based on the Snow Ablation Optimizer. Specifically, this paper utilizes a metaheuristic optimization algorithm and deep learning techniques to propose a mine V2X channel prediction model that incorporates the error correction strategy. Experimental results show that optimizing the RIS phase can effectively enhance channel gain, and the mine V2X channel prediction model incorporating the error correction strategy can effectively suppress cumulative errors during the prediction process, thereby improving prediction accuracy.

This paper investigates a data-locality-aware task assignment and scheduling problem aimed at minimizing job completion times for distributed job executions. Without prior knowledge of future job arrivals, we propose an optimal balanced task assignment algorithm (OBTA) that minimizes the completion time of each arriving job. We significantly reduce OBTA’s computational overhead by narrowing the search space of potential solutions. Additionally, we extend an approximate algorithm known as water-filling (WF) and nontrivially prove that its approximation factor equals the number of task groups in the job assignment. We also design a novel heuristic, replica-deletion (RD), which outperforms WF. To further reduce the completion time of each job, we expand the problem to include job reordering, where we adjust the order of outstanding jobs following the shortest-estimated-time-first policy. The primary school stage is the first step for children to enter the school life, which plays a crucial role in the subsequent academic development. This paper studies the teacher role influence based on Generative Adversarial Network. We use generative adversarial networks to deal with complex data. A fusion data enhancement scheme is proposed to make the generator fit the distribution of actual samples by training the generation adversarial network and generating samples approximating the distribution by the input random noise. Combined with the traditional data enhancement method of image flipping, the enhancement algorithm can enrich the diversity of samples, balance the distribution of samples, and expand the distribution range of samples in the feature space, which is conducive to improving the algorithm’s performance.

This paper presents an outlier-robust adaptive filtering algorithm based on the adaptive projected subgradient method (APSM). The proposed algorithm is derived from a cost function involving the Moreau enhancement of the distance function to a hyperslab which permits a prespecified amount of estimation residuals. A data-dependent penalty is also exploited to preserve the overall convexity of the instantaneous cost with a minimal amount of estimation bias. Our instantaneous cost function involves a constant term to make the minimum of the cost be exactly zero so that the monotone approximation property of APSM holds with a fixed step size. Numerical examples show remarkable robustness of the proposed algorithm for both white and colored input signals.

Fast-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling improves spectrum efficiency (SE) by compressing the symbol interval and is a promising communication scheme. However, high compression rate means serious inter-symbol interference (ISI), so researchers have been exploring various low-complexity and efficient equalization methods. Delayed feedback sequence estimation (DDFSE) achieves a good tradeoff between complexity and equalization effect, and can achieve better equalization effect with a prefilter, but no one has compared which prefilter has the best BER performance for FTN signaling. We proposed a new prefilter based on unbiased maximum signal-to-interference-to-noise ratio (U-SINR) prefilter and mean square whitened matched filter (MS-WMF), and compared it with three other prefilters to find the best prefilter for medium and low time-squeezing factors. The simulation results show that in the vast majority of cases, we recommend MS-WMF, but new prefilter can be used to obtain better equalization effects when the signal-to-noise ratio is high and the time-squeezing factors is low.
