Cultural heritage (CH) relevant importance to society leads to the need for historical, architectural, historical, and structural documentation. Such documents are necessary for the effective conservation and restoration of heritage buildings. Digitalization and documentation have been challenging and multidisciplinary topics for cultural heritage (CH) involving new technologies for information capture. 3D architectural documentation of existing heritage buildings is possible due to digital survey technologies joined with BIM methodology. The José de Alencar Theatre was surveyed with an integrated approach using a laser scanner and photogrammetry. BIM methodology based on digital scanning and image-based data was applied to generate a 3D model and extensive BIM library. The results indicate that a reliable BIM model of the José de Alencar theatre can be done, generating useful documentation and information on the historical construction based on the laser scanner and photogrammetry data with architectural geometry well-detailed. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

One essential approach in preserving architectural heritage is the documentation of building geometries and their sites are thoroughly photographed of existing buildings. For instance, an automated detection of the locations and the extraction of geometry information of the buildings are intrinsic attributes of the architectural design of building interiors and exteriors in cultural heritage documentation and preservation. In this study, contributions of remotely sensed images to detect the sites and shapes of the buildings based on shadow analysis were evaluated. The aim of this paper is to develop an approach to assist in recording and documenting the external geometry of historic buildings and their real location supplying much ease and time-saving in protection projects of cultural heritage. A distinctive merit of the proposed approach is its ability to document the spatial distribution of the detecting buildings by extracting the graphic coordinates of their corners without any additional data. Our experiments demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach on two cases, including the architectural documentation of external edges, shape, size, site, orientation, and coordinates. Thus, our new approach offers a tool to document architectural and cultural heritage which can help in capturing and recording all the relevant data and information, both in visual and written format.

The practice of museology has a broad discourse based upon ideological, sociological, technological and architectural disciplines. This thesis will only cover two of these disciplines, architecture and technology, while analysing the museum environment as it is believed that museums are one of the most independent architectural spaces in both design and narration. Today, the field of virtual museums becomes very dynamic due to technological innovations and it offers different conceptual ideas for architecture and museography. Museums that are designed using virtual applications function in-between real and virtual spaces. Therefore, this study aims at focusing on virtual museums as a new space for architectural documentation and display. In this context, an unusual museum project at "METU Lodgings", House No. 05 will be used as a tool and subject that illustrates the relation between museum architecture and contemporary technology. House No. 05 was designed as a temporary museum, however it suggests a permanency. This thesis can highlight the influence of a virtual website a museum although it no longer exists.

Updating the documentation of a historic building: a case study of the José de Alencar theatre

Valorisation of heritage buildings can greatly be benefited from the update of the existing documentation. BIM (Building Information Modelling) can create a model able to be enriched by new information according to the dynamism of the historical building over time. This work aims to update the documentation of the iconic José de Alencar theatre (Fortaleza city—Brazil). The methodology consisted of three main steps: the cataloguing of existing drawings and old pictures;the performing of a digital survey and the development of a 3D BIM model of the theatre. An integrated approach using a laser scanner and UAV photogrammetry technology was performed. From the results, an update of the documentation of the theatre over time and a 3D BIM model, with a higher level of information and details, were obtained. Such complete updated graphical information of the heritage building may be useful for future maintenance and restoration projects. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Context: architectural views serve as fundamental artefacts for designing and communicating software architectures. In the context of collaborative software development, producing sound architectural documentation, where architectural views play a central role, is a crucial aspect for effective teamwork. Despite their importance, the use of architectural views in open-source projects to date remains only marginally explored. Goal: We aim at conducting a comprehensive analysis on an extensive corpus of open-source architectural views. The goal is to understand (i) what the "history" of architectural views is, (ii) how architectural views are represented, and (iii) what architectural views are used for in the context of open-source projects. Methods: We leverage a software repository mining process to systematically construct a dataset of 15k architectural views. Then, we perform (i) a quantitative analysis on the metadata of all 15k views and (ii) a qualitative analysis on a statistically-relevant sample of 373 views. Results: Most projects rely on a single architectural view, which is often used to document a medium or high level description of the architecture. Views are usually created at either the beginning or at the end of a project, are rarely updated, and tend to be maintained by a single contributor. Views usually adopt an informal colored notation without a supporting legend and frequently report technologies used. Deployment and control flow are the most recurrent viewpoints, and commonly cover concerns related to software maintainability and functional suitability. Conclusion: The state of the practice about architectural views in open-source software systems seems to favor informal descriptions. Despite this, the effort needed to create views might hinder keeping views up to date, and a common syntactic ground between viewpoints seems hard to find. The inherent complexity of a software system of any size requires intentional design of the architecture. Numerous tools have been developed so support recording architecture decisions, but generally architecture decisions remain inadequately documented. Architecture decisions are generally recorded as text, but the ideas do not lend themselves to textual representation. One obstacle to documenting architecture decisions is the inherent difficulty of capturing the decisions themselves. It can be difficult to remember to document a decision when it is made. We propose focusing on recording "Notable Decisions", those that require explicit documentation. We identified characteristics of such decisions. We conducted a limited controlled experiment to investigate the nature of notable decisions. Preliminary results indicate that most of the decisions made were obvious, but some were notable and needed explicit documentation, suggesting that focusing on documenting notable decisions may be useful.

Nineteenth-Century Conservation of Byzantine Heritage in the Ottoman Empire: The Significance of the 1893 Istanbul Historic Peninsula Fortification Map

City walls are essential urban elements contributing to the identity of historical cities. Their significance as a component of a city's image is reflected on historical city maps, revealing the physical traces of urban history. The Istanbul Historic Peninsula, a multi-layered historical city centre surrounded by Byzantine-period walls, has been represented on different maps and drawings by Ottoman and foreign experts ever since the fifteenth century. One of the first architectural documentation studies focusing on these city walls is the Historic Peninsula Fortification (HPF) Map, dated 1893. Archival and literature research shows that the map is a copy of the Nineteenth-Century Istanbul Map, also called the Ayverdi Map. In this paper, we discuss the value of the 1893 Istanbul HPF Map as a historical document, its properties, and its historical and cultural significance for documenting the city walls for conservation purposes in the Ottoman period.

Spiritual and Spatial Significance of Choedrak Monastery in the Cultural Geography of Bhutan

Ancient monasteries in Bhutan are an immense asset to the country both in terms of tangible architecture and intangible cultural and religious values. Initially, they were built owing to the interconnected spatial and spiritual significance of the particular place and its concerned divine master. These monasteries have prolifically aided in the propagation of Buddhism as well as defining the very architecture of Bhutan. However, due to the unavailability of rigorous research about it, many monasteries are off the radar of government and scholars with some of them in dire need of restoration. The paper attempts to document and highlight the spatial and spiritual significance of Tharpaling, particularly the Choedrak monastery, which is located in Chumey village under Bumthang district, Bhutan. Having been impregnated sacredness by the visit of Guru Rinpoche (precious master), the subsequent visit of Gyalwa Lorepa reassured the impetus for the transformation of a mere cave into a monastery complex. In conjunction with it, Choedrak is revered as one of the four sacred Drak (cliff) temples of Guru Rinpoche and attracts tourists as well as locals to receive blessings and for extended retreat purposes. architecturally, the main temple of the Choedrak is a resemblance of a typical monastery architecture of Bhutan incorporating traditional features such as whitewashed tapering stone wall adorned with wooden windows, floating-like roof, and colorful elegance of the interiors. The current study is intended to further signify its place in the cultural heritage dictionary of Bhutan and consequently harness opportunities from the relevant agencies such as the Division for Conservation of Heritage Sites for appropriate and sound solutions for the preservation of the monastery.

Virtual reconstruction of the historic city of Al-Zubarah in Qatar

The ruins of al-Zubarah hold within them valuable information for historians and anthropologists to know the society that once lived in it. Thanks to contemporary modelling methods, and a wealth of recent scholarship and documentation of the ancient city, we can virtually reconstruct its architecture. This paper shows the value of virtual reconstruction by building a model of al-Zubarah base primarily on Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) database and present the analytical and practical methods we adopt to do so. By reconstructing the city, we uncover its unique urban form, architectural language, and a glimpse of life once there. Because remaining ruins can only tell us so much about the city, we rely on a convergence of diverse sources from archaeological documentation to historical scholarship. The project has two stages: creating a volumetric model of the city and detailing four significant buildings, which are the mosque, palace, towers, and market. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

The village of Dereuzunyer located in the Rahmanlar Valley of the Kucuk Menderes Basin is a settlement that is a natural extension of a topography shaped by a joint contribution of culture and nature. It has preserved the authenticity and integrity of its traditional rural fabric and gives detailed information about the architectural approach, building technology, construction techniques, landscape features and traditional craftsmanship of past rural life. While some of the cultural assets in the settlement containing detailed information about the rural lifestyle of the past have survived to date despite the harsh natural conditions, the remainder have been neglected, become dilapidated, and fallen into ruin over time due to lack of maintenance by the local people because of rumors about the possible dam project and expropriations in progress. After completion of the Rahmanlar Dam in 2019, the cultural landscape values of Dereuzunyer will be lost irretrievably. This article aims to make a contribution to creating awareness about avoiding such losses, not only by introducing the non-renewable values of Dereuzunyer, by documentation of its historical development, its traditional architecture, its traditional building types, its construction techniques, and its plan and facade features, but also by promoting and interpreting its lost cultural heritage.
