One of the key factor for a capillary adoption of smart grid approach in residential or commercial environments is the availability of low cost devices able to carry on required measurement and control tasks. The development and commercialization of low cost smart meters will be an important field of manufacturing in the next future. On the other hand, in addition to simple measurement of energy flows for billing purposes, there is a great interest in customers and utilities in characterize the energy in terms of level of quality, but this requires the calculation of various indexes and the performing of even complex analyses. This leads to an increase of the requirements of both analogical and digital devices composing the smart meters. Great advantages from this point of view come from the availability of more and more powerful microcontrollers at low cost. Analogical devices, such as current and voltage transducers, for power quality assessment over a wide frequency range at low cost still remain a critical aspect. These paper presents an implementation of a smart meter with low cost commercial microcontroller board (arduino), equipped with a prototype of low cost combined voltage and current transducer designed as shield for the considered microcontroller board. Simulations and experimental characterization of the prototype are shown

The Emotiv (TM) electroencephalogram (EEG) headset is a non-invasive brain-computer interface with 14 EEG channels that was used to record neural responses to stimuli in 5 male and 5 female participants. The stimuli included instructions (presented in both visual or auditory format successively) of 'right' or 'left.' Participants raised their right or left arm in response to the instruction given. The subjects were stimulated and their data was recorded using a scenario generated in OpenViBE (TM). Specifically, the Graz Motor BCI Stimulator algorithm was used to generate the number and frequency of auditory and visual stimulations. In addition, using EEGlab T in conjunction with Matlab (R), the electrodes most important during visual and auditory stimulation were identified. This aided in the development of processing real-time EEG signals from the Emotiv (TM) EEG headset. Filtering and feature extraction were accomplished via the SIMULINK (R) signal processing toolbox. An arduino (TM) microcontroller acted as a connection between the Mecha Te Hand (TM) and the Emotiv (TM) EEG headset.

In this paper, hardware development, software coding using embedded C programming language for an arduino ATMEGA microcontroller, calibration of electronic control unit (ECU) was tested for a research engine to control the fuel injection flow rate with respect to the suction top dead center (TDC) of the engine. The system could control the fuel flow rate with a variable reluctance sensor, an arduino microcontroller and a solenoid operated injector in a closed loop domain with a varying pulse width modulator controlled exclusively by the engine operator. The injection flow rates were measured and calibrated with the calculated fuel flow rates for different equivalence ratios (O) of the engine. The results showed a very close match between the measured fuel flow rates after calibration and the calculated fuel flow rates at 1500 RPM. The gasoline mass flow rate error was reduced from 40% to 3.25% by compensating the ON/OFF time of the pulse width.

Each year, the number of stolen vehicle is on the rise. Usually, to prevent theft, a physical type countermeasure is used such as padlock, disk break lock and other more which is a preventive action but it is not enough safe. The objective of this study is to create a controllable system that can display the location of a vehicle using Global position system (GPS) to pin point the location and Global System for Mobile (GSM) as a mean for communicating with the vehicle for ease of finding after a theft attempt. The system is made to test the accuracy of the location that is send to the user when the vehicle is in motion and stationary in the city and suburb. The system is made by combining a micro controller with GPS and GSM, then comparing it with other similar device available in the market like Garmin and a reference website to find the radius of error. The study of proposed device begins by studying IEEE journal about alternative product and the vehicle itself. The hardware and program development is done by research and trial and error as the controller do not interact with both module at the same time, after successfully programming both module, it is combined into a single program with addition of interrupt program. The experiment is done in three set of tests so that the system accuracy can be determine when stationary and in motion on vehicle, output controlling is the test to determine if the controller can be made into anti-theft system. The result of the test concludes that the system can provide standard GPS coordinate when requested via Short Message Service (SMS). The system can also be used to control an actuator.

In this paper, a respiratory carbon dioxide (CO2) measurement device has been designed and introduced for home monitoring applications. Typically, peak flow meter is used to monitor the severity of asthma. In order to use this device, the patient needs to inhale a full, deep breath in, and then blast it out as hard and fast as possible until there is no more air left to expel from his/her lungs. Besides that, children below 6 years old are unable to perform this test. Therefore, capnograph has recently been used as a new method to overcome such limitations. The problem is that capnographs in the market are too expensive, bulky, and not affordable to be used as a home monitoring device. Hence, in this preliminary work, we introduce a new and low-cost portable tool which utilize MG-811 sensor to detect CO2. The output signal (concentration of CO2) is then processed using arduino and be sent to the PC through universal serial bus (USB) port for further analysis. In this paper, we present our preliminary simulation results that were obtained using Proteus 8 software.

Computer numerical control (CNC) machines play a central role in modern manufacturing. CNC machining skills provide high-paying manufacturing jobs to graduates of engineering and technology. Hands-on laboratory instruction is essential for effective student learning in the area of CAD/CAM/Manufacturing Technology, but the high cost of commercial and even educational CNC machines like mills and lathes constrains the scope of instruction in CNC machining. In this paper, an inexpensive two-axis lathe prototype is developed using off-the-shelf materials and components, open source hardware, and open source CAM and CNC software. The machine can be adapted for large scale use in engineering colleges, polytechnics, and industrial training institutes (ITIs). To make the CNC learning even more affordable, accessible and less resource-intensive, a web-based learning platform for using the lathe is developed.

Sourcing skilled labour for agricultural sector has become a tedious job in today's time. There is a need for mechanization of the farming process in order to cope with the lack of manpower. The need of the hour is automation in the field of agriculture. This paper describes an intuitive mechanized robot, which would eliminate the need of manually climbing the Arecanut tree in order to harvest the nut itself as well as spraying the neighboring tree. Technology which is economically suited for the job specified, safe and which can be easily understood and implemented by the farmers is the goal of the final system. The robot is divided into two units. While one unit clamps itself to the tree the other one lifts itself vertically which is done using two X-bar mechanisms mounted on opposite sides. The X-bar mechanism can compress and expand which is achieved with the use of high torque DC motors with encoders. An onboard battery is the power source. The clamping involves a 4-bar mechanism. The robot has semi-autonomous control and makes the use of arduino microcontroller.

To minimize the occurrence of vehicle accidents due to an eye or hand movements while driving, an automatic vehicle human-voice-based safety control is proposed in this paper. The design is implemented using an arduino microcontroller. One of the most important safety control features is the automotive speed control(ASC). In this safety control function, which prevents a vehicle sudden hit, the necessary action is issued based on the vehicle-tovehicle distance measure. To prevent the driver from attention withdraw and maintain a proper road and situation focus(as especially is the case at night), several other automated safety control operations are provided(i.e., radio, flasher, left flasher, right flasher, wipers, drive, and stop). These features are controlled according to human voice commands using an Easy VR module. The proposed model has been designed, built, and tested providing suitable results as desired.

This paper presents a basic idea of using computer controlled blocks to build an autonomous system of blocks capable of assembling themselves into various configurations. At the beginning, mechanical components are briefly described. The focus of this paper is on the control of a single block, and the interaction between two blocks. Different processes with different circuit diagrams are shown in details. Several pictures are taken under testing condition and indicate the processes and the results.
