The H.264 video compression standard uses a context-adaptive binary arithmetic coder (CABAC) as an entropy coding mechanism. While the coder provides excellent compression efficiency, it is computationally demanding. On typical general-purpose processors, it can take up to hundreds of cycles to encode a single bit. In this paper, we propose an architecture for a CABAC, encoder that can easily be incorporated into system-on-chip designs for H.264 compression. The CABAC is inherently, serial and we divide the problem into several stages to derive a design that can provide a throughput of two cycles per encoded bit. The engine proposed is capable of handling binarization of the syntactical elements and provides the coded bit-stream via a first-in first-out buffer. The design is implemented on an Altera FPGA platform that can run at 50 MHz enabling a 25 Mbps encoding rate.

Over the past years, the ever-growing trend on data storage demand, more specifically for "cold" data (i.e. rarely accessed), has motivated research for alternative systems of data storage. Because of its biochemical characteristics, synthetic DNA molecules are now considered as serious candidates for this new kind of storage. This paper introduces a novel arithmetic coder for DNA data storage, and presents some results on a lossy JPEG 2000 based image compression method adapted for DNA data storage that uses this novel coder. The DNA coding algorithms presented here have been designed to efficiently compress images, encode them into a quaternary code, and finally store them into synthetic DNA molecules. This work also aims at making the compression models better fit the problematic that we encounter when storing data into DNA, namely the fact that the DNA writing, storing and reading methods are error prone processes. The main take away of this work is our arithmetic coder and it's integration into a performant image codec.

In the paper an effective context based lossless coding technique is presented. Three principal and one auxiliary contexts are defined. Cumulated predictor error combining 8 bias estimators is calculated. An adaptive context arithmetic coder is introduced. It is shown experimentally that the new technique is time-effective while it outperforms the well known methods having reasonable time complexity, and is inferior only to extremely computationally complex ones. http://***/stamp/***?tp=&arnumber=4604363

A dual-symbol arithmetic coder architecture with reduced memory is presented for JPEG2000. Eight process elements are used for the prediction of probability interval A. And the use of a dedicated Probability Estimation Table decreases the internal memory greatly. Upon FPGA synthesis results, the architecture's throughput can reach 96.60M context symbols per second with an internal memory size of 1509 bits.

arithmetic coding provides an effective mechanism for removing redundancy in the encoding of data. We show how arithmetic coding works and describe an efficient implementation that uses table lookup as a fast alternative to arithmetic operations. The reduced-precision arithmetic has a provably negligible effect on the amount of compression achieved. We can speed up the implementation further by use of parallel processing. We discuss the role of probability models and how they provide probability information to the arithmetic coder. We conclude with perspectives on the comparative advantages and disadvantages of arithmetic coding.

Adaptive arithmetic coders sometimes exhibit vvnonstationary symbol probabilities when coding digital halftone images with neighborhood-template models. If these nonstationary probabilities vary nonrandomly, the variations can be tracked robustly when each context derived from the coding model is expanded by conditioning on previously coded values for that model context.

Motivated by Shapiro's embedded zerotree wavelet (EZW) coding and Taubman and Zakhor's layered zero coding (LZC), we propose a layered discrete cosine transform (DCT) image compression scheme, which generates sn embedded bit stream for DCT coefficients according to their importance, The new method allows progressive image transmission and simplifies the rate-control problem. In addition to these functionalities, it provides a substantial rate-distortion improvement over the JPEG standard when the bit rates become low. For example, we observe a bit rate reduction with respect to tho JPEG Huffman and arithmetic coders by about 60% and 20%, respectively, for a bit rate around 0.1 b/p.

Design and Analysis of System on a Chip Encoder for JPEG2000

Much work has been performed on optimizing the throughput of the block coding system within JPEG2000. However, the question remains as to whether providing parallel simple block coders provides a cheaper method of increasing throughput than complicated optimized block coders. We present the analysis and results for a system on a chip (SoC) software/hardware codesign platform, for parallel coding in JPEG2000 compression standard. We design both a simple and a high performance, optimized peripheral encoder as a hardware accelerator for the JPEG2000 SoC encoding system. The system is implemented on an Altera NIOS II processor with flexible integrated peripheral. We show that there are optimum numbers of parallel block coders and scheduling granularity per row of codeblocks, and that parallel optimized encoders outperform parallel simple encoders. We also demonstrate that the block coding system becomes work starved rather than memory blocked when many parallel coders are present, indicating a discrete wavelet transform bottleneck.

A fast coding method for distortion-free data hiding in high dynamic range image

Reversible data hiding (RDH) technique allows the original cover to be lossless restored after the secret message is extracted, and high dynamic range (HDR) images are becoming more and more popular. We found that the existing RDH schemes for HDR image will cause serious stream expansion, which means that the storage size of the cover HDR image will expand. Noticing that we proposed a fast coding method named reverse-Golomb code for message embedding in all-zero cover to reduce the number of the alteration of pixel's status, and thus reduce the stream expansion of cover HDR images. The experimental results show the superiority of our method.
