The intention of data compression is to promote the storage and delivery of big images with excellent compression ratio and least distortion. Moreover, the number of internet user is growing day by day speedily. Therefore, the transfer of data is being another significant concern. The storage and the use of an uncompressed picture are very costly and time-consuming. There are many techniques such as arithmetic coding, Run-length coding, Huffman coding, Shannon-Fano coding used to compress an image. Compression of a picture using the state-of-the-art techniques has a high impact. However, The compression ratio and transfer speed do not satisfy the current demand. This article proposes a new histogram alternation based lossy image compression using Base-2 coding. It increases the probabilities of an image by doing a little bit of change to its pixels level which helps to reduce code-word. This algorithm uses less storage space and works at high-speed to encode and decode an image. Average code length, compression ratio, mean square error and pick signal to noise ratio are used to estimate this method. The proposed method demonstrates better performance than the state-of-the art techniques.

Conventional music coders, based on a modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT) suffer greatly when lowering their bit-rate and delay. In particular, tonal music signals are penalized by short analysis windows and the variable length coding of the quantized MDCT coefficients demands a significant amount of bits for coding the harmonic structure. For solving such an issue, the paper proposes a frequency-domain harmonic model aiming to amend the probability model of the variable length coding of the quantized MDCT coefficients. The new model was combined successfully with an envelope based arithmetic coding at rate lower than 10 kbps, and with a context based arithmetic coding at higher bit rates in the recent 3 GPP EVS (Enhanced Voice Services) codec standard. Objective and subjective quality tests indicate that the proposed harmonic model enhances the quality of music for low-delay audio coding.

AVS3 is a newly proposed video coding standard by the Audio Video coding Standard Workgroup, demonstrating higher compression efficiency than the High Efficiency Video coding standard. Advanced entropy coding is one of the performance bottlenecks of the AVS3 standard video encoder due to the strong data dependency in its arithmetic coding process. A novel arithmetic encoding hardware structure is presented in this paper, and as we know, this is the first paper on AVS3 AEC hardware implementation. Firstly, we select and apply the typical optimization schemes adopted in HEVC context-based adaptive binary arithmetic coding designs. Secondly, Utilizing the unique characteristics of AVS3 AEC, we propose mathematical reordering, variable-clock-cycle range updating and variable-clock-cycle context modeling methods to optimize the critical path. Our design can encode 2.6457 bins per clock cycle, and the corresponding throughput is 3131 Mbin/s in Globalfoundries 28nm process. Compared with the basic anchor structure, it has obtained a performance improvement of 319% and can meet the 8k@120fps ultra-high-definition video encoding requirements.

With the growing presence of high definition video content on battery-operated handheld devices such as camera phones, digital still cameras, digital camcorders, and personal media players, it is becoming ever more important that video compression be power efficient. A popular form of entropy coding called Context-Based Adaptive Binary arithmetic coding (CABAC) provides high coding efficiency but has limited throughput. This can lead to high operating frequencies resulting in high power dissipation. This paper presents a novel parallel CABAC scheme which enables a throughput increase of N-fold (depending on the degree parallelism), reducing the frequency requirement and expected power consumption of the coding engine. Experiments show that this new scheme (with N=2) can deliver similar to 2x throughput improvement at a cost of 0.76% average increase in bit-rate or equivalently a decrease in average PSNR of 0.025dB on five 720p resolution video clips when compared with H.264/AVC.

We propose a novel compression technique on signs of DCT coefficients. The proposed technique utilizes a high correlation among pixels at boundaries of a current block and those of neighboring blocks and estimates the original signs. It encodes the difference between the original coefficient signs and the estimated signs. We also propose a speeding up technique for the estimation, utilizing concepts of Gray code and transform matrix decomposition. Compared to JM16.2, the proposed technique reduces 10% bitrate in sign bits of DCT coefficients and achieves 1% BD-bitrate reduction in total bitstream. With the speeding up technique, complexities increase only 8% and 5% on an encoder and a decoder side, respectively.

This paper discusses the most recent trends in the reversible intraframe compression of grayscale images. With reference to a spatial DPCM scheme,prediction, either linar or nonlinear, may be accomplished in a space-varying fashion following two main strategies: adaptive, i.e., with predictors recalculated at each pixel position, and classified, in which image blocks, or pixels are preliminarily labeled into a number of statistical classes, for which optimum MMSE predictors are calculated. A trade-off between the above two strategies is proposed. It relies on a classified linear-regression prediction obtained through fuzzy techniques, followed by context-based modeling of the outcome prediction errors, to enhance entropy coding. The present scheme is a reworking of a fuzzy encoder previously presented by the authors. Now, predictors, instead of pixel intensity patterns, are fuzzy-clustered to find out, optimized MMSE prediction classes, and a novel membership function measuring the fitness of prediction is adopted. A thorough performances comparison with the most advanced methods in the literature highlights advantages, and drawbacks as well, of the fuzzy approach.

The EZW and Fractal coding were researched and simulated in this paper. And two drawbacks were discovered in these algorithm:the coding time is too long and the effect of reconstructed image is not ideal. Therefore, The paper studied the wavelet transformation in the fractal coding application, The wavelet coefficients of an image present two characteristics when the image is processed by wavelet transform: first characteristic is that the energy of an image is strongly concentrated in low frequency sub-image, second characteristic is that there is a similarity between the same direction in high frequency sub-images but the fractal coding essence was precisely uses the similarity of wavelet transform image. The paper designed one kind of new Image Compression based on Fractal coding in wavelet domain. The theoretical analysis and the simulation experiment indicated that, to some extent the method can reduce the coding time and reduce the MSE and enhance compression ratio of the reconstructed image and improve PSNR of the reconstructed image..

In video-based point cloud compression (V-PCC), occupancy map video is utilized to indicate whether a 2-D pixel corresponds to a valid 3-D point or not. In the current design of V-PCC, the occupancy map video is directly compressed losslessly with High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC). However, the coding tools in HEVC are specifically designed for natural images, thus unsuitable for the occupancy map. In this paper, we present a novel quadtree-based scheme for lossless occupancy map coding. In this scheme, the occupancy map is firstly divided into several coding tree units (CTUs). Then, the CTU is divided into coding units (CUs) recursively using a quadtree. The quadtree partition is terminated when one of the three conditions is satisfied. Firstly, all the pixels have the same value. Secondly, the pixels in the CU only have two kinds of values and they can be separated by a continuous edge whose endpoints lie on the side of the CU. The continuous edge is then coded using chain code. Thirdly, the CU reaches the minimum size. This scheme simplifies the design of block partitioning in HEVC and designs simpler yet more effective coding tools. Experimental results show significant reduction of bit-rate and complexity compared with the occupancy map coding scheme in V-PCC. In addition, this scheme is also very efficient to compress the semantic map.

Since hierarchical variable size block matching and bidirectional motion compensation are used in the motion-compensated embedded zero block coding (MC-EZBC), the motion information consists of motion vector quadtree map and motion vectors. In the conventional motion coding scheme, the quadtree structure is coded directly, the motion vector modes are coded with Huffman codes, and the motion vector differences are coded by an mary arithmetic coder with 0-order models. In this paper we propose a new motion coding scheme which uses an extension of the CABAC algorithm and new context modeling for quadtree structure coding and mode coding. In addition, we use a new scalable motion coding method which scales the motion vector quadtrees according to the rate-distortion slope of the tree nodes. Experimental results show that the new coding scheme increases the efficiency of the motion coding by more than 25%. The performance of the system is improved accordingly, especially in low bit rates. Moreover, with the scalable motion coding, the subjective and objective coding performance is further enhanced in low bit rate scenarios.

Considering the properties of the residual signal, core-based bit-plane probabilities are provided for MPEG-4 Audio Scalable to Lossless coding (SLS), which matches the quantization and coding performed in the core layer. Using the same strategy, new probabilities are obtained to consider the clipping effect in bit-plane coding of an unbounded signal, which is useful for non-core mode of SLS coding. Simulations show that considering the core layer parameters and the clipping effect improve the bit-plane probabilities estimation compared to the existing method.
