Ninja array antenna: novel approach for low backscattering phased array antenna

This study presents a novel concept of a low backscattering phased array antenna, a Ninja array antenna. One of the advantages of the Ninja array antenna over the conventional phased array antenna is low backscattering performance over its operating frequency band, which is not available using a conventional phased array antenna with a band-pass radome. The Ninja array antenna is designed in the same manner as the design of reflectarrays, so that the main lobe of its scattering field is directed to a specific direction except for backscattering one. As a result, its backscattering is reduced in comparison with that of the conventional phased array antenna. Although the Ninja array antenna is composed of non-identical array elements such as the reflectarray, it works as a phased array antenna because desired amplitude and phase of excitation can be obtained numerically via an array element pattern. Numerical simulation is performed and the scattering/radiation performance of the Ninja array antenna is demonstrated.

On One More Property of the Ideal array element pattern

An infinite planar array of controlled elements in the form of overlapped subarrays excited through a multiport circuit is considered. It is analytically shown that the contour element (subarray) pattern with an ideal contour shape corresponding to the absence of backward mutual coupling and, as a consequence, to the 100% element efficiency can be exactly formed at a definite amplitude distribution over the densely arranged small ideal subarray radiators in spite of the fact that each such a radiator in the subarray has low efficiency caused by the presence of backward mutual coupling. If the small ideal radiators are controlled directly (without the multiport circuit), the contour pattern can be formed with 100 % array efficiency for any shape of the contour. If the radiators are not ideal, then the efficiency of the array shaping the contour pattern is determined by averaging the mismatch efficiency of the uniformly excited array scanning over the region bounded by the contour pattern.

A compensation method of the array element pattern is proposed to measure EM field distribution on an observation plane located several wavelengths away from electronic devices in a short time. Numerical and experimental data of the 3 and 5 element collinear dipole array sensors are presented to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.

Experimental study on MUSIC-based DOA estimation by using universal steering vector

MUSIC-based estimation of direction of arrival (DOA) using universal steering vector (USV) is experimentally studied. A four-element array antenna and a four-channel receiver are employed for the experiment. In order to improve the accuracy of DOA estimation, USV which has already included the effect of mutual coupling between array elements and effect of array elements themselves is compensated to further include the electric delay and loss of four channels in the receiver. The compensated USV (C-USV) approach proposed in this paper does not need the time-consuming measurement of array element pattern because the compensating matrix for USV is obtained by measuring the S parameters between RF input ports of the feeding cables and IF output ports of the receiver. The experimental results of MUSIC-based DOA estimation show that C-USV approach is an accurate, effective and practical method for the MUSIC-based DOA estimation.

Measurement-based performance evaluation of MIMO spatial multiplexing in a multipath-rich indoor environment

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) spatial multiplexing that needs to separate and detect transmitted signal streams by using processing at the receiver end can increase the data rates of transmissions on independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) channels. Such channels have been considered to exist in nonline-of-sight (NLOS) environments. However, actual communications may also be conducted in line-of-sight (LOS) environments. While an LOS component can increase the received power level, it may also cause correlated channels that make it difficult to detect the transmitted streams. In this paper, we describe the performance of 4 x 4 MIMO spatial multiplexing based on LOS and NLOS channel measurements in an indoor environment. For eight configurations of uniform linear arrays (four antenna spacings and two array orientations), we evaluated the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the channel capacity and bit error rate performance versus transmit power, and we analyzed them in terms of antenna pattern, fading correlation, CDFs of MIMO channel elements, and CDFs of eigenvalues. Results show that, despite higher fading correlations and non i.i.d. channel characteristics, the performance of MIMO spatial multiplexing in the LOS environment is better than that in the NLOS one. However, the performance in the measured LOS environment largely depends on the MIMO configuration.

Performance of adaptive array antenna with arbitrary geometry in the presence of mutual coupling

The effect of the mutual coupling between the array elements on the performance of the adaptive array antennas (AAA) is investigated when the actual received voltages which include the mutual coupling are directly used to estimate the weight vector based on the adaptive algorithm. The output signal-to-interference-noise ratio (SINR), the convergence of the adaptive algorithm and the synthesized pattern are evaluated to study the effect due to the existence of the mutual coupling. It is found that the mutual coupling affects the antenna adaptive gain, but does not affect the adaptive processing. It is also found that the mutual coupling does not always degrade the iterative convergence of the adaptive algorithm. It is proved that any invertible matrix for compensating the mutual coupling cannot improve the output SINR. It is also indicated that the radiation pattern can be correctly synthesized in the presence of the mutual coupling by introducing the universal steering vector (USV) whose element corresponds to the array element pattern.

A measurement technique by using equally spaced dipole sensors is presented to estimate undesired electromagnetic source location emitted from electronic equipment in a short time. A compensation method for array element pattern is also proposed. Experimental values of the difference of the amplitude and phase between the received voltage of each array element and that of a single sensor placed at the same position of each array element of array sensor are obtained for the cases of 3-element and 5-element array sensors with the array spacing of 0.5 wavelength and I wavelength. It is also shown that the received voltage after compensation using experimental data agrees with the received voltage, by scanning a single sensor within 0.4 dB in amplitude and 2.4 degrees in phase.

Design on quasi-Yagi antennas array based on genetic algorithm

As radiating elements for a phased array consisting of radiating elements placed along a straight line, a quasi-Yagi antenna that has a reflector behind the dipole and a parasitic element in front is used. The length of the parasitic elements and the distance between the parasitic element and the dipole are optimized by the genetic algorithm in such a way that the gain deterioration due to beam scanning is the minimum. Further, the quasi-Yagi antenna is applied in the array antenna for direction-of-arrival estimation using such subarrays as ESPRIT. The parameters optimizing the direction-of-arrival estimation accuracy are derived by the genetic algorithm. The array antenna with quasi-Yagi antenna optimized by the genetic algorithm can significantly improve the beam scanning characteristics and improve the accuracy and resolution when used for direction-of-arrival estimation by ESPRIT This is confirmed by computer simulation and test evaluation. Near-field measurement method of a phased-array antenna - Measurement of element amplitude and phase for array

One of the measurement methods for a phased array is the rotation element field vector (REV) method. With this method, the relative amplitude and phase of the radiated field of each element antenna can be found from only the measurement of the amplitude. Hence, an arbitrary radiation pattern made possible by the tested phased antenna can be realized. To derive the far-field radiation pattern of a large aperture antenna, the nearfield measurement method is often used. When a phased array realizing various radiation patterns is measured by this method, a prohibitive amount of time is required because the electric field distribution on the plane on which the probe antenna moves differs depending on the excitation phase distribution. Because it is not possible to obtain relative amplitude, the phase of the radiation field of each element antenna necessary for realization of an arbitrary radiation pattern cannot be obtained. When the REV method is applied for near-field measurement, the direction of the probe antenna seen from each element antenna differs with respect to the reference direction installed on the phased-array antenna. Therefore, it is necessary to find both the amplitude and the phase of the electric field received by the probe antennas at different locations in order to obtain the relative amplitude and phase of the radiated field of each element antenna in the same direction needed for the radiation pattern synthesis of the far field. In this paper, a phased-array antenna is used as a probe antenna. The REV method is applied to both this antenna and the phased-array antenna being tested. A method is presented for finding the relative amplitude and phase of the radiation pattern of each element antenna using only the measurement of the amplitude.
