An array factor approach of leaky-wave (LW) antennas is proposed for efficient and fast computation of the radiation patterns of complex metamaterial LW structures of arbitrary length from the analysis of a single periodic unit cell. This approach is demonstrated in one-dimensional and two-dimensional composite right/left-handed (CRLH) LW antennas.

Novel Mathematical Formulation of the Antenna array factor for Side Lobe Level Reduction

In this article a new approach is used to improve the performance of antenna arrays. The antenna array performance is improved when its directivity is increased and its side lobes are decreased. To do this, a concept of array hybridization (mixing two distinct arrays) is presented and applied to uniform arrays to generate a new array for satisfying the requirement. Two new arrays are generated using the proposed principle. The first is obtained from two arrays with different number of elements (UUDNH). The second generated array is based on the use of two arrays with different spacing between their elements (UUDdH). The obtained arrays parameters (array factor, side lobe levels, directivity and excitation coefficients) are given in closed form expressions. Furthermore, performances of the proposed arrays exceed that of Tschebyscheff arrays with the same number of elements.

The lines of reasoning on the maximum numbers of independent adjustable parameters, peaks, and valleys in an arbitrarily shaped linear factor are clearly stated and the corresponding characteristics table is also completely constructed in this article. The array factor may be either unsymmetrical or symmetrical, and with arbitrary odd or even number of exciting currents. So far as the author knows, this table appears for the first time in the open literature, and it is believed to be of much help to the designers of equispaced linear antenna arrays when numerically optimizing the differently specified peak and valley levels of the array factor by adjusting the available independent parameters related to the exciting currents in the element antennas. When the formulas tabulated in the array factor characteristics table are used to compare with the synthesized results using the well-known numerical method for optimizing the synthesis of an arbitrary shaped array factor by Orchard, Elliot, and Stern [1] and Elliott [2], they show exact agreement.

5G utilizes antenna arrays in every standardized configuration. Both ray-based and correlation-based modeling are often used to specify a propagation condition or evaluate measured data in conjunction with antenna arrays. This paper presents a method to estimate the array factor or beam pattern that is observed from an antenna array for a given channel model using a correlation matrix and compares to the theoretical array factor. Both a simple ULA and a Planar array is used for evaluation. Also, the use of ray based geometric modeling is compared. This analysis also includes the effect of angle spread, providing a new perspective on how the channel model interacts with the antenna array.

E-MIMO is a method developed by our laboratory to calculate the maximum efficiency of MIMO systems [1], and it has already been reported that the optimal excitation voltage of the transmission elements obtained from the method applies to beamforming [2][3]. In this paper, for a three-element dipole antenna array, we compare the excitation voltages and radiation patterns obtained by the array factor(AF) method, the retrodirective control method, and E-MIMO method, respectively, and clarify the differences between them. All analysis uses the electromagnetic field analysis software Feko. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, the uniform circular array (UCA) factor formulation is used in cylindrical coordinates, to express the electric field of antennas arrayed for generating orbital angular momentum (OAM). Using MATLAB, the OAM UCA factor can be optimized for the number of elements and radius of the array. Results are verified using ANSYS HFSS for an 8-element microstrip patch UCA at 73 GHz. The phase distribution, radiation peak and sidelobe levels are predicted with the code which gives a fast way to design arrays and study tradeoffs without having to run lengthy electromagnetic simulations.

This research article explores the effect of centre antenna element on the array factor properties of the deterministic triangular fractal array antenna of expansion factor two. This sub-array based fractal array antenna is designed based on the concentric elliptical sub array geometric generator methodology. An alteration of the fractal array geometry is considered in which one of the antenna element is placed at the centre of the each sub-array of the deterministic triangular fractal array. Owing to the centre antenna element side lobe ratios are diminished from -25dB to -52dB and -30dB to -41dB in the triangular fractal array of second and third iterations simultaneously, with little variation in the side lobe level angle and beam width.

In many antenna array applications, the beam pattern is defined as a product of the individual element pattern and the array factor generated by the spacing, orientation and relative phasing and apodization of the elements. In this paper we explore the interaction between the two beam patterns of associated antennas in a circular tomographic imaging configuration and demonstrate that the effective zones of sensitivity are relatively narrow cigar-shaped swathes between the transmit and receive antennas in spite of the isotropic beam patterns of the individual monopole antennas. In this case, the rows of the Jacobian matrix used in the image reconstruction process provide the maps of the sensitivity within the propagation zone which become the bi-static array factor. This analysis further informs antenna design and the overall impact on signal-to-noise considerations.

The use of window functions to improve the side lobe level of antenna arrays is hindered by high value of excitation currents dynamic range ratio. This paper proposes a fast and iterative window function generation strategy aimed at achieving improved side lobe level starting from a preset current dynamic range ratio. Based on this strategy a new window function is developed for standard set of conditions.

Fractal antenna array generation is depending on never ending pattern design methodologies. Concentric elliptical ring sub-array (CERSA) generator is one of the deterministic geometric design methodologies for the generation of polygon and narrow beam fractal array antennas. This paper presents modified CERSA design methodology for the improved array factor characteristics than the original or unmodified version. This modified version mainly includes insertion of the central antenna element on each sub-array of the considered fractal array and amplitude tapering. Rhombic fractal array antenna generated by CERSA have considered in this work, to demonstrate the proposed modifications. All corresponding results presented in this paper, simulated by the Scilab open and free source programming.
