In this paper, a steerable isotropic circular array antenna is designed to reduce the side lobe level (SLL), using an evolutionary optimization technique. Particle swarm optimization and the firefly algorithm are used to reduce the SLL, as well as to steer the main beam in a specific direction. In this steerable circular array design, the amplitude excitations are optimized. The results show that the maximum SLL peak of the resultant patterns is as per requirements. Good performance is achieved in the array factor response and suppression of SLL for different numbers of array elements with different main beam steering angles.

In this paper, the beam steerable isotropic Linear Antenna array is designed for reducing the side lobe level using evolutionary optimization technique. The optimization techniques particle swarm optimization (PSO) and Novel PSO are used to reduce the side lobe level (SLL) as well as to steer the main beam in specific direction. In this design of steerable Linear arrays, the amplitude excitations are optimized. Obtained results show that the maximum peak of SLL of the resultant patterns is as per requirement. This paper presents a good performance in the array factor response and suppressed SLL for different numbers of elements and different values of the steering angle of direction of the main beam with evolutionary optimization.

A new method for array pattern synthesis in the presence of near-zone scatterers in the two-dimensional scalar case is presented. The synthesis is based on the minimization of an objective function using the simulated annealing technique. To take into account the effects of the scatterers, the physical optics approximation is used. Performance of liter-scale microbial fuel cells with electrode arrays: Effect of array pattern

Scale-up of microbial fuel cells requires the application of compact structure with well-arranged multi-electrode. For better understanding of electrode design, two liter-scale microbial fuel cells with staggered array (MFC-S) and inline array (MFC-I) were constructed using graphite rod electrodes. The effects of electrode array pattern on MFC startup, power generation, anodic current distribution, COD removal and coulombic efficiency were evaluated. The results showed that MFC-S had a faster startup with higher voltage output compared with MFC-I. Moreover, the maximum power density (23.8 W/m(3)) of MFC-S was approximately one quarter higher than that of MFC-I (19.1 W/m(3)) due to the structure-induced better mass transfer of staggered array. No noticeable difference in anodic current maldistribution between the two MFCs was observed at a similar cell current. For a batch feeding mode, compared with MFC-I, MFC-S had a slightly higher COD removal efficiency (84.3%) but much higher coulombic efficiency (82.3%) with a nonuniform segment CE distribution. This paper presents about the effect of Vivaldi element pattern on the Uniform Linear array pattern. Vivaldi antenna can operate over wide bandwidth. Geometry of the radiating element influences element radiation pattern especially for frequency far from the center frequency. In this paper, we reported coplanar Vivaldi antenna with dimension 60x60 mm on FR4 substrate with permittivity 4.7. The antenna has differents element pattern at 2 GHz, 3 GHz and 4 GHz. It is shown that bad radiation pattern in certain frequency in broadband antenna can effects on the total array pattern. Differents element pattern, spacing and number of elements resulted different array pattern. We simulated variation 5 mm and 15 mm spacing between adjacent sides of Vivaldi elements and variation 3 and 10 number of elements in each frequency. From simulated resulted shows that the total array pattern has higher back lobe level than main lobe level for N=5, d=0.433. at 2 GHz due to its elements pattern performance. Gain of the main lobe level is obtained as 10.81 dB at 3 GHz, N=5, d=0.65.. Gain of the array pattern increased and HPBW decreased with increasing number of elements. From simulated result, it reveals that good performance of element pattern and total array pattern is achieved at 3 GHz, 4 GHz and 2 GHz respectively. Increasing operating frequency will affect its sidelobe performance due to different spacing between elements relative to certain wavelength. Although broadband antenna has return loss below -10 dB in all band frequency, it must be better to know element pattern in each operating frequency. It can avoid bad performance of total array pattern in certain frequency. Simulation by using multiplication element pattern with array factor can reduce computation time compared with full wave simulation. But it does not consider mutual coupling effect.

Design of a Broadband array pattern of Underwater Cymbal Transducers

Cymbal transducers are frequently used as an array rather than a single element because of their high quality factor and low energy conversion efficiency. When used as an array, cymbal transducers are likely to have a big change in their frequency characteristics due to the interaction with neighboring elements. In this study, we designed an array pattern of cymbal transducers to achieve a wide frequency bandwidth using this property. First, cymbal transducers with specific center frequencies were designed. Next, a 2 x 2 planar array was constructed with the designed transducers, where dielectric polarity directions of the transducers were divided into two cases (i.e., same and different). For the array, the effect of the difference in the center frequencies and the spacing between the transducers on the acoustic characteristics of the entire array was analyzed. Based on the results, the structural pattern of the array was optimized to have the maximum fractional bandwidth while maintaining the transmitting voltage response over a given requirement. The design validity was verified by making cymbal array prototypes, followed by measuring their performances and comparing them with that of the design.

Evaluations for Estimation Method of the Distributed array Antenna (DAA) Radiation pattern by Experimental Analysis

We target the estimation of antenna patterns of distributed array antenna (DAA) systems for satellite communications. Measuring DAA patterns is very difficult because of the large antenna separations involved, more than several tens of wavelengths. Our goal is to elucidate the accuracy of the DAA pattern estimation method whose inputs are actual antenna pattern data and array factors by evaluating their similarity to actually measured DAA radiation patterns. Experiments on two Ku band parabolic antennas show that their patterns can be accurately estimated even if we change the conditions such as frequency, antenna arrangement and polarization. Evaluations reveal that the method has high estimation accuracy since its errors are better than 1 dB. We conclude the method is useful for the accurate estimation of DAA patterns.

A new least-square active element pattern expansion (LS-AEPE) method is presented. With the help of this method, the array's pattern including the element mutual coupling and platform effect can be efficiently calculated by the fast Fourier transform (FFT). These techniques are then combined with the genetic algorithm (GA) to optimise the excitation phases for a 64-element linear array mounted on a trapezoid metal plate.
