The aim of this paper is to introduce a novel MUSIC-like algorithm for polarized sources characterization based on a quaternion model for two-component sensor-array signal. The associated data covariance matrix is described and a comparison with the classical long-vector approach is made. We show that the use of quaternions improves the signal subspace estimation accuracy and reduces the computational burden. Additionally, the proposed algorithm presents a better resolution power for direction of arrival (DOA) estimation than the long-vector approach, for equivalent statistical performances.

Distant speech recognition (DSR) holds out the promise of the most natural human computer interface because it enables man-machine interactions through speech, without the necessity of donning intrusive body- or head-mounted microphones. With the advent of the Microsoft Kinect, the application of non-uniform linear arrays to the DSR problem has become commonplace. Performance analysis of such arrays is well-represented in the literature. Recently, spherical arrays have become the subject of intense research interest in the acoustic array processing community. Such arrays have heretofore been analyzed solely with theoretical metrics under idealized conditions. In this work, we analyze such arrays under realistic conditions. Moreover, we compare a linear array with 64-channel arrays and a total length of 126 cm to a spherical array with 32 channels and a radius of 4.2 cm;we found that these provided word error rates of 9.3% and 10.2%, respectively, on a DSR task. For a speaker positioned at an oblique angle with respect to the linear array, we recorded error rates of 12.8% and 9.7%, respectively, for the linear and spherical arrays. The compact size and outstanding performance of the spherical array recommends itself well to space-limited and mobile applications such as home-gaming consoles and humanoid robots.

This paper presents an electrically programmable analog multiplier. The circuit performs the multiplication between an input variable and an electrically selectable scaling factor. The multiplier is divided in several blocks: a linearized transconductor, binary weighted current mirrors and a differential to single-ended current adder. This paper shows the advantages introduced using a linearized OTA-based multiplier. The circuit presented renders higher linearity and symmetry in the output current than a previously reported single-transistor multiplier. Its inclusion in an array processor based on CNN allows for a more accurate implementation of the processing model and a more robust weight distribution scheme than those found in previous designs.

This paper presents an optimum linear array geometry for 2q-th order cumulant-based array processing for high-resolution direction of arrival (DOA) estimation. The concept of Khatri-Rao (KR) product gives the difference co-array which makes larger virtual array aperture. The virtual array geometry depends on the original physical array configuration, and the minimum redundancy array (MRA) can be regarded as one of the optimum arrays in the case of q = 1. The 2 -level nested array is an efficient array in the case of q >= 2 but it does not become an optimum geometry with the maximum degree-of-freedom (DOF). In this paper, we try to extend the MRA to have more DOF in comparison with 2q-level nested array. We use the 2q-MUSIC algorithm for DOA estimation, and the accuracy of the proposed array becomes better than that of 2q level nested array. The performance of the proposed array is evaluated through computer simulation.

A motion-compensated ultra-short baseline acoustic positioning system operable in shallow water and port environment has been implemented at Florida Atlantic University. Multi-tones signal modulation and log-likelihood maximization enable this acoustic positioning system to operate in volumes of water of less than 10 cubic meters. The motion compensation system estimates the array position and orientation by merging inertial and differential GPS measurements using Kalman filtering techniques. Experiments show 0.67 and 2.67 degrees of error for the array tilt and heading estimates, and 0.74 meter for the array position estimate at a range of 23 meters.

Blurred contours are often sought in digital image processing. Most of the existing techniques try to detect blurred contours by fuzzy techniques. In this article, we propose to model the blurred contours by generating the virtual signals from the image, and provide a new viewpoint to detect blurred contour. Especially, the blurred contour with exponential distribution can be presented by three parameters. Then, array processing methods are adopted to estimate these parameters, and optimization method is also considered when the spread parameter is estimated. Experiments finally prove that the proposed methods estimate the parameters of blurred contours accurately and with a reduced computational load.
