Flexible Detection Criterion for Source Enumeration in array processing

Two new procedures are proposed using random matrix theory to evaluate theoretically the performance of the Bayesian information criterion (BIC) for source enumeration in array processing. The proposed procedures can predict precisely the estimation results of the BIC. Also, they shed light on the behavior of the BIC. In order to remedy the limitation of the BIC, that is, the BIC tends to underestimate the number of sources by one in most cases, an extra parameter is introduced into the BIC formulation, which results in a new criterion for source enumeration, referred to as the flexible detection criterion (FDC). By carefully choosing this parameter, the FDC is capable of substantially reducing the probability of underestimation, which is validated by theoretical analysis and simulations. Note that the FDC is consistent and has low computational complexity, as the BIC.

We investigate the problem of enumerating source signals impinging on an array of sensors given noisy, limited observations. The assumption of a large sample size is indispensable for most of the existing approaches so that they suffer significant performance degradation when only a small number of samples is available. Random matrix theory can capture the asymptotic distributions of the eigenvalues accurately and provide good approximations even for a finite sample size. In this paper, we take into account the relationship and distributions of the noise and signal eigenvalues based on random matrix theory and derive a simple two-step test. Numerical simulations demonstrate that it is capable of correctly determining the number of sources in the case of small sample sizes.

Effect of unitary transformation on Bayesian information criterion for source numbering in array processing

An approach based on unitary transformation for the problem of estimating the number of signals is proposed in this study. Among the information theoretic criteria, the authors focus on the conventional Bayesian information criterion (BIC) in the presence of a uniform linear array. The sample covariance matrix of this array is transformed into the real symmetric one by using a unitary transformation. This real symmetric matrix has real eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Therefore its eigenvalue decomposition needs only real computations. Since the eigenvalues of this real symmetric matrix are equal to the eigenvalues of the sample covariance matrix, by replacing them in BIC formula, the term log-likelihood of BIC does not change but it is obtained by fewer computations. Also by considering the resulting real eigenvectors instead of the complex eigenvectors as a part of free parameters in the parameter vector of the model, they have a reduction in the number of degrees of freedom in the penalty term of BIC. This reduction makes their proposed method outperform BIC. They refer to this approach as unitary BIC. A series of simulations are included to demonstrate the usefulness of this approach.

Iterative Sparse Asymptotic Minimum Variance Based Approaches for array processing

This paper presents a series of user parameter-free iterative Sparse Asymptotic Minimum Variance (SAMV) approaches for array processing applications based on the asymptotically minimum variance (AMV) criterion. With the assumption of abundant snapshots in the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation problem, the signal powers and noise variance are jointly estimated by the proposed iterative AMV approach, which is later proved to coincide with the Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimator. We then propose a series of power-based iterative SAMV approaches, which are robust against insufficient snapshots, coherent sources and arbitrary array geometries. Moreover, to overcome the direction grid limitation on the estimation accuracy, the SAMV-Stochastic ML (SAMV-SML) approaches are derived by explicitly minimizing a closed form stochastic ML cost function with respect to one scalar paramter, eliminating the need of any additional grid refinement techniques. To assist the performance evaluation, approximate solutions to the SAMV approaches are also provided for high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and low SNR scenarios. Finally, numerical examples are generated to compare the performances of the proposed approaches with those of the existing ones.

Estimation of the directions of arrival of spatially dispersed signals in array processing

The problem of estimating the DOA of spatially distributed signals is examined. A mathematical model is first established by making some reasonable assumptions. The correlation matrix of a distributed signal is then derived. The important properties of the correlation matrix are studied, revealing that even if the matrix is of full rank (being equal to the number of sensors), which renders conventional high resolution array processing methods inapplicable, the dimensionality of the signal subspace can be approximated to a number usually much smaller than the number of sensors. From the observation, the quasi-signal and noise subspaces are identified, and, utilising the orthogonality of the signal and noise subspaces, an algorithm (DISPARE) has been developed. Analytic studies and numerical evaluations are carried out to examine the performance of the algorithm under various environments and show that it is indeed effective.

The Statistical Signal and array processing Technical Committee(SSAP-TC) deals with signals that are random and processes an array ofsignals simultaneously. The field of SSAP represents both solid theoryand practical applications. Starting with research in spectrumestimation and statistical modeling, study in this field is always fullof elegant mathematical tools such as statistical analysis and matrixtheory. The area of statistical signal processing expands intoestimation and detection algorithms, time-frequency domain analysis,system identification, and channel modeling and equalization. The areaof array signal processing also extends into multichannel filtering,source localization and separation, and so on. This article representsan endeavor by the members of the SSAT-TC to review all the significantdevelopments in the field of SSAP. To provide readers with pointers forfurther study of the field, this article includes a very impressivebibliography-close to 500 references are cited. This is just one of theindications that the field of statistical signals has been an extremelyactive one in the signal processing community. The article alsointroduces the recent reorganization of three technical committees ofthe Signal processing Society

This paper presents and investigates a new preprocessed Gram-Schmidt algorithm for broadband linearly constrained arrays using tapped delay line processing. It is proposed that before the conventional Gram-Schmidt scheme is employed to reject unwanted interferences, the element signals should first be transformed by using a simple preprocessor to satisfy the look direction constraint and to reduce the correlation due to finite bandwidth effects. With this preprocessing, the implementation complexity of the algorithm is reduced by a factor equal to the number of taps behind each array element. Furthermore, due to this size reduction, the new algorithm also becomes faster in its convergence behaviour.

Resource-Aware Data Parallel array processing

Malleable applications may run with varying numbers of threads, and thus on varying numbers of cores, while the precise number of threads is irrelevant for the program logic. Malleability is a common property in data-parallel array processing. With ever growing core counts we are increasingly faced with the problem of how to choose the best number of threads. We propose a compiler-directed, almost automatic tuning approach for the functional array processing languageSaC. Our approach consists of an offline training phase during which compiler-instrumented application code systematically explores the design space and accumulates a persistent database of profiling data. When generating production code our compiler consults this database and augments each data-parallel operation with a recommendation table. Based on these recommendation tables the runtime system chooses the number of threads individually for each data-parallel operation. With energy/power efficiency becoming an ever greater concern, we explicitly distinguish between two application scenarios: aiming at best possible performance or aiming at a beneficial trade-off between performance and resource investment.

METHOD FOR array CALIBRATION IN HIGH-RESOLUTION SENSOR array-processing

With few exceptions, most high-resolution sensor array algorithms for direction of arrival (DOA) estimation are sensitive to the errors in the nominal array manifold. Deviations from the true array manifold, typically resulting from mutual coupling, array channels mismatch and sensor positioning errors, can seriously degrade the algorithms' performance. Several array calibration algorithms have been reported in the literature;however, only a handful have addressed the problem of calibrating the errors in the array manifold that result from the combined effects of mutual coupling, sensor positioning error and mismatch in the array channels. This problem is addressed in the paper. By extending the array parametrisation to describe the deviations of the nominal array manifold from the actual array manifold, the array calibration problem considered can be posed as that of estimating the calibration matrix and sensor positions. The array calibration method proposed estimates the sensor positions and calibration matrix from a set of measured steering vectors. The usefulness and behaviour of the proposed calibration method are illustrated through simulated experiments.

Motion compensation for adaptive horizontal line array processing

Large aperture horizonial line arrays have small resolution cells and can be used to separate a target signal from an interference signal by array beamforming. High-resolution adaptive array processing can be used to place a null at the interference signal so that the array gain can be much higher than that of conventional beamforming. But these nice features are significantly degraded by the source motion, which reduces the time period under which the environment, can be considered stationary from the array processing point of view. For adaptive array, processing, a large number of data samples are generally required to minimize the variance of the cross-spectral density, or the covariance matrix, between the array elements. For a moving source and interference, the penalty of integrating over a large number of samples is the spread of signal and interference energy to more than one or two eigenvalues. The signal and interference are no longer clearly identified by the eigenvectors and, consequently, the ability to suppress the interference suffers. We show in this paper that the effect of source motion can be compensated for the (signal) beam covariance matrix., thus allowing integration over a large number of data samples without loss in the signal beam power. We employ an equivalent of a rotating coordinate frame to track the signal bearing change and use the waveguide invariant theory to compensate the signal range change by frequency shifting.
