Integrated diffractive optical neural network with space-time interleaving

Integrated diffractive optical neural networks(DONNs)have significant potential for complex machine learning tasks with high speed and ultralow energy ***,the on-chip implementation of a high-performance optical neural network is limited by input *** contrast to existing photonic neural networks,a space-time interleaving technology based on arrayed waveguides is designed to realize an on-chip DONN with high-speed,high-dimensional,and all-optical input signal *** demonstrate the performance of the on-chip DONN with high-speed space-time interleaving modulation,an on-chip DONN with a designed footprint of 0.0945 mm~2is proposed to resolve the vowel recognition task,reaching a computation speed of about 1.4×10^(13)operations per second and yielding an accuracy of 98.3%in numerical *** addition,the function of the specially designed arrayed waveguides for realizing parallel signal inputs using space-time conversion has been verified *** method can realize the on-chip DONN with higher input dimension and lower energy consumption.

In recent years, astronomical observation has put forward higher requirements for observation environment, resolution power and simultaneous observation quantity, which makes the cost of traditional spectrometer spiraling. The development of integrated photonics provides a miniaturized, low-cost and environment-friendly solution for astronomical spectral observation. However, high resolution spectrum is hard to achieve because of the highly repetitive structure and defocus aberration existing in re-imaging system when needing cross dispersion. Based on Silica-on-Silicon material platform with a refractive index contrast of 0.23%, new structure of cascaded modulation arrayed waveguides(CMAW) with total length difference of 22mm are arranged in a square chip with a side length of 40mm, having a theoretical resolution of 20,000@1550nm and tested resolution of 15,000@1550nm. Our work demonstrates the potential of integrated photonics applying in high resolution astronomical spectral observation, three times above the record of available resolution power international, which is expected to provide a solution for space observation and large-scale spectral survey.

Thermal stress effects on the mode field characteristics of arrayed waveguides are studied precisely by finite element method (FEM) with plain strain model. The amplitudes of E-x and E-y are comparable for the E-11(x) mode and the E-11(y) mode in a homogeneous and isotropic optical channel waveguide. Considering the elasto-optic effect, the refractive indices are inhomogeneous and anisotropic. It is shown that the amplitude of E-y for the E-11(x) mode and that of E-x for the E-11(y), mode are much smaller than the other electric field components. The simplest method to apply thermal stress is to place a stress plate on the arrayed waveguides. It is shown that the effective indices of the two modes, especially the E-11(y) mode, can be tuned by stress plates with different thickness. The order of magnitude of tune range is 10(-4) whereas the material of plate is aluminum. The effective indices can be increased by attaching an aluminum plate with appropriate thickness under arrayed waveguides, and will be decreased whatever the thickness of the plate is set if attached over arrayed waveguides. However, the stress plate has small effect on the optical mode fields.

Modeling and design of irregularly arrayed waveguide gratings

In this paper we propose a concept of irregularly arrayed waveguide gratings (IAWGs). By replacing regularly arrayed waveguides of conventional AWGs with irregularly arrayed ones, we found theoretically that the IAWGs have arbitrary free spectral ranges and are suitable to provide a large number of channels with relatively smaller circuit regions. A Fourier optics model is presented, which is able to calculate the transmission characteristics between any arbitrary pair of input/output ports in either conventional AWGs or IAWGs. As an example, a 1080-channel IAWG with 0.199 nm spacing is designed and simulated. Results show this device can be contained in a 6-inch wafer and provide two work patterns: all 1080 channels with a relatively high crosstalk of about -20 dB, and 128 successive channels which can be arbitrarily moveable over the range of the 1080 channels with a crosstalk of about -32 dB. In this paper a novel grating-like integrated optics device is proposed, the Cross Waveguide Grating (XWG). The device is based upon a modified configuration of a traditional arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG). The arrayed waveguides part is changed, as detailed along this document, giving the device both the ability of multi/demultiplexing and power splitting/coupling. Design examples and transfer function simulations show good agreement with the presented theory. Finally, some of the envisaged applications are outlined. (C) 2005 Optical Society of America.

We have proposed the optical deflector using arrayed waveguides that have different refractive index fabricated by MOVPE selective area growth. By placing the asymmetric width of SiO2 mask pattern on both sides of the arrayed waveguide, the thickness of the each waveguide in the array has changed gradually. And the phase change in each arrayed waveguide results the deflection of the light. In this device, we have numerically calculated and fabricated the 1xN multi-mode interference (MMI) star coupler using GaInAs/InP MQW structure to input the light equally for each arrayed waveguide. From the numerical calculation, we obtain 0.42dB fluctuation of the output light power in each waveguide in the 1 x 16 MMI waveguide. In the experiment, we fabricated the 1 x 16 MMI waveguide using GaInAs/InP MQW structure, and 0.88dB fluctuation of the output light was obtained for the 1.56mum wavelength input light. And further, we have numerically calculated the wavelength demultiplexing and switching performance in this device. We have obtained the wavelength dependence of output power in 8 arrayed waveguides that have 1.0% refractive index difference in both sides of the arrayed waveguide. From this analysis, we can exchange the output ports of each wavelength by controlling the refractive index in the arrayed waveguide.

Improved AWG Fourier optics model

In this paper we present an improved Fourier Optics model to calculate the transmission characteristics between any arbitrary pair of input/output ports (IOPs) of an arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG). In this model the input and output sections of the AWG are modeled using the same approximations, thus removing some reciprocity-related inconsistencies present in previously existing models. The expressions which summarize the model are compact and easily interpretable. Simple quasi-analytical expressions are also derived under the Gaussian approximation of the mode field profiles. Beam-adjustment-free crosstalk reduction in 10GHz-spaced arrayed-waveguide grating via photosensitivity under UV laser irradiation through metal mask

The crosstalk of a 10GHz-spaced 32 channel arrayed-waveguide grating has been reduced from -17 to -30dB and from -16 to -27dB for the TE and TM modes, respectively, via the photosensitivity under 193nm ArF excimer laser irradiation. A metal mask with a window was placed on the arrayed waveguides and the unmasked arrayed waveguides were irradiated until the crosstalk was reduced to the desired value. This technique means that fine adjustment of the laser beam on individual arrayed waveguides is no longer necessary.
