aspect-oriented design and implementation of adaptable access control for Electronic Medical Records

Objectives: Maintaining proper access control to Electronic Medical Records (EMR) is essential to protecting patients' privacy. We aim to develop mechanisms and tools that can support fine-grained and adaptable access control for EMR. Method: This paper presents an aspect-oriented design and implementation scheme to providing adaptable access control for Web-based EMR systems. In our scheme, access control logic is decoupled from the core of the EMR application and collected into separate aspect modules which are automatically synthesized from access control rules in XML format and properly designed aspect templates. The generated aspect modules will then be compiled and integrated into the underlying EMR application using standard aspect tools. At runtime, these binary aspect modules will be executed to enforce the required access control. Future changes of access control rules can also be effectively realized through these mechanisms without actual coding. Results: A structured form of access control rules based on the Taiwan Electronic Medical Record Template, a suite of abstract aspects and templates for enforcing access control and a translator for synthesizing the complete access control code in aspectJ from such access control rules and aspect templates. We have also built a Web-based EMR prototype implementation to demonstrate our approach. Conclusion: Our approach can not only accommodate a wide range of fine-grained access control requirements but also enforce them in a modular and easy to adapt manner without incurring extra performance overhead due to rule interpretation. The use of aspect-oriented technology to provide adaptable access control for EMR is a promising approach. We have further enhanced our scheme with a mechanism for dynamic adjustment of access control rules. Many aspect mining techniques have been proposed for object-oriented systems. Unfortunately, aspect mining for multi-agent systems is an unexplored research area. The inherent specificities of multi-agent systems (such as autonomy, pro-activity, reactivity, and adaptability) make it difficult to understand, reuse and maintain their code. We propose, in this paper, a (semi-automatic) hybrid aspect mining approach for agent-oriented code. The technique is based on both static and dynamic analyzes. The main motivations of this work are (I) identifying cross-cutting concerns in existing agent-oriented code, and (2) making them explicitly available to software engineers involved in the evolution of agent-oriented code in order to facilitate its refactoring and, consequently, to improve its understandability, reusability and maintainability. The proposed approach is supported by a software tool, called MAMIT (MAS aspect-Mining Tool), that we developed. The approach and the associated tool are illustrated using a concrete case study. RAMBUTANS: automatic AOP-specific test generation tool

aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is a programmatic methodology to handle better modularized code by separating crosscutting concerns from the traditional abstraction boundaries. Automated testing, as one of the most demanding needs of the software development to reduce both human effort and costs, is a delicate issue in testing aspect-oriented programs. Prior studies in the automated test generation for aspect-oriented programs have been very limited with respect to the need for both adequate tool support and capability concerning effectiveness and efficiency. This paper describes a new AOP-specific tool for testing aspect-oriented programs, called RAMBUTANS. The RAMBUTANS tool uses a directed random testing technique that is especially well suited for generating tests for aspectual features in aspectJ. The directed random aspect of the tool is parameterized by associating weights to aspects, advice, methods, and classes by controlling object and joint point creations during the test generation process. We present a comprehensive empirical evaluation of our tool against the current AOP test generation approaches on three industrial aspect-oriented projects. The results of the experimental and statistical tests showed that RAMBUTANS tool produces test suites that have higher fault-detection capability and efficiency for aspectJ-like programs.

Applying Model-Driven Architecture to achieve distribution transparencies

This paper proposes a principled methodology for the realization of distribution transparencies. The proposed methodology is placed within the general context of Model-Driven Architecture (MDA) development. Specifically, it consists of a UML-based representation for the specification of platform independent models of a system. Moreover, it comprises an automated aspect-oriented method for the refinement of platform independent models into platform specific ones (i.e. models describing the realization of the system's distribution transparency requirements, based on a standard middleware platform like CORBA, J2EE, COM +, etc.). Finally, the proposed methodology includes an aspect-oriented method for the generation of platform specific code from platform specific models. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Dealing with crosscutting and dynamic features in component software using aspect-orientation: requirements and experiences

Coping with crosscutting and dynamic features of software systems has significant impacts on software modularity, reusability, adaptability, and maintainability. However, dealing with such features is a tremendous challenge for different software paradigms, particularly component-based software development (CBSD) where components can be used as black box software units. Fortunately, dealing with crosscutting features is the main focus of aspect-orientation (AO). To compromise, a plethora of different AO and CBSD combinations are available. There is, however, little consensus on how AO and CBSD can be combined and what AO qualities need to be integrated for getting maximum benefits from the combination. In the aim to reach a consensus and increase the understanding of requirements for proper combinations that deal with crosscutting and dynamic features, the authors conduct a domain analysis study of existing combination endeavours;they first identify a set of requirements ought to be fulfilled for proper modelling of crosscutting and dynamic features in component software using AO;second, they group the identified requirements into an evaluation model;third, they check the capability of existing combinations to validate the evaluation model. The study highlighted mandatory requirements for proper combinations and revealed that none of the existing endeavours validates the evaluation model.

A scalable method-level parallel library and its improvement

This paper proposes a method-level parallel library, called JPL, and an improved version based on aspect-oriented programming, called AOJPL. Both JPL and AOJPL execute a method based on run-time reflection. By adding OpenMP-like notations to the definition of a method, AOJPL can automatically finish some tasks of JPL, thus making AOJPL easy to utilize. Experimental results show that when JPL and AOJPL are applied to several benchmarks in the JGF Benchmark Suite for varying numbers of threads on two different multicore processors (Intel Xeon and Sun Sparc T2), their performance tracks JOMP very closely under the situation that the number of software threads is not more than a number (8 for Intel Xeon and 64 for Sun Sparc T2). When the number of software threads surpasses the number, JPL and AOJPL significantly outperform JOMP for all four benchmarks. Both JPL and AOJPL can gain good scalability.

Polymorphic bytecode instrumentation

Bytecode instrumentation is a widely used technique to implement aspect weaving and dynamic analyses in virtual machines such as the Java virtual machine. aspect weavers and other instrumentations are usually developed independently and combining them often requires significant engineering effort, if at all possible. In this article, we present polymorphic bytecode instrumentation(PBI), a simple but effective technique that allows dynamic dispatch amongst several, possibly independent instrumentations. PBI enables complete bytecode coverage, that is, any method with a bytecode representation can be instrumented. We illustrate further benefits of PBI with three case studies. First, we describe how PBI can be used to implement a comprehensive profiler of inter-procedural and intra-procedural control flow. Second, we provide an implementation of execution levels for aspectJ, which avoids infinite regression and unwanted interference between aspects. Third, we present a framework for adaptive dynamic analysis, where the analysis to be performed can be changed at runtime by the user. We assess the overhead introduced by PBI and provide thorough performance evaluations of PBI in all three case studies. We show that pure Java profilers like JP2 can, thanks to PBI, produce accurate execution profiles by covering all code, including the core Java libraries. We then demonstrate that PBI-based execution levels are much faster than control flow pointcuts to avoid interference between aspects and that their efficient integration in a practical aspect language is possible. Finally, we report that PBI enables adaptive dynamic analysis tools that are more reactive to user inputs than existing tools that rely on dynamic aspect-oriented programming with runtime weaving. These experiments position PBI as a widely applicable and practical approach for combining bytecode instrumentations. Copyright (c) 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A middleware-transparent approach to developing distributed applications

An innovative middleware-transparent approach to developing distributed applications is presented. The approach uses an aspect-oriented software development technique to separate an application's middleware-independent functionality from its middleware-specific functionality. Application elements that are specific to the middleware are localized in aspects that can be seamlessly integrated into middleware-independent application designs. The middleware-transparent approach is used to decouple business functionality from middleware-specific functionality. The decoupling allows developers to change middleware application elements without significantly modifying business functionality. Middleware technologies such as Java Remote Method Invocation (RMI), Jini, Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) remote procedure call (RPC) and Net are used as examples to illustrate the approach. An approach for deploying and monitoring dynamic security policies

Security policies are enforced through the deployment of certain security functionalities within the applications. When the security policies dynamically change, the associated security functionalities currently deployed within the applications must be adapted at runtime in order to enforce the new security policies. INTER-TRUST is a framework for the specification, negotiation, deployment and dynamic adaptation of interoperable security policies, in the context of pervasive systems where devices are constantly exchanging critical information through the network. The dynamic adaptation of the security policies at runtime is addressed using aspect-oriented programming (AOP) that allows enforcing security requirements by dynamically weaving security aspects into the applications. However, a mechanism to guarantee the correct adaptation of the functionality that enforces the changing security policies is needed. In this paper, we present an approach based on the combination of monitoring and detection techniques in order to maintain the correlation between the security policies and the associated functionality deployed using AOP, allowing the INTER TRUST framework to automatically react when needed. An expressive stateful aspect language

Stateful aspects can react to the trace of a program execution;they can support modular implementations of several crosscutting concerns like error detection, security, event handling, and debugging. However, most proposed stateful aspect languages have specifically been tailored to address a particular concern. Indeed, most of these languages differ in their pattern languages and semantics. As a consequence, developers need to tweak aspect definitions in contortive ways or create new specialized stateful aspect languages altogether if their specific needs are not supported. In this paper, we describe ESA, an expressive stateful aspect language, in which the pattern language is Turing-complete and patterns themselves are reusable, composable first-class values. In addition, the core semantic elements of every aspect in ESA are open to customization. We describe ESA in a typed functional language. We use this description to develop a concrete and practical implementation of ESA for JavaScript. With this implementation, we illustrate the expressiveness of ESA in action with examples of diverse scenarios and expressing semantics of existing stateful aspect languages. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V.
