Tools and techniques for non-invasive explicit parallelization

This paper presents an overview of our experiments in integrating modern software engineering tools and techniques with the process of developing parallel applications for distributed memory architectures. The main goal was to determine the methods that have the potential of reducing the complexities associated with explicit parallelization. We experimented with template metaprogramming, aspect-oriented programming, program transformation engine, and a domain-specific language called Hi-PaL. The pros and cons of using each technique for explicit parallelization are presented in this paper. Our experiments demonstrate that through a combination of modern software engineering tools and techniques, the effort involved in explicit parallelization can be reduced by 90 % without any significant loss in performance.

Modularizing application and database evolution - an aspect-oriented framework for orthogonal persistence

In the maintenance of software applications, database evolution is one common difficulty. In object-oriented databases, this process comprises schema evolution and instance adaptation. Both tasks usually require significant effort from programmers and database administrators. In this paper, we propose orthogonal persistence and aspect-oriented programming to support semi-transparent database evolution. A default mechanism for instance evolution is defined, but the user may provide modularized solutions using the aspect-oriented paradigm. We present our framework AOF4OOP to test the feasibility of our proposed approach. This prototype allows programmes to transparently access data in other versions of the database schema. We evaluate our framework, comparing it to related approaches using two real applications and measuring the improvement of the productivity of the programmer. Photooxidative destruction of organic compounds by hydrogen peroxide in water

The paper has studied the state of the art in the investigations into the kinetics and the mechanism of photoinduced oxidative destruction of organic compounds of various classes by hydrogen peroxide in aqueous media. We have analyzed the impact of physical and chemical factors (substrate structure, pH of the medium, H2O2 concentration, presence of oxygen, etc.) and the rate of the photooxidative process. The analysis of the technicoeconomic characteristics of the UV/H2O2 system in correlation with other highly effective AOP methods (Advanced Oxidation Processes) is an evidence of good prospects of using it in the technology of treating natural and industrial wastewaters from organic pollutants.

JiST: an efficient approach to simulation using virtual machines

Discrete event simulators are important scientific tools and their efficient design and execution is the subject of much research. In this paper, we propose a new approach for constructing simulators that leverages virtual machines and combines advantages from the traditional systems-based and language-based simulator designs. We introduce JiST, a Java-based simulation system that executes discrete event simulations both efficiently and transparently by embedding simulation semantics directly into the Java execution model. The system provides standard benefits that the modern Java runtime affords. In addition, JiST is efficient, out-performing existing highly optimized simulation runtimes. As a case study, we illustrate the practicality of the JiST framework by applying it to the construction of SWANS, a scalable wireless ad hoc network simulator. We simulate million node wireless networks, which represents two orders of magnitude increase in scale over what existing simulators can achieve on equivalent hardware and at the same level of detail. MAINTAINABILITY METRICS FOR aspect-oriented SOFTWARE

Maintainability is an important factor that developers should be concerned because two-thirds of software costs involve maintenance. aspect-oriented programming (AOP) paradigm is aimed to increase the software maintainability. It solves code tangling and code scattering problems by introducing a new modular unit, called "aspect". Various research works are provided to support measuring the object-oriented software, but only few studies are set up to support measuring the aspect-oriented software. This paper proposes aspect-oriented software maintainability metrics and a set of aspect-oriented design guidelines to support the metrics. By combining the proposed guidelines, object-oriented design principles, and aspect-oriented design principles, the metrics are constructed according to the Factor-Strategy (FS) quality model and the Factor-Criteria-Metric (FCM) quality model. Principle violation check definitions in the form of Boolean expressions are also defined to conduct software measurement and to fulfill the metrics. Finally, the aspect-oriented software maintainability metrics are applied to detect design principle violations in fifty aspectJ systems. The results show that for all systems their hidden flaws are exposed. Moreover, the proposed metrics are used to compare the maintainability between two versions of systems written in Java and aspectJ.

In the past, researchers have developed specialized programs to aid programmers in detecting concurrent programming errors such as deadlocks, livelocks, starvation, and data races. In this work, we propose a language extension to the aspect-oriented programming language aspectJ, in the form of three new pointcuts, lock(), unlock(), and maybeShared(). These pointcuts allow programmers to monitor program events where locks are granted or handed back, and where values are accessed that may be shared among multiple Java threads. We decide thread locality using a static thread-local-objects analysis developed by others. Using the three new primitive pointcuts, researchers can directly implement efficient monitoring algorithms to detect concurrent-programming errors online. As an example, we describe a new algorithm which we call RACER, an adaption of the well-known ERASER algorithm to the memory model of Java. We implemented the new pointcuts as an extension to the aspectBench Compiler, implemented the RACER algorithm using this language extension, and then applied the algorithm to the NASA K9 Rover Executive and two smaller programs. Our experiments demonstrate that our implementation is effective in finding subtle data races. In the Rover Executive, RACER finds 12 data races, with no false warnings. Only one of these races was previously known.

Weaving temporal and reliability aspects into a schema tapestry

In aspect-oriented programming (AOP) a cross-cutting concern is implemented in an aspect. An aspect weaver blends code from the aspect into a program's code at programmer-specified cut points, yielding an aspect-enhanced program. In this paper, we apply some of the concepts from the AOP paradigm to data. Like code, data also has cross-cutting concerns such as versioning, security, privacy, and reliability. We propose modeling a cross-cutting data concern as a schema aspect. A schema aspect describes the structure of the metadata in the cross-cutting concern, identifies the types of data elements that can be wrapped with metadata, i.e., the cut points, and provides some simple constraints on the use of the metadata. Several schema aspects can be applied to a single data collection, though in this paper we focus on just two aspects: a reliability aspect and a temporal aspect. We show how to weave the schema for these two aspects together with the schema for the data into a single, unified schema that we call a schema tapestry. The tapestry guides the construction, interpretation, and validation of an aspect-enhanced data collection. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Integration testing of Object-oriented and aspect-oriented programs: A structural pairwise approach for Java

Several testing approaches focus on finding faults in software units of implementation. A problem not addressed by unit testing is the interaction among units, with respect to the correctness of their interfaces. In this paper a structural integration testing approach for Object-oriented (00) and aspect-oriented (AO) Java programs is presented. To make the activity more feasible, we address the testing of pairs of units (i.e., methods and pieces of advice). A model called PWDU (PairWise Def-Use) graph to represent the flow of control and data between pairs of units is proposed. Based on the PWDU, the following family of testing criteria is defined: all-pairwise-integrated-nodes (control-flow based), all-pairwise-integrated-edges (control-flow based), and all-pairwise-integrated-uses (data-flow based). To evaluate the proposed approach, an implementation of the criteria in a testing tool is presented along with an example of usage and an exploratory study. The study with 7 AO programs that are also 00 was conducted to investigate the cost of application and usefulness of the approach. Results provided evidence that the criteria are practical and useful for integration testing of 00 and AO programs. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Dynamic slicing of distributed aspect-oriented Programs: A context-sensitive approach

This paper presents a dynamic parallel context-sensitive slicing algorithm for distributed AOPs. The context sensitivity makes the computed slice more precise and accurate. We introduce parallelism in our algorithm to make slice computation faster. We have developed a tool called D-aspectJ slider to compute dynaMic slices for distributed AOPs. The proposed slicing technique is compared with two other related existing techniques using ten case studies. The experimentation shows that our proposed slicing algorithm generates smaller slices in less time as compared to other two existing algorithms.

Controlling a complete hardware synthesis toolchain with LARA aspects

The synthesis and mapping of applications to configurable embedded systems is a notoriously complex process. Design-flows typically include tools that have a wide range of parameters which interact in very unpredictable ways, thus creating a large and complex design space. When exploring this space, designers must manage the interfaces between different tools and apply, often manually, a sequence of tool-specific transformations making design exploration extremely cumbersome and error-prone. This paper describes the use of techniques inspired by aspect-oriented technology and scripting languages for defining and exploring hardware compilation strategies. In particular, our approach allows developers to control all stages of a hardware/software compilation and synthesis toolchain: from code transformations and compiler optimizations to placement and routing for tuning the performance of application kernels. Our approach takes advantage of an integrated framework which provides a transparent and unified view over toolchains, their data output and the control of their execution. We illustrate the use of our approach when designing application-specific hardware architectures generated by a toolchain composed of high-level source-code transformation and synthesis tools. The results show the impact of various strategies when targeting custom hardware and expose the complexities in devising these strategies, hence highlighting the productivity benefits of this approach.
