Flexible metaprogramming and AOP in Java

Advanced programming techniques such as metaprogramming and computational reflection, as well as the more recent paradigm of aspect-oriented programming (AOP), serve important objectives of software engineering such as modularization and adaptability. In this tool presentation paper, we briefly overview this area and present Reflex, a portable tool for flexible metaprogramming and AOP in Java. Reflex provides both structural and behavioral facilities adopting a uniform model of partial reflection. This allows selective and fine-grained control of where and when reflection occurs. The facilities of Reflex make it easy to experiment with (combinations oo advanced uses of AOP and reflection without reinventing the wheel or being limited to a specific AOP language. Open aspects are our approach to face unplanned changes in systems that are based on aspect-oriented composition at runtime. They support explicit adaptation models, allowing developers to describe system change events to be observed, and corrective actions to be taken. These events and actions cover both the base system affected by aspects as well as the aspects affecting the base system themselves. The proper combination of change events and corrective actions allows for conditional just-in-time runtime re-composition. This paper offers a detailed discussion of difficulties related to change in aspect-oriented systems and a description of consistency constraints inherent to them. An Extensible Compiler for Implementing Software Design Patterns as Concise Language Constructs

Design patterns are generic solutions to common programming problems. Design patterns represent a typical example of design reuse. However, implementing design patterns can lead to several problems, such as programming overhead and traceability. Existing research introduced several approaches to alleviate the implementation issues of design patterns. Nevertheless, existing approaches pose different implementation restrictions and require programmers to be aware of how design patterns should be implemented. Such approaches make the source code more prone to faults and defects. In addition, existing design pattern implementation approaches limit programmers to apply specific scenarios of design patterns (e.g. class-level), while other approaches require scattering implementation code snippets throughout the program. Such restrictions negatively impact understanding, tracing, or reusing design patterns. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to support the implementation of software design patterns as an extensible Java compiler. Our approach allows developers to use concise, easy-to-use language constructs to apply design patterns in their code. In addition, our approach allows the application of design patterns in different scenarios. We illustrate our approach using three commonly used design patterns, namely Singleton, Observer and Decorator. We show, through illustrative examples, how our design pattern constructs can significantly simplify implementing design patterns in a flexible, reusable and traceable manner. Moreover, our design pattern constructs allow class-level and instance-level implementations of design patterns.

Domain-specific aspect languages for modularising crosscutting concerns in grammars

The emergence of crosscutting concerns can be observed in various representations of software artefacts (e.g. source code, models, requirements and language grammars). Although much of the focus of aspect-oriented programming has been on aspect languages that augment the descriptive power of general-purpose programming languages, there is also a need for domain-specific aspect languages that address particular crosscutting concerns found in software representations other than traditional source code. This study discusses the issues involved in the design and implementation of domain-specific aspect languages that are focused within the domain of language specification. Specifically, the study outlines the challenges and issues faced while designing two separate aspect languages that assist in modularising crosscutting concerns in grammars.

aspectLISA: An aspect-oriented Compiler Construction System Based on Attribute Grammars

The use of object-oriented techniques and concepts, like encapsulation and inheritance, greatly improves language specifications towards better modularity, reusability and extensibility. Additional improvements can be achieved with aspect-oriented techniques since semantic aspects also crosscut many language constructs. Indeed, aspect-oriented constructs have been already added to some language specifications. The LISA compiler construction system follows an object-oriented approach and has already implemented mechanisms for inheritance, modularity and extensibility. Adding aspects to LISA will lead to more reusable language specifications. In the paper, aspect-oriented attribute grammars are introduced, and the underlying ideas are incorporated into aspectLISA, an aspect-oriented compiler generator based on attribute grammars.

Towards a preventive maintenance approach for multi -agent applications

Software preventive maintenance is an important software activity which consists to include modifications and updations in order to prevent future serious issues of the software. In the context of multi-agent systems, such activity is completely omitted. The inherent specificities of multi-agent systems (e.g., autonomy, pro-activity, reactivity, adaptability, etc.) make their maintenance difficult task to achieve. We propose, in this paper, a conditional preventive maintenance approach for multi-agent applications. The proposed approach is based on MAS quality measurements and uses aspect-oriented programming. The proposed approach consists of three major steps, (i) measuring two quality metrics (autonomy and sociability) of the running application in a dynamic and continuous way by using aspectJ code and comparing them with minimum thresholds previously defined by the designer, (ii) warning the maintainer in case of detection of abnormal regression of the MAS quality, and (iii) intervention of the maintainer for preserving the application quality and thus avoid potential damage. The proposed approach is supported by a software tool we developed called PMMAS (Preventive Maintenance of Multi-Agent Systems). The approach and the associated tool are illustrated using a concrete case study.

Many software developers are attracted to the idea of AOP—they recognize the concept of crosscutting concerns and know they have had problems with the implementation of such concerns in the past. But they have questions about how to adopt AOP into their development process, including: How to use aspects in existing code? What kinds of benefits can be expected? How steep is the learning curve for AOP? How to begin? These questions are addressed here in the context of aspectJ-a general-purpose AO extension to Java. A series of abridged examples illustrate the kinds of aspects programmers can implement using aspectJ and the benefits associated with doing so. Optimization Extraction of Crassostrea gigas Polysaccharides and its Antioxidant Activity and Hepatoprotective Against BCG-LPS-Induced Hepatic Injury in Mice

A active oyster polysaccharide (AOP) was extracted from oyster tissues by ultrasonic assisted extraction. The optimal extraction conditions were 20 min at pH 8, 60C with 40 W and water to solid ratio of 10, and with this method 42.732.34 (mg/g) of AOP yield was obtained. Additionally, the antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities of AOP were investigated. The results showed that AOP exhibited strong antioxidant effects, which included scavenging activities against DPPH radicals and hydrogen oxide with IC50 values of 3.08 and 11.18 mg/mL, respectively. For hepatoprotective activities against BCG-LPS-induced hepatic injury in mice, AOP was shown to effectively improved the liver index, spleen index and thymus index, reduced the serum levels of ALT and AST. Treatment with AOP significantly increased hepatic SOD and GSH-Px activity, GSH. The levels of TNF- and IL-1 in BCG/LPS-induced mice liver homogenates were decreased markedly by treatment with AOP. Practical ApplicationsThis work provides an alternative way for aquatic products processing enterprises to evaluate oyster polysaccharide quality and bioactivity. AOP have been shown to have potential for nutritional or pharmaceutical applications. AOP may have hepatoprotective effects against BCG-LPS -induced liver injury, which was related to its antioxidative and immunomodulatory effects.

Object-oriented transformations for extracting aspects

In the migration of object-oriented systems towards the aspect technology, after locating fragments of code presenting a crosscutting behavior and before extracting such code to aspects, transformations may be needed in the base program. Such transformations aim to associate crosscutting code to points of the base program that can be captured using the pointcut descriptor model of aspect-oriented languages. In this paper, we present a catalog of object-oriented transformations and demonstrate the importance of such transformations by reporting on a case study involving four systems that have been aspectized using aspectJ.
