An approach to implementation of aspect-oriented programming for C

This paper describes an approach to implementation of aspect-oriented programming (AOP) frameworks for C, outlines traditional AOP facilities for different programming languages, and shows how specific features of C and a build process of C programs affect AOP implementations. Next, we consider additional requirements imposed by a practical application of AOP implementations for C programs. Existing solutions are described and possibility of their use is analyzed. The paper describes a new AOP tool for C that implements the proposed approach and demonstrates its capabilities.

Empirical taxonomy of refactoring methods for aspect-oriented programming

Refactoring improves software quality by improving the design of existing code through changing its internal structure while preserving its behavior. Improving one quality attribute may impair other quality attributes. A number of refactoring methods were proposed specifically for aspect-oriented systems. However, there are no guidelines to help aspect-oriented software designer decide which refactoring methods to apply to optimize a software system with regard to certain design goals. In this paper, we propose a taxonomy/classification of refactoring methods for aspect-oriented programming based on their measurable effect on software quality attributes using six open-source aspect-oriented software systems. Impact of aspect-oriented programming on software development efficiency and design quality: an empirical study

The aspect-oriented programming (AOP) approach is supposed to enhance a system's features such as modularity, readability and simplicity. Owing to a better modularisation of crosscutting concerns, the developed system implementation would be less complex, and more readable. Thus, software development efficiency would increase, so the system would be created faster than its object-oriented programming (OOP) equivalent. An empirical study of a web-based system development is carried out to examine AOP against OOP approach with regard to software development efficiency and design quality. The study reveals that the AOP approach appears to be a fullfledged alternative to the pure OOP approach. Nevertheless, the impact of AOP on software development efficiency and design quality was not confirmed. In particular, it appeared that design quality metrics were not significantly associated with using AOP, instead of OOP. It is possible that the benefits of AOP will exceed the results obtained in the present study for experiments with larger number of subjects.

aspect-oriented programming is known as a technique for modularizing crosscutting concerns. However, constructs aimed to support crosscutting modularity might actually break class modularity. As a consequence, class developers face changeability, parallel development and comprehensibility problems, because they must be aware of aspects whenever they develop or maintain a class. At the same time, aspects are vulnerable to changes in classes, since there is no contract specifying the points of interaction amongst these elements. These problems can be mitigated by using adequate design rules between classes and aspects. We present a design rule specification language and explore its benefits since the initial phases of the development process, specially with the aim of supporting modular development of classes and aspects. We discuss how our language improves crosscutting modularity without breaking class modularity. We evaluate it using a real case study and compare it with other approaches. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. Facilitating software extension with design patterns and aspect-oriented programming

Software products, especially large applications, need to continuously evolve, in order to adapt to the changing environment and updated requirements. With both the producer and the customer unwilling to replace the existing application with a completely new one, adoption of design constructs and techniques which facilitate the application extension is a major design issue. In the current work we investigate the behavior of an object-oriented software application at a specific extension scenario, following three implementation altematives with regards to a certain design problem relevant to the extension. The first alternative follows a simplistic solution, the second makes use of a design pattern and the third applies aspect-oriented programming techniques to implement the same pattern. An assessment of the three alternatives is attempted, both on a qualitative and a quantitative level, by identifying the additional design implications needed to perform the extension and evaluating the effect of the extension on several quality attributes of the application. A systematic review of comparative evidence of aspect-oriented programming

Context: aspect-oriented programming (AOP) promises to improve many facets of software quality by providing better modularization and separation of concerns, which may have system wide affect. There have been numerous claims in favor and against AOP compared with traditional programming languages such as Objective oriented and Structured programming Languages. However, there has been no attempt to systematically review and report the available evidence in the literature to support the claims made in favor or against AOP compared with non-AOP approaches. Objective: This research aimed to systematically identify, analyze, and report the evidence published in the literature to support the claims made in favor or against AOP compared with non-AOP approaches. Method: We performed a systematic literature review of empirical studies of AOP based development, published in major software engineering journals and conference proceedings. Results: Our search strategy identified 3307 papers, of which 22 were identified as reporting empirical studies comparing AOP with non-AOP approaches. Based on the analysis of the data extracted from those 22 papers, our findings show that for performance, code size, modularity, and evolution related characteristics, a majority of the studies reported positive effects, a few studies reported insignificant effects, and no study reported negative effects;however, for cognition and language mechanism, negative effects were reported. Conclusion: AOP is likely to have positive effect on performance, code size, modularity, and evolution. However its effect on cognition and language mechanism is less likely to be positive. Care should be taken using AOP outside the context in which it has been validated. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Runtime Reusable Weaving Model for Cloud Services Using aspect- oriented programming: The Security-Related aspect

Cloud computing technology has opened an avenue to meet the critical need to securely share distributed resources and web services, and especially those that belong to clients who have sensitive data and applications. However, implementing crosscutting concerns for cloud-based applications is a challenge. This challenge stems from the nature of distributed Web-based technology architecture and infrastructure. One of the key concerns is security logic, which is scattered and tangled across all the cloud service layers. In addition, maintenance and modification of the security aspect is a difficult task. Therefore, cloud services need to be extended by enriching them with features to support adaptation so that these services can become better structured and less complex. aspect-oriented programming is the right technical solution for this problem as it enables the required separation when implementing security features without the need to change the core code of the server or client in the cloud. Therefore, this article proposes a Runtime Reusable Weaving Model for weaving security-related crosscutting concerns through layers of cloud computing architecture. The proposed model does not require access to the source code of a cloud service and this can make it easier for the client to reuse the needed security-related crosscutting concerns. The proposed model is implemented using aspect orientation techniques to integrate cloud security solutions at the software-as-a-service layer.

Cooperative aspect-oriented programming

aspect-oriented programming (AOP) seeks to improve software modularity via the separation of cross-cutting concerns. AOP proponents often advocate a development strategy where programmers write the main application (base code), ignoring crosscutting concerns, and then aspect programmers, domain experts in their specific concerns, weave in the logic for these more specialized cross-cutting concerns. This purely oblivious strategy, however, has empirically been shown to tightly couple aspects to base code in many cases, hindering aspect modularity and reuse. In essence, the more intricate the weaving between the cross-cutting concern and the base code (lexically and/or semantically), the harder it becomes to: (a) robustly specify how to weave the aspects in at the required points, (b) capture interactions between aspects and base code, and (c) preserve the correct weaving as the base code evolves. We propose an alternate methodology, termed cooperative aspect-oriented programming (Co-AOP), where complete lexical separation of concerns is not taken as an absolute requirement. Instead, cross-cutting concerns are explicitly modeled as abstract interfaces through explicit join points (EJPs). Programmers specify where these interfaces interact with base code either through explicit lexical references or via traditional oblivious aspects. This explicit awareness allows base code and aspects to cooperate in ways that were previously not possible: arbitrary blocks of code can be advised, advice can be explicitly parameterized, base code can guide aspects in where to apply advice, and aspects can statically enforce new constraints upon the base code that they advise. These new techniques allow aspect modularity and program safety to increase, and bring us towards a cooperative ACIP paradigm. We illustrate our methodology via an example on transactions, and also give an initial evaluation of cooperative AOP through an empirical study on program extensibility comparing both the

Developing control logic using aspect-oriented programming and sequence planning

A fundamental functionality of a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is to control and execute a set of operations. But a large part of the program code is more involved in supporting the user with concerns like alarm, HMI, communication, safety and manual control. Code related to these supporting concerns is often tangled with operation execution code, the core concerns, which makes it hard to reuse. This paper describes a method to reuse code and functionality when developing PLC programs and code libraries. The method proposes that core concerns are planned with a software tool called Sequence Planner, and the supporting concerns are integrated into the core concerns with a tool based on aspect-oriented programming. Flexible and efficient profiling with aspect-oriented programming

Many profilers for virtual execution environments, such as the Java virtual machine (JVM), are implemented with low-level bytecode instrumentation techniques, which is tedious, error-prone, and complicates maintenance and extension of the tools. In order to reduce the development time and cost, we promote building profilers for the JVM using high-level aspect-oriented programming (AOP). We show that the use of aspects yields concise profilers that are easy to develop, extend, and maintain, because low-level instrumentation details are hidden from the tool developer. In order to build efficient profilers, we introduce inter-advice communication, an extension to common AOP languages that enables efficient data passing between advices that are woven into the same method using local variables. We illustrate our approach with two case studies. First, we show that an existing, instrumentation-based tool for listener latency profiling can be easily recast as an aspect. Second, we present an aspect for comprehensive calling context profiling. In order to reduce profiling overhead, our aspect parallelizes application execution and profile creation, resulting in a speedup of 110% on a machine with more than two cores, compared with a primitive, non-parallel approach.
